WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT
A good start goes a long way in providing sustained growth for any aspirant. Hence there is craze to
get into a good school, where placement is not only assured, but a great profile too is ensured. So far
the students had only the take of peers as well as disjointed news items to guide them as the kind of
jobs one can get when he or she joins a college. Social media based interactions also do provide
some information on the quality of placements to the students, but the quality and authenticity is
suspect.
This E-Book is an attempt to look at the kind of placements that an MBA aspirant can look forward to
when he/she applies to a school. For the first time, we have ranked Indias top 75 B-Schools on the
basis of the companies where their alumni are employed and the type of profiles they enjoy.

MBAs- Where they work and what they do
It is here, Indias first ever alumni profiling and ranking. And what a picture it presents for the top 75
schools!
The standing of a school in the comity of institutions is based on two parameters, quality of teachers
and quality of its students. While traditional ranking schema examines both quality of teachers
(faculty qualifications and research publications) and quality of students (only input quality in terms
of education and entrance test cut offs), little or no effort is made to evaluate a school on the basis
of a critical quality of its final output, the student who reaches the market.
It is the quality of companies which comes to campus and the kind of profiles that students get,
matter the most in the long run. We have attempted to capture both the details based on publicly
available profiles of B-Schools alumni in LinkedIn- the popular social media site for professionals. In
this issue we have ranked 75+ schools that had a reasonable number of profiles on LinkedIn (for a
detailed methodology see pages 122-23). Based on our analysis two sets of information is being
provided to the reader, a pen picture of the entire alumni base of the institute present on LinkedIn
and a detailed ranking of 75+ schools in terms of the nature of jobs and the nature of companies
that employ them.

The social media has come to play a larger role in the way we conduct our life and career. It is said
that by 2014 over 30% of all recruitments would happen online. It is high time B-Schools caught up
with the trend.
Where do you go from here?
We have made individual profiles for all the 75+institutions that we have ranked. But we have
presented only a sample of about 20 profiles spread geographically. Top colleges as well as Tier-1
and Tier-2 colleges are represented here so that you could get a view of how the alumni profile
distinctly changes as one move down the pecking order. For a detailed look at the alumni and
profiles of all the colleges ranked, do visit our portal www.bschool.careers360.com in the coming
days. The alumni data we present is partial and incomplete. In realty some institutions might have a
slightly different picture. We acknowledge the possibility of distortion and exhort all the institutions
to put up their aggregate alumni data online, so that organisations like us would be able to present
an unbiased and clear picture to the students and guardians.
Education is the second most important decision an individual takes, possibly next only to marriage.
So it is only in the fitness of things that he or she decides right and decides on the best.
Note:
1) All the information that we have gathered is based on publicly available information of the
individuals on LinkedIn.
2) The aggregate graphs do include current students who are undergoing summer internships and
have updated their profile with the name of the organisation
3) For schools which offer more than one programme, while the aggregate includes all the profiles,
only MBA, MMS, PGDM etc have been considered for ranking.
4) The school-wise analysis is based on the universe that LinkedIn presents when you search for an
institution and must be taken as indicative.
Pen picture of the alumni
In the following pages we present the alumni profile of the leading companies. For each institution
we have examined where the alumni live, which companies they work for and what kind of profiles
they enjoy.
What they do: Sector-wise classification
Division across Nineteen sectors
Sectors

The nature of alumni is distinctly visible here. Most IIMs have a sizable section working on
consulting, while many Tier 2 schools are dominated by Sales or Recruitment.
Where they live: Location-wise classification
We have gathered locations mentioned in user profile of all alumni, students of particular B-School
and shown in form of graph. This is a graph which ideally could help you decide whether a school is
provincial or regional. But updating their place of living is still not on top of many of the LinkedIn
profiles. But it surely provides a broad picture.
Where they work: Companies-wise classification
The top 10 -12 companies and the percentage of sample size which works there is presented here.
The MNCs dominate the top schools, while emerging and SMEs dominate the Tier 2 - Tier 3 schools.
A much more detailed analysis of this domain is presented in the ranking pages.

IBM, Infosys, Accenture, Oracle, TCS, and Cognizant Technology

Many alumni took up roles in sales and marketing in firms such as
ITC, Airtel and Supermax and Procter & Gamble.
According to the data captured, IIM A has 17.2%, IIM B 10.5%, IIM C

B-School status: The alumni verdict
For the first time in the country we have ranked Indias top 75 B-Schools on the basis of the
companies where their alumni are employed and the type of profiles they enjoy...
Final placement is the culmination of a long and winding journey that every MBA-holder undertakes
and the beginning of a new professional journey. A good start goes a long way in providing sustained
growth for any aspirant. Hence the craze to get into a
good school, where placement is not only assured, but
a great profile too is ensured. So far students had only
the take of peers as well as disjointed news items to
guide them as to the kind of jobs one can get when he
or she joins a college. Social media based interactions
also do provide some information on the quality of
placements to the students, but its quality and
authenticity is suspect.
To help the student plan well we have, for the first
time, attempted to look at the kind of placements that
an MBA aspirant can look forward to when he/she
applies to a school. Since colleges are very cagey about
providing the information we turned to the next available source -- LinkedIn. We identified 200-plus
colleges which have been ranked by one or the other publication and attempted to see the kind of
profiles its alumni present to the world. We narrowed our search to those who passed out in 2012
so that only entry level jobs come into our database. In other words the placement record of the
2010-2012 batch was alone considered across the colleges. Nearly 73 colleges had no or just a few
profiles on LinkedIn. After the first-level scanning, we identified 132 colleges for which at least 50
profiles were available. After scanning 15,801 profiles we could finally gain access to 5,231 profiles.
We grouped the profiles on the basis of type of firm (MNC, publicly listed and emerging) as well the
type of profile (managers, deputy managers and executives etc). Each profile was categorised into
one of the nine categories and analysed.
The results were amazing. Top ranking colleges had substantial managerial profiles. For example:
ISB, the topper, had almost no executive profile. We have only presented the aggregate ranking.
Disclaimer: The alumni data and the
analysis presented here are based on
the profiles at Linkedin. The data is
representative and by no means
complete or comprehensive. The data
carries with it all the limitations that
are intrinsic to creation, updation
and maintenance of profile
information by the members of
LinkedIn. However they are fairly
indicative of the general trend
