UNDERREPRESENTEDMINORITY FELLOWS
THE ASSOCIATION of The AUMF is a professional body
of 600 select African American
biomedical scientists and STEM
researchers and a nonprofit organization to facilitate avenues
whereby others enter and thrive in the field.
The mission of the AUMF is to develop and sustain a pipeline
of underrepresented minority biomedical scientists and STEM
researchers in the workforce by building a network that functions
as a resource to advance the professional growth of these
scientists, and to participate in dialogue that impacts national
science policy.
Established in 2007 by recipients of the UNCF/Merck Science
Initiative (UMSI) fellowship, the AUMF works to extend national
efforts to increase the percentage of African Americans earning
Ph.D.s in the biomedical science and other STEM fields.
The need is clear. According to
the National Center for Education
Statistics, African Americans make
up 13% of the US population but
less than 2% of STEM Ph.D.s and
3% of biomedical science Ph.D.s.
These figures are unchanged
since 1997, the most recent year
for which comparative data are
available.
While the number of science Ph.D.s awarded to underrepresented
minorities in 2006 was 10% (up from 8% in 1997), there was
not a positive shift in the African American population. Even
more alarming, recent data indicate that the number of African
Americans pursuing STEM degrees has actually fallen over the
last decade.
Hosted at Case Western Reserve University, the AUMF comprises
biomedical and STEM researchers, educators, innovators and
trainees who together are 15% of the nation’s African American
biomedical science pipeline. Accordingly, the AUMF is uniquely
positioned to address a national problem of African American
underrepresentation.
The AUMF is a registered nonprofit, charitable corporation.

MEMBERSHIP
The AUMF is a membership-based consortium of academic
institutions, government agencies and corporations leading the
advancement of the African American biomedical science and
STEM research Ph.D. pipelines.
A written commitment and plan to help build and sustain the
pipelines, such as acceptance of the AUMF’s Five by Five
Challenge, is expected.
Members pay an annual fee for participation in the AUMF, which
includes access to its resources.
INSTITUTIONSInstitutions nominate students or post-doctoral fellows to be
“Associates” of the AUMF during each year of the three-year
membership term.
Fellows and Associates benefit from:
• Connection with a National Community
of Minority Biomedical Scientists and STEM Researchers
• Online Peer Mentoring
• Professional Networking
• Job Resources and Professional Opportunities
• Subscription to the AUMF Newsletter
• Listing in the AUMF National Registry
of African American Biomedical Scientists
and STEM Researchers
Institutions also benefit from:
• Recruitment/Marketing: Display institutional logo,
a brief summary statement, and a website link on
the AUMF website
• Access to AUMF resources to support minority recruitment
and retention efforts
• Reference the affiliation in grant applications and reporting

PROGRAMS
PROFESSIONAL MENTORING PROGRAMA structured program of mentoring is among the most effective means of reducing attrition of talented minority scientists. The AUMF’s Professional Mentoring Program ensures that these scientists are supported, at every stage of their career, by AUMF Fellows who have advanced through the professional pipeline and have found success in their chosen path.
The Professional Mentoring Program encompasses a variety of potential career tracks -- including academia, medicine, and private industry. Through this program, the AUMF works to maintain a strong, consistent presence of underrepresented minority scientists in the scientific workforce.
PIPELINE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTThe Pipeline Development Project (PDP) will track, connect and support underrepresented minorities in biomedical science and STEM research at various stages of their education and careers.
The PDP will include a robust database and registry of minority biomedical scientists, STEM researchers and pipeline candidates, and be a tool to match these scientists with professional and educational opportunities. The PDP will be a significant resource for Member Institutions and Partners in their diversity and workforce development efforts.
FIVE BY FIVE CHALLENGEThe Five by Five Challenge calls for Institutional Members, both graduate and undergraduate, to enroll or place at least five African American trainees in biomedical science Ph.D. and/or M.D./Ph.D. programs, and for Partners to award five African Americans with research/training opportunities in biomedical science and/or STEM research, within five years of joining the AUMF.
By 2020—the deadline President Obama has given for America to regain its lost ground as the world’s most educated nation—the AUMF expects to have supported the enrollment in biomedical science and STEM research Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs and research opportunities of some 200 African American trainees.

PROGRAMSDIVERSITY IN SCIENCE SPEAKERS BUREAU www.sciencediversityspeakers.org
The Diversity in Science Speakers Bureau works with institutions
to host “Science and Career Days” and speaking engagements
where Fellows inspire minority students to become involved and
persist in biomedical science and STEM research.
The Speakers Bureau comprises Fellows from each of the
AUMF’s six regions, along with other distinguished minority
scientists from across the United States.
The Speakers Bureau fosters minority attraction to and success
in biomedical science and STEM research by facilitating
interaction between contemporary scientists of color and the next
generation of minority scientists.
Outreach to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) is offered to inspire
student persistence and achievement in the scientific endeavor,
and to provide workshops to support faculty development.
SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM
The AUMF recognizes the imperative to participate in the national
dialogue on basic science, clinical and public health research,
which impacts the African American biomedical science and
STEM research Ph.D. pipelines.
A scientific symposium and national summit, to be convened
in 2014, will both give visibility to excellent science by minority
scientists and be a national call to action to strengthen the African
American biomedical science and STEM research Ph.D. pipelines.

UMSI FELLOWS
The UNCF/Merck Science Initiative (UMSI) has played an
invaluable role in advancing African American scientists in the
American biomedical science workforce. The first UNCF/Merck
Awards were made in 1996; 13 to undergraduate students,
12 to graduate students, and 10 to postdoctoral fellows.
Fellows now stand at 600 strong—with 37 awards made each
year; 15 to undergraduate students, 12 to graduate students and
10 to postdoctoral fellows. UMSI Fellows are automatic Fellows
of the AUMF.
AUMF/UMSI Fellows include such notables as:
