RBI History of RBI Structure of RBI Main functions of RBI
It is the central banking institution of India. Controls the monetary policy of the rupee as well as US$300.21 billion (2010) of currency reserves and now US$30,210 crore(US$302.1 billion) The institution was established on 1 April 1935 during the British Raj in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. It plays an important part in the development strategy of the government. It is a member bank of the Asian Clearing Union. It has headquarters in Mumbai. Governor of RBI is Duvvuri Subbaro. Its ISO code is 4217.

He is the bankers' banker. He is also the banker to the government. He influences a wide range of micro and macro economic issues in the country. His autograph appears on currency notes. He controls the country's monetary, currency and credit systems. His actions influence not only the entire banking system, but also the stock markets, the economy and people's lives in general. Indeed, if he sneezes, the markets tend to catch a cold. He heads an institution which is the sole authority for issuing bank notes. The central bank chief also supervises all banking operations in the country. He supervises and administers exchange control and banking regulations. Besides administering the government's policy, he also issues licenses for new banks, private banks and foreign banks.
He helps formulates, implement and monitor the monetary policy. He announces the biannual Monetary and Credit Policy. He controls the country's interest rates on deposits and advances. He regulates and supervises the nation's financial system. He manages the Foreign Exchange Management Act. He monitors the issues and exchange. He also plans a role in helping promote functions to support national objectives. He makes the customer friendly policies. He also monitors the implementation of governmentsponsored poverty alleviation schemes.
It has four regional representations. The representations are formed by five members.

A commercial bank (or business bank) is a type of financial institution and intermediary.

Foreign banks have brought latest technology and latest banking practices in India. Foreign banks are not new phenomena in Indian banking system. Standard charted bank started its operation in 1858. Arrival of foreign banks started from Calcutta in 1860
second foreign bank was Comptorie dEscompte de Paris who opened the branch in Calcutta in 1860.City bank opened its branch in 1902. Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking corporation is functioning since 1953.
REGIONAL RURAL BANKS
The Government of India set up Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) on October 2, 1975
Initially, five RRBs were set up on October 2, 1975 which were sponsored by:Syndicate Bank. State Bank of India. Punjab National Bank. United Commercial Bank. United Bank of India.
The banks provide credit to the weaker sections of the rural areas, particularly the small and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, artisans and small entrepreneurs.
These refers to the banks that have their shares listed in Bombay Stock Exchange National Stock Exchange
Government of India holds its majority stake.
51% Shares areheld by Government of India 49 % Shares by other banks like SBI.
