Help!

Help!

My name is Bhuti and I have to go to the doctor.

My mom says so!

Help!

“Is it a well-check,” I ask? “Or is it something more?”

“More,” says my mom.

“Oh no,” I say.1

I noticed there was somethingdifferent about my stomach. I havea little bump, hiding in my fur, where my stomach should be flat.

“It’s about your little bump,” mymom says.

“Hmmm...” I’m not so sure!

“Gosh Bhuti, says mycapuchin friend Heidi. “Youshould go to the doctor ifyour mom says. It’s foryour own good”.

Right away I think ofmy favorite stuffy!“Bear” is soft to hugand just the right sizeto carry along. “If Igo to the doctor’s,” I tellmy mom, “Bear just hasto come with!”

But I’m still not sure Iwant to go.

Bear just has tocome with!

Help!

Then my mom tellsme what it’s about.Gosh Bhuti, it’s

for your owngood!!

2

But then my doctor tells me....it will fix the problem.

Not all hernias are a health problem. But mine is.

Ugh--who wants to get stitches anyway? Not me.

My doctor figures it out right away. “It’s a hernia!”I was born with it she says.My doctor says I need some stitches to make my stomach rightagain. “Just a few,” she says.

A hernia?An operation?

“Can I wear a brace or a sling?”

“Can I take pink medicine instead?” I ask. “Or a pill or even ashot?”

3

And it’s veryspecial thatdoctors knowhow to fix suchthings.

“No,” the doctorsays. “Somethings can only befixed withstitches”

“How about if I eatextra fruit andveggies for a week?”

“Or can we do amagic trick instead?”

4

But then I wonder, “Can I still horse around after I get stitches”

Maybe I’ll be adoctor someday!

Maybe I’ll be a doctor someday!

“You will live a longer healthier life,” my doctor says.

That part sounds great!

5

“Of course,” says my doc-tor. “All in good time...”

“Can I do a gazillion flip-flops in the house?”

“Can I still play in my jungleoutside?”

6

Be a goodgiraffe...

Then she showsme a giraffe posterthat says “Be agood giraffe andeat your veggies!”

Before we leavethe doctor’s, I get

I’m thinking about it...Then I tell my doctor, “But Bear just has tocome with, okay?”

Help! Can my little pinkBear come with?

“Of course,” mydoctor tells me.

a date for the Big Day. My mom says, I’m going to the hospitalfor my Big Day.

But do I reallyhave to go?

11

Skip breakfast?Hmmm...

Then my doctorcalls to give meinstructions for theBig Day: No food orwater after midnightthe night before.

But Bear doesn’t want torun away. And Beardoesn’t care if we miss ameal.

Then my mom promisesme I’ll get a new toy whenI come home!

Maybe I’ll run away fromhome instead...

“When I get home, I’ll needa new toy and a goodtreat,” I say.

12

And a silly song...

”Do my ears hang low, dothey wobble to and fro. Can Itie them in a knot? Can I tiethem in a bow? Can I throwthem over my shoulder like acontinental soldier. Do myears hang low, low, low.

I need three bedtime stories before I can fall asleep.

That night when I go to bed, my eyes keep popping open.

,

.

“Does my nose hang low? Can it wobble to and fro? Can I tie it in aknot? Can I tie it in a bow? Can I throw it over my shoulder...”

“You really do have to go to sleep now,” says my mom. “Tomorrow isthe Big Day.”

13

So I sing, as my momdrives along. And as Ising I think of sillythings like...playingwith my stuff...

My mouth turns downand so do my eyes. “Iam not happy,” I tellmy mom.

“Let’s try to sing asong then,” she says.“And think of happythings.”

Stay with meBear!

But by now we are in the car. Already, we are almost there.

“Bear doesn’t wantto go either,” I say.

And I am too hungryto skip a meal.

But the next morn-ing I change mymind.

I won’t go! Ichanged my mind!

14

...Then we sing silly songs like...“John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

...and things of all kinds...I think about......games of hide-and-seek......with my friends......and of happy things like hugs...

...and playing with toys...

That name is my name too.Whenever we go out, hearthe happy people shout, JohnJacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.Tra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra....!”Round two: “Bhuti MonkeyJingleheimer Schmidt...”

We go through the names ofeveryone I know...

Before I know it, we’re there.

15

Then we go inside and thenurse takes my temperature...

... and then my weight (threeand a quarter pounds)...

Still I’m very glad that Bearcame with.

Do they always feel so cold?

I have a good heartbeat, shesays.

Then she holds a stethoscopeto my chest...

16

Then my momhelps me thinkof another sillysong--the namegame...and Ising it to myselfover and over.

“Bhuti, Bhuti,Fo-Fhuti, Ba-nana Fana Fo

I have to get a needle poke!“Just one,” she says...

“Give it to Bear,” I say.

I think I’m leaving. “Ouch!”

Ouch!

Smile!You havea nicedoctor!

My doctor comes in and showsme a poster of a meercat. Itsays, “Smile! You have a nicedoctor!”

But then she breaks the news.

Fhuti--Fee Fi Mo Mhuti--Bhuuu-ti!” Then: “Heidi, Heidi, Fo Feidi,Banana Fana Fo Feidi, Fee Fi Mo Meidi. Heiii-di!” I just keep sing-ing.... 17

I dream aboutplaying with mytoys.

I dream aboutHeidi in herfunny fruit hat...

The doctor says,“Look at the hairynosed wombatposter and ‘Rest,relax!’...”

.. I can barely holdmy eyes open. Mydoctor tells me I willbe asleep and Bearwill stay awake.

Then it’s anesthetic time. I take a medicine that makes me sleepy. And then I’m feeling so sleepy.

Rest,relax!

Then I sleepand I havesome dreams.

18

I have happy dreams and Idon’t feel a thing.

Bear could tell me about myoperation later, but only if Iwant to know.

Maybe in a year.

I dream some more andbefore I know it...

19

Instead of a bump, now I have stitches.

It was a very good trade!

Then I touch my stomach. The hernia is gone.

I wake up and think,

“Where am I anyway?”

Where am Ianyway?

20

Back at my house, I get avisitor. “Hurry up and get wellsoon,” says Heidi. “And don’tforget to rest,” she says.

“The hard part is over,”says the nurse. Sheasks me how I feel.

My stitches are done. “Hooray!”

“Okay now,” I say, “butwhat if my stitches startto hurt when I gethome?”

“If anything hurts, you’llget some special medi-cine,” she says. “Thenyou’ll feel fine.”

Next my doctor tells me that I’m ready to go home.

“But make sure to rest,” she says.

Help!And don’tforget to rest!

21

“Hmmm...” Well, okay. I’ll rest ifBear will rest...

“Rest?” I say.“What aboutplaying with toysand tearing up thehouse?”

22

Then Heidi sits with me and Bear.

“And gosh Bhuti,” she says, “before you know it you will have yourstitches out.”

“Before you know it you’ll be back to normal. You’ll be getting intoeverything.”

Gosh, before youknow it, you will

have your stitchesout!

“But will my stomach ever look right again?

“Will I ever feel better than I do today?”

“Yes!” says my mom.

Will my stomachever look right

again?

23

But the next dayI’m up and showingoff my stitches. Allfour of them! Mydoctor used purplethread!

“More rest,” thedoctor says.

The next morning Ihardly feel likegetting out of bed.

Then Heidi and I take anap. Bear too...

I get a muffin and then Isnuggle with Heidi andBear.

We play puzzles andgames.

24

Heidi and I look in the basementfor a stack of books.

Where are mypicture books?

I’m taking good care ofmyself...

And pretty soon,I’m up andaround and play-ing with my oldfavorite toys.

I’m getting agazillion cards inthe mail that say,“Get well soon!”

Each day I’m healing a littlemore and looking for thingsto do.

My doctor sends me afunny warthog cardthat says “Hope you’reup and around!”

25

...and play with things and playwith toys.

And just like Heidi said, I’mgetting into things.

I roll around and play with pa-per...

Then I give awagon ride toBear.

“No monkeyingaround,” saysMom.

But I just have tomonkey around!

26

So I go to my doctor for a check.

And she takes my stitches out! It’s done so fast and doesn’t hurtat all.

“Does this mean I can play out-side again?” I ask.

“Yes!” my doctor says.

Then I get my new toy!”

It’s a special toy with lots ofcolors and shapes.

I move all the parts and play withit for a long time.

But then I’m thinking, “Whenwill I get to play outsideagain?”

It seems like I’ve played inthe house a gazillion daysnow, so I’m really getting tiredof it.

27

And Bear comes with! If Ican go outside, Bear cango out too. My mom saysso!

“Let’s climb!” I tell Heidi. Ilove climbing in the flow-ers.

...We explore high andlow and climb in thebranches of my rubbertree.

”I’m happy that you gotwell soon,” says Heidi.

“And that we can playoutside a gazilliontimes,” I say.

And guess what?28

Except for onething.

When I’m all healed, everything is back tonormal.

29

I feel even better than I did before!!
