Progress of a country is often measured by its
technological innovation in the various engineering
sectors. Materials and metallurgical engineering
has a tremendous role to play in this advancement.
In order to fulfill this dream, three leading institutions
in the country, namely, The Indian Institute of Metals
(IIM), Jamshedpur chapter, Tata Steel Limited and
CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML)
have been working together to nurture the young
metallurgists and inspire them to flourish into
dedicated professionals. "Behind The Teacher's
Desk" (BTTD) is the annual Students' Seminar, for
the promising and aspiring metallurgists, which not
only provides a perfect platform to showcase their
work but also gives plenty of opportunities for
interaction with the experts from industry/
academia/R&D.
The seminar 'Behind the Teacher's Desk (BTTD)',
held at the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory
for the past four years, has been a great success. The
participation of undergraduate and postgraduate
students from across the country has been very
large and is increasing over the years. The seminar
provides a podium to the students to share their ideas
and interact with scientists, eminent metallurgists,
engineers and entrepreneurs in the field of metallurgy.
The seminar provides an opportunity to the students to
present technical papers and gain exposure to
research and industrial areas.
Undergraduate and postgraduate students
Scientists, faculty members, technology
entrepreneurs, engineers or other professionals
associated with metallurgical engineering.

5. Materials modeling and simulation of
metallurgical processes
6. Resource, energy, environment and recycling
7. Innovations in iron and steel
Innovations in the areas such as alternative to mould
powder in continuous casting of steel, development
of inorganic passivation to avoid rusting,
replacement of building materials by slag, use of
slime and non-coking coal for value added products
etc. are seen to be of promise for the economy of
steel industries and beneficial to the environment.
