Best New YA Literature

with Dr. Teri S. Lesesne

TO THE WOMAN, WE THINK YOU’RE A TEACHER WITH SOME

BOOKS ON THE TWO TRAINBY SOME ANONYMOUS STUDENTS

On the platform for the 2 trainyou stand with a book in your handthe pages openWhich is how you enter the trainReading Sometimes you smile, or frownOnce you even criedon the trainwhen you were reading Nightand a man sitting across the aislesaid he cried too, when he read that bookand we thought,we want to read that bookso we did 3

And then you were reading all those basketball books by Walter Dean Myersso we read those toospeeding along on the 2 trainone time you saw us reading Slamand you saidI love that bookand do you think Slam is going to make it in highschool? We do, we think he’s going to make it

4

Then you were reading some really hard stuffEpistemology of the Closet, Postmodern NarrativeTheory

and we tried those, but we think you have to have readthe books those authors have read, if you want to readtheir books Our favorite is when you are reading poetryPicnic, Lightningand you lean back against the seatand smileand keep reading the same page again and againwe do that now and it’s really nice

5

Last week you were reading The Life of Piand we rushed out to buy it

So we could be in the lifeboat adrift in the blue, blue seawith the boy, the Bengal Tiger, and you If we don’t see you next yearon the trainMaybe sometime we’ll bump into each other on the platform You’ll know us becausewe’ll have books in our hands

Accidental Matches

• My own: doctor’s office with CITY OF LIGHT, CITY OF DARK

• Share yours with someone near you

However, we want to make these matches purposefully

So, today we are going to talk about how to match readers to books in a purposeful, planned, and (we hope) successful way

People are so desperate to raise test scores that we could well end up with a nation of kids who can pass tests but can neither read critically nor enjoy the act of reading itself.

P. David PearsonNEA Today, 2004

So how are we doing?

• 68% of 8th graders are below proficient level on NAEP

• Fewer than 6% are identified as advanced readers on NAEP

• Compare that to the scores on state exams and we have a disconnect…

So what will we do today?

• a) talk about the latest and best new books for tweens and teens;

• b) offer suggestions for motivating tweens and teens to read; and

• c) explore some post reading activities for assessment.
