The Simple Past is used to talk about actions or situations in the past.

Examples:

•I played football yesterday.

•He went to the cinema last weekend.

REGULARS IRREGULARS

There are two types of verbs according to form the past.

Verb in infinitive + -ed

There is no rule for the

conjugation of these verbs.

2. If the verb ends in –e, add –d.

Example:

The monkeys live in the jungle.

3. If the verb ends in a consonant after short, stressed vowel DOUBLE the consonant and add -ed.

Example:They stop to work at eight o’clock.

4. If the verb ending in “y” after a consonant, change “y” to “i” and add -ed.

Example:The dogs bury the bone last week

The IRREGULAR verbs can end in a variety of ways, with absolutely no consistent pattern. Here are some examples:

Infinitive Simple Past

to be → was/ were

to come→ came

to do → did

to drink → drank

to come → came

to eat → ate

to go → went

to make → made

to meet → met

to put → put

to run → ran

to read → read

to see → saw

to write → wrote
