Sinceweusedifferentmethodsinnamingbinarycovalent(molecular)compoundsandioniccompounds,thefirststepinnamingorwritingtheformulaofacompoundistodeterminewhichofthe2compoundclassesitbelongs.Thiscanbedoneasfollows:

Binary covalent compoundswill containonly two types of non-metal elements.Theremaybemorethanoneofeachelement.ForexampleCO2containsjusttwotypes of elements, carbon and oxygen. We will discuss naming covalentcompoundsthatcontainmorethantwotypesofelements, likeglucoseC6H12O6,inlaterchapters.

Onceitisdeterminedthatthecompoundisionicorcovalent,thestudentcanbeaskedtodoeitherofthefollowing:1)Giventhenameofthecompound,writetheformula.
