The Life Behind a Ship

• Putting together a whaling voyage was both a national and an international undertaking

• It is important to understand the value of interstate commerce when understanding America and its economy: particularly the whaling industry.

• Click on a ship part to find out more about the piece

Harpoon

Where does the Iron come from?

• The iron comes from the bogs of the marshlands around Boston.

The Harpoon

• The Harpoon was the main tool used in killing the whale during a voyage. Once harpooned the whale would be followed until it died and then returned to the whale ship to be processed.

• However, what role do Panama, Kentucky, and Boston play in making the Harpoon?

InterState Relationships

• Iron from Boston– Iron bars were smelted in furnaces in Quincy,

Massachusetts or Saugus, Massachusetts– But that Iron was smelted from COKE from Kentucky– The wood for the fires in the smith shop was from

Connecticut, Massachusetts or New Hampshire– The smith shop was often in found places like New

Bedford, MA where the Iron bars were sent to be made into specific ship parts

• Finally it was shipped to the port where the ship was being launched

Where does the

Rope come from?

The hemp comes from Central America to New England.

QuickTime™ and a decompressor

are needed to see this picture.

Rope Making

• Hemp is a biomass/plant with fibrous aspects that make it easy to create individual strands– These strands are woven over and over again to

form rope with great strength

• When hemp was phased out, manila (a relative of the banana) from the Philippines was used – These strands were stronger, needed

less water-proofing, and just as strong

International Relationships

• The hemp for rope was from Panama and Central America

• The manila later used for rope was from the Philippines

• Many sailors were not just from local towns near the ship’s port, but also immigrants looking for a way to “make it” in the USA

The Making of a Whaling Voyage was a national

undertaking.

• The whaling voyage was a major undertaking not just for the town where the ship took port, but from other parts of the country and the world as well.

• The life behind a ship was more involved than one can imagine.
