HEAD COACH
BRIANETELMAN
CAREER COACHING HIGHLIGHTS AT BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Brian Etelman, a two-time All-American sprinter at the University of Georgia, enters his second season as the head coach of the Ball State track & field and cross country programs in 2016-17.
In his first season with the Cardinals, Etelman has helped his student-athletes secure eight top eight individual finishes at the Mid-American Conference Championships, as well as a pair of top eight relay finishes.
Three student-athletes also etched their name in the Ball State record books during his first campaign, led by senior Marie Lumpkin who earned a school record in the indoor weight throw (18.55m) and the second-best individual effort in the outdoor hammer (55.40m). Senior Michael Hull turned in the second-best indoor shot put (14.34m) and fourth-best outdoor discus (45.87m) in program history, while senior Danielle Dahl clocked the second-fastest indoor 800m run (2:11.91).
Prior to leading the Ball State programs, Etelman spent four seasons on the Miami (Ohio) women’s track & field coaching staff where he made a dramatic impact as the program’s sprints, hurdles, jumps and relays coach.
Etelman joined the Miami women’s track & field coaching staff in September 2011 and has made a dramatic impact as the program’s sprints, hurdles, jumps and relays coach. He has helped RedHawks’ student-athletes capture seven Mid-American Conference event championships over his four-year tenure, as well as establish 11 program records and a pair of MAC Championship meet marks. In addition, his
student-athletes have captured nine All-MAC honors and advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Round on five occasions.
Prior to joining the Miami staff, Etelman served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Central Missouri for the 2010-11 season, where he worked with both the men’s and women’s sprinters, hurdlers and relays. As a member of the UCM staff, he coached numerous NCAA Division II Championship qualifiers and helped guide the women’s squad to sixth-place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor championships, while the men’s program placed fourth at the indoor meet and eighth at the outdoor event.
During the 2008-09 season, Etelman was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, where he helped instruct the men’s and women’s sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. While working on the Bulldogs’ staff, he assisted in the development of several student-athletes who earned All-America honors and SEC event championships. He also worked with Olympic trials finalists.
As a student-athlete at Georgia in 2007, Etelman earned All-America accolades in the 4x400m relay which turned in a runner-up finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and continues to boast the second-fastest time in program history. Etelman also ran in the 4x100m relay which placed third at the 2007 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships with the sixth-best time in Bulldogs’ history.

LaTasha Jenkins posted a time of 22.29 seconds -- the fourth-fastest time by a college athlete in track and field history and an American collegiate record at the time -- as she sprinted to the NCAA national championship in the 200-meter dash June 6, 1999. She became BSU’s first national champion in women’s track and field. Two weeks later, Jenkins finished second in the 200 to Olympic medalist Marion Jones with a time of 22.36 at the USA Track and Field Championships. She was also featured in “Faces in the Crowd” in the June 28, 1999 issue of Sports Illustrated (See Below).

BALL STATE
2928
Ball State began as a private normal school in 1899. Eventually the campus and buildings were purchased by the Ball brothers, a group of Muncie industrialists, and given to the state of Indiana in 1918.
The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than 60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property.
Ball State has seven academic colleges and a graduate school with over 150 majors offered, including business, education, sport administration, telecommunications, exercise science, criminal justice, communication studies, journalism, political science and construction management.
