INTRODUCTION Basirhat college, an institution with distinction, started its journey radiating the light of higher
education on 16th November 1947. The institution stands on the bank of Ichhamoti, which
flows by its ancient seat of learning and culture that witnessed the many souls of the soil, rise to
eminence.
In 1947, the institution was primarily housed at the Basirhat Town Hall and later on it was
shifted to Late Khan Bahadur A.F.M Abdur Rahaman’s residence at the heart of Basirhat Town.
Later, Dr.Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, an eminent educationist and national leader of our country
laid the foundation stone at the present location of the college.
The institution is now functioning in three shifts – morning, day and evening. It accommodates a
huge number of students both boys and girls, coming from villages and towns like Taki,
Hingalgunge, Jogeshgunj, Samsernagar, Katihat, Deganga, Haroa, Baduria, Berachampa etc. to
obtain their bachelor degree in Arts, Science and Commerce.
In the Day section students may take any one of the following honours subjects:
1.Bengali 2. English 3. History 4. Philosophy 5. Political Science 6. Geography 7.
Economics 8. Physics 9. Chemistry 10. Mathematics 11. Botany 12. Physiology 13.
Zoology14. Education 15. Sanskrit and as many as subsidiary subjects along with
Sanskrit.
In the Morning section, mainly General Courses are taught including Education and Geography.
In addition, Bengali Hons. course has been introduced from the session 2008-09.
The Evening Section is solely meant for the Commerce Faculty where honours in Accounting &
Finance and General course subjects are taught. Post graduate Course in Bengali has been
introduced from the Session 2012-13 on self-financing basis.
The college has a well-equipped Library and a number of Laboratories. Qualified and
experienced teacher in all departments guide the students.
The N.S.S. of the college is responsive to community needs and conducts Social extension
activities and Awareness programme since 1978.
Apart from this, the Institution has a N.C.C. wing where only male-students got primary training
in discipline and defence awareness that helped them to join the armed forces after leaving the
college till 2008-09. But from the session 2009-10, a contingent of 55 female students also avail
the scope of the NCC training.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES AND MISSION OFTHE COLLEGE The institution aims at an all-around development of the students in academic along with other
spheres of education and the main goal of the institution is to provide collegiate education in
general and honours stream, viz. B.A., B.Sc. & B.Com. and MA. in Bengali.

as an instrument for the betterment of the society. Our objective is to promote equality and
social justice and also to create the right kind of work ethos, professional expertise and
leadership in all walks of life.

CURRENT ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
Affiliation
The college was formerly affiliated to the University of Calcutta at the Degree Course level and
from the session 2008-09 the college has been affiliated to the West Bengal State University,
Barasat, North 24 Parganas.
Session
The academic session starts from the month of July, every year. First year Arts, Science and
Commerce classes are generally started after the completion of admission procedure of first year
classes and normally within 30 days from the date of publication of the results of Higher
Secondary Examination.
Second year and third year classes commence within 7 days from the date of completion of Part-
l and Part-ll examination respectively. Arrangement for provisional enrolment is done
accordingly.

CBCS System
From the session 2018-2019, with the newly introduced CBCS method, students have to appear
in 6 semesters in three years.
Semester 1 is from July to December and Semester 2 is from January to June.
Tentative date for mid-term test or internal assignment for Semester 1 is the end of September.
Theory or written exam will be held in the month of December at the end of 6 months.
Tentative date for mid-term test or internal assignment for Semester 2 is the end of March.
Theory or written exam will be held in the month of June at the end of 12 months.
This pattern will continue for the next 4 semesters in the second and third years respectively for
students taking admission in 2019-20.
(1+1+1) System
Students under the 1+1+1 examination system are required to appear at THREE University
Examination, viz. Part-l, Part-II and Part-III.
Part-l examination is generally held in the month of June at the end of the first-year study.
Students under the 1+1+1 examination system will have to sit for Part- II and Part-III
University exams according to the old system.
Part-ll examination is to be held in the month of May, at the end of second year of study and the
Part-Ill examination is to be held in April, at the end of third year of study.
The tentative period of submission of University Examination forms & fees to the college office
will be notified.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE
Students who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination from the West Bengal Council of
Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent may take admission to the First-year classes in
any programme of the Three-Year Degree Courses of the college.
For getting admission to the Honours courses a student on satisfying the minimum academic
criteria set by the West Bengal State University (Barasat, North 24 Parganas) has to apply in the
prescribed form available online in the College Website (basirhatcollege.org).A candidate can
apply for maximum of three subjects.
A stipulated amount of application fees (100.00 / 120.00/130.00 for one, two or three subjects)
has to be deposited in a particular bank account through the printed challan available with the
print out of properly filled in application form.
Admission in Hons. Courses in made strictly on the basis of the merit and as per the intake
capacity on each subject. The names of the candidates selected for admission will be published in
the college website. No communication regarding admission will be made to the candidate
individually.
CODE OF CONDUCT FOR THE STUDENTS
Students must be well mannered and polite in their behaviour. They are to be
regular and punctual in their attendance to the college. Loitering in the corridor is
strictly prohibited. Students must observe silence in the classroom, library,
examination hall and corridor. Any breach of discipline, causing disturbance in the
college premises, examination halls will be severely dealt with. Students must keep
the college clean.

Fee Structure
OTHER FEES:
1. Migration fees: ₹ 100.00 (for students migrating from other University/Board)
2. Change of subject: A fee of ₹ 40.00 will be charged for change of a subject.
3. In case of loss of Fee book, Library Card or College Identity Card a fresh copy will be
supplied on payment of ₹ 50.00 for Gen. &₹ 100.00 for Honours.
4. Loss of Library book by a student will make him / her liable either to restore a new copy or
pay the present price of the book.
5. Transfer Certificate fee: Transfer certificate fee is equivalent to one month’s tuition fee.

EXAMINATIONS
Tentative period of College Examination & University Examination
In CBCS System University Examination will be held towards the end of every Semester. Before
that internal assessment will be conducted in the college.
IDENTITY CARD
After taking his/her admission in the college a student gets an identity card, signed by the
Principal Vice-principal. This identity card is a proof of his/her status as a student of Basirhat
college.
NO STUDENT IS ALLOWEDTO ENTER THE COLLEGE CAMPUS WITHOUT
VALID IDENTITY CARD.
ATTENDANCE
According to the rules of West Bengal State University (Barasat, North 24 Parganas)a student
must have to attend at least 75% of the total classes held in each subject.
FACILITIES
Library
The college library has a collection of about twenty-five thousand books. Every student is
provided with a Reading Card and Lending Card (2 books for Hons. students) for issuing books

on loan. It can, however, be renewed at the next session. The students have to deposit Library
Caution deposit @ ₹ 100.00 for Hons. And₹ 50.00 for General Course of study.
Departmental Library
In addition to the general Library, every department of the college has a departmental library.
The department concerned maintains the functioning of the departmental library.
Hostel
The college also maintains a Hostel Named Khan Bahadur Hostel for Boys at Jamrultala, located
2 Kilometres away from the main college campus.
Total number of seats:26 (Twenty-Six)
For getting admission to the hostel of the college a student has to apply in a prescribed form to
be obtained from the Hostel super.

A UGC granted women’s Hostel is under construction at the College Premises.
Student’s Health Home
The college is associated with the branch of Students’ Health Home, located at Basirhat Town
School. Every student of the college is a member of this branch and can avail of the
opportunities rendered by the SHH. The Central SHH, Kolkata, affiliates this branch.

In order to help the academically weaker students some special classes are arranged with the help
of the full-time teachers, part-time teachers and advanced students on the respective subjects.

Seminars and quiz Sessions are arranged regularly on different subjects. Students’ participation in
these programmes is compulsory.
Prizes and Certificates
Prizes are awarded on the basis of performance in the University Examination. Total number of
prizes is six. (Three for the honours course students and three for the general course students of
each stream.) (Sponsored by the Teachers’ Council of the College.)
College Magazine
College Magazine UNMESH is published annually by the Students’ Union. This is a forum
mainly of the students to express their literary talent and capacity for innovative thinking,
although teachers and non-teaching staff of the college also have their contribution to this
publication. It is edited by the Magazine Secretary of the Students’ Union under the supervision
of a teacher.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Games & Sports
Our college participates regularly in the University Inter-College Football, Cricket and athletic
competition. Annual sports meet is organized every year during the month of December and
January by the students’ Union with the help and co-ordination of the teachers and non-teaching
staff of the college. Competition on indoor games is also conducted.

A Gymnasium with modern facilities is available in college campus.

N.C.C.
About 160 students approximately are being trained regularly under 48 Bengal Battalion Dr.
Sutanu Dutta Chowdhury and other Regular Army officers supervise the training programme of
the NCC. It is our pride to mention that our NCC cadets participated in the National Parade
during the Republic Day celebration in New Delhi several times. Apart from 160 boys cadet 55
girls cadet get the scope of taking NCC training from the session 2009-10.
N.S.S.
The NSS unit of our college is under the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports, Ministry of
HRD, and Government of India. Every year 100 students of first year are admitted to this unit.
This scheme is used to organise various Social Service Programme throughout the year in the
college campus and in different villages. It is a pleasure to mention that our college unit
represented Calcutta University in three National Integration Camps at Cuttack, Shillong and
Amritsar.

Concession in tuition fees in allowed to the Poor and Meritorious students each year along with

Cheap Canteen is mainly for the students. They can take their tea & tiffin from the canteen.

The college has a representative students’ union that manages the students’ problems, arranges
co-curricular activities of the college as well as takes care to maintain the academic discipline of
the college.
