why the name “hand + foot”?
hand + foot • 69 west market street, corning, ny • 607 973 2547 • www.handandfoot.co 26
Hand and Foot is a card game played through three generations of our family. It is a complex undertaking
involving teams of two, and scores in the tens of thousands. The game is played around the kitchen table on a cold
winter night or over the course of a summer.
Although bragging rights are certainly important, the even bigger prize is the community it creates. The rhythm of
shuffling and dealing, of fetching drinks and popping corn, and the whiling away of time, forgetting petty
differences and strengthening bonds, is an invaluable and beloved part of this small family’s tradition.
Play a few hands yourself and you will be a believer, hooked on the stuff that transforms a loving family into a
trusted tribe.
How to Play the Game
Each player is dealt two sets of cards using one as the “hand” and one as the “foot. “ The way we play is with either four or six
players in partnerships (two or three teams of two). Partners sit across from each other. If you are playing with six then you sit
with two other people between you and your partner.
Decks
You’ll need a deck of cards, including the jokers, for each player. Four players = four decks. Six players = six decks.
Dealing
Shuffle and shuffle some more. Everyone shuffles and cuts the decks with each other’s piles, then shuffles again—repeating at
least three times.
Choose which person deals first. That person deals two sets of cards face down to each player, 11 cards in each set. Once the
sets are dealt, each player takes the stack of cards on the right and passes it to the player on his right, and the stack on the left
and passes it to the player on his left. Each player then decides which stack to pick up first to make his hand. The other
becomes his foot and is set aside.
Subsequent deals rotate to the left.
Object of the Game
The aim is to get rid of cards from your hand (11 cards), and then from your foot (11 cards), by putting them into books. A book
is a set of three to seven cards of equal rank placed face up on the table. A book cannot have fewer than three cards. Books
belong to a partnership and not an individual player.
After a book has been started, each partner can play further cards on the book until there are seven cards total—it then
becomes a “closed book.” A book cannot contain more than seven cards at the time that it is closed. If you complete a book,
you can start another book of the same rank, or on subsequent turns, you can keep adding cards to your closed book
hand + foot • 69 west market street, corning, ny • 607 973 2547 • www.handandfoot.co 27
You can book cards of any rank from A, K, Q…down to 4. Deuces (2s) and Jokers are wild cards and can be used to make
books of any rank, as long as there is at least one more real card of the rank of the book as there are wild cards (i.e., one wild
and two real, or two wilds and three reals, or three wilds and four reals). Red and black threes cannot be used in books—they
can only be used as discards. A book can contain a total of three wild cards at most. You cannot make a book of wild cards
alone.
A book of seven cards is complete and is called a closed book. There are two types of books:
1. A Clean (Natural) Book has no wild cards and a red card on top is used to indicate that fact. 2. A Dirty (Wild) Book has wild cards and a black card on top is used to indicate that fact.
While books are laid out face up for everyone to see, completed piles are stacked up and the card placed on top shows the
type—a red card for a Clean Book, a black card for a Dirty Book. Cards of equal rank can be added to closed books; wild cards
cannot be added to them.
The Play
The remainder of the cards are placed in a stack face down in the middle of the table to form a “draw pile.” The players’ “foot”
cards are placed faced down and set aside—players are not allowed to look at them until they have played all the cards in their
hands. Each player picks up their “hand” and play begins with the player on the left of the one who dealt the round. Turn to play
passes clockwise around the table until someone goes out. At each turn, a player:
1. Draws the top two cards off the draw pile** 2. Has the option of adding cards to books, assuming round minimum can be met 3. Discards one card on the discard pile face up (next to the draw pile) to end their turn
**Instead of drawing two cards off the draw pile, you may take the topmost card from the discard pile, IF:
• You hold at least two cards which are the same rank as the top card • You can immediately play these three cards (the two you are holding and the top discard), along with any other cards
you wish to play
You will discard as usual if you use the ** method.
To “Lay Down”
A game consists of rounds. At the start of each round, a minimum point value is determined for each partnership to begin laying
down books. You must put down cards whose individual face values add up to at least the minimum requirement before your
team is “in the game.” You can put down several books at once to achieve this.
The amount needed to lay down books is determined by each partnership’s cumulative score. This provides a handicap to the
lower-scoring partnership and keeps the game more competitive (and fun).

If a partnership has a
cumulative score of:
They need this many points in their
hand to start putting down books:

1501 – 2500 90
2501 – 5000 120
5001 – 7500 150

Picking Up Your Foot
When you have been able to play all the cards in your hand, by either booking or discarding them, you then pick up your foot
and play from that. If you are able to get rid of all your cards in your hand without discarding, you can continue to play into your
foot during that hand (this is heavenly!). If you have to discard the last card to get into your foot, you must hold off playing your
foot cards until your turn comes around the table.
Red and Black Threes
Red and black threes are “bad” cards and are used against you. Red threes are the worst, so if you find you are holding a red
three, you should discard it as soon as possible. If you are caught with a red three in your hand or foot at the end of a round,
your team will be charged minus 300 points per red three against your total score. Likewise, if you have any black threes left in
your hand or foot at the end of a round, it counts 5 points against your team’s total score. There is no way to get rid of threes,
except for discarding them, one by one, into the discard pile.
End of Play
The play ends when one of the partners “goes out.” In order to go out, your partnership must have closed at least two Red
Books and two Black Books, and the player who is ready to go out must have a discard to end with. That player also must ask
his partner for permission to go out (the partner could say no if he has red threes or too many points in his hand to forfeit since
whatever he is holding will be subtracted from your total score). Obviously, you would never ask permission to go out if your
partner was not yet playing from his foot.
Scoring
You receive two scores per round. You score points for the combined face value of all cards you have booked AND for each
closed book. For every card you have left in your hand and foot when the one player goes out (even if that player is your
partner), you subtract from your total the combined face value of all those cards.
