Better Solutions with BFWNikhil Nagaraj, BFW, Bangalore
BFW Update, Newsletter from Bharat Fritz Werner LtdOctober – December 2014, Vol. 15, No. 4Price `1/-
- Clean and green process, low energy consumption, no need for high pressure coolant filtration system- Better heat dissipation from the component as the heat is carried away by the chips- Cutting parameters nearly eight times those of con-ventional drilling process, exponentially enhanced productivity - Generation of small, easy to handle chips- Tool life nearly three times than that applicable to gun drilling Obviously, the BFW solution is more flexible, more pro-ductive, and cleaner. Need a solution? Write to us. We will be happy to help you.
IT IS OFTeN SaID ThaT the crankshaft is the heart of the engine. Literally almost everything moves around the crankshaft in the engine. BFW is currently execut-ing an order for horizontal machining centers and spe-cial purpose machines for machining crankshafts – this being the third repeat order from a Fortune 500 Jap-anese car maker admired worldwide for innovation and quality. among the various machines on order are hMCs used for drilling oil holes in the crankshaft. Pressurised oil through these holes lubricates the main bearings of the connecting rod. If the oil holes are not properly machined, the performance of the crankshaft suffers. hence, the operation is not as simple as it sounds. Compared to the traditional way of oil hole drilling through gun drilling process, the solution offered by BFW carries the following advantages:
- Standard machine with a 2-axis rotary-tiltingtable for unmatched flexibility to access oil holes indifferent planes and orientations, accommodating sev-eral crankshaft models with least change-over times- Near-dry machining with just-enough oil mist cool-ing the cutting edge much better than high pressurecoolant (emulsion or neat cutting oil)

aS PeR a ReCeNT FICCI estimate, India’s GDP is ex-pected to grow at 5.6 per cent during 2014-15. The industrial sector is expected to grow by 4.7 per cent in 2014-15 fiscal. The economic activity is expected to continue with the current momentum till March 2015 as per the estimate. Rating agency Moody, too, pre-dicting on somewhat similar lines, observes reduction in downside risks to the economy and brightening of prospects, expecting the growth rate to accelerate to 5.2 per cent in 2014 and 6.5 per cent by the end of 2015. While the numbers are modest, the scenario is definitely positive.
at the macro-level, 2013-14 was a year of many initiatives for BFW. Some, such as reduction in waste-ful expenditure and increase in productivity, have al-ready started yielding results. Many more, such as greater thrust on research and development, assimila-tion of latest world-class technology, increased quality consciousness, and process improvement have started leaving their impact from this year.
The BFW arm in Germany, matec Maschinenbau Gmbh, is constantly working to meet more and more of your expectations. We are adding to the length and breadth of the product basket in India as well, to become a one-stop shop for you.
It is pleasing to be showered with your continued trust, leading us to design, build and supply large machining lines to some of the greatest companies in the world from the last month. They have noticed and appreci-ated the marked improvements on the products.
My Best Wishes on Id-ul-Zuha, Deepawali, Gurparab and Christmas!

Improved Cost-effectiveness in Tool and Mould Making
Shanthakumar M, Siemens, Bangalore
The SIeMeNS SINUMeRIK RaNGe OF CNC is now available with greater NC functionality and user-friendliness. Function extensions in the SINUMeRIK MDynamics technology package, optimisation of the SINUMeRIK Operate user inter-face, and higher CPU computing capacity are some notable improvements, facilitating excellent surface quality.
With CNC function extensions, Siemens harmonises not only the velocity profiles but also the acceleration and jerk profiles of adjacent milling paths with the new MDynamics technology package. This improves surface quality and contributes further towards bet-ter utilisation of the machine dynamics, consequently increasing the average feed rate and reducing cut-ting time by up to 10 percent. Free-form surfaces and other complex structures are thus produced more eco-nomically.
SINUMERIK offers 80-bit NanoFP as standard across the SINUMeRIK family of CNCs. SINUMeRIK CNCs and SINAMICS drives calculate with a powerful 80 bit floating point accuracy. This guarantees world-class precision with internal accuracy more precise than na-nometer in the complete control loop.
The SINUMeRIK Operate is another customer-friendly offering with key features as below:
Different options for defining raw parts
Lateral machining on milling machines
availability of manual machine function

eNGINeeRS DON’T haVe a KNaCK of counting their money. Why should they have it? Drawing sheets do not have provision for noting profits and losses. And that brings us to the question asked in the previous issue – what would be the loss in the transaction if a fake note of `100 forms a part of it? The answer is, `100!

My son met me yesterday with a fishy smile. he showed me three sealed boxes. I polished my glasses and looked closely. The first box was labelled S, the second had C written over it, and the third one was marked CS. “These boxes carry 50 spheres and 50 cubes. One box has only cubes and no spheres. another box has only spheres and no cubes. The third box has both cubes and spheres. Can you tell which box has only the spheres by opening just one box?”
“Of course, the one marked ‘S’, isn’t S the first letter of the word sphere?”
“Papa, the world is not what it pretends to be. all boxes are labelled incorrectly!”
he has given me some time to revert with the answer. Can you suggest which box should I open? Please send your response to amitabh@bfw.co.in.

BFW CNC VeRTICaL LaTheS SeRVe the dual function of removing heavy material through roughing, and bring-ing high accuracy through finishing. Direct loading and 50 cc/min/kW material removal rate facilitate the desired shape being reached without any loss of time.
These machines impart good surface finish and high ac-curacy even on parts bulkier than 500 kg and 800 mm in diameter, whether it is the tolerance, the taper, the ovality, the perpendicularity, or the concentricity. BVL 1200RL ram type VTL is one of such machines. When Schmidtke and Sohn, owners of a BVL 1200RL in Germany for three years, shared the machine performance, BFW was concerned.
The BFW team, accompanied by technicians from BFW’s local associate George Noll, rushed to the in-stallation in august 2014. The machine was thoroughly inspected. There was no accident, neither was there any manufacturing defect. Preventive maintenance and realignment was all that was required to make the machine perform as good as new, leaving Mr axle Schmidtke happy and impressed.
The learning is simple. You can continue to obtain sus-tained results from these machines through regular maintenance and upkeep. The activity includes check-ing, cleaning, correcting/ replacing parts, aligning, and conducting final inspection at different stages. Should you require any assistance, please contact your nearest BFW office. We will be happy to help you.
