Guru Purnima and the Lunar Eclipse
By: Aradhna Tiwari
Do you know about a special day dedicated to teachers?
To your surprise, it is not Teacher's day. It is Guru Purnima.
Do you know about this special day?
Guru Purnima is a special day for Gurus. Students give respect to their Gurus, on this
day. A Guru is one, who teaches us new and good things. A Guru could be
your teacher or parent, or anyone who teaches you an important lesson in
life. The word Guru comes from two words, ‘gu’ and ‘ru’. In Sanskrit, ‘gu’
means darkness, and ‘ru’ is the remover of that darkness. So, a Guru is
one who removes the darkness of our life.
Guru Purnima celebrated in India, Nepal and some other countries. In Ne-
pal, it is celebrated as Teacher’s Day.
This year, Guru Purnima is on July 27th. This day also fell upon the longest lunar
eclipse. You may have heard of the Mahabharata. Do you know who wrote it? It was
written by Maharishi Ved Vyas. This day marks the birth of Guru Vyas.
It is also said that Guru Purnima was the day that Shiva became the first Guru. It is
believed that he began the transmission of yoga to the Saptarishis on this day.
What is Waymo? Google's parent company is ‘Alphabet Inc’. In 2009, Alphabet Inc ini-tially started working on the cars that drive by themselves and called them 'Waymo'. Waymo is an autonomous car development company and subsidiary of Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc. When they first started, Waymo announced that they will integrate the self-driving technology into current car models. In 2015, the self-driving cars were tested for the first time on public roads in Austin, Texas. How does Waymo work? Waymo cars have devices called 'range-finders' mounted on the top. They are lasers that create a detailed 3D map of the road the car is mov-ing on. This helps the car to manoeuvre by itself. Waymo cars have ra-dars and sensors that assist in detecting objects around them. This helps prevent accidents. Waymo cars have met with few accidents but the company is working on improving the technology to be accident-free.
Where can I ride a Waymo?
I am sure all of us are excited to take a ride in this super-cool car, but
there is a small wait.
Currently, Waymo is has been launched in the USA. But don’t get disappointed!
Like any new technology, I am sure we can hope to see Waymo cars in India in the near future!

Potholes Potholes Everywhere!
By: Poornima Kamatgi
Rains bring happiness to all of us. After summer, these rains cool down our earth as well. But potholes on the roads are bad. In many cities, potholes are causing accidents.
The studies show that more people die in accidents due to potholes, than terror attacks. The people who construct roads in cities use low quality material when laying the roads, this causes potholes to form. These roads are not constructed keeping the traffic, rain-fall, load of heavy vehicles like trucks, in mind. Thus causing potholes to form, in turn causing accidents and deaths.
In New Delhi, the Supreme Court is worried about the growing number of pothole related deaths. It has asked Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety to look into this matter and come up with a report within two weeks.
The municipalities of respective cities should take the matter of potholes seriously, and
work towards fixing roads with potholes. Meanwhile, the people riding two-wheelers should drive
slowly on potholes ridden roads.

Ashwin – India’s all-rounder on a Rise!
By: Aarti Wahaal
Ravichandran Ashwin, an all-rounder, is a popular young
player of the Indian Cricket team. Born and brought up in
the Southern part of India, his achievements prove that
hard work can take you to places.
Ashwin came into limelight with his brilliant bowling in the
shorter form of the game in the IPL. He played for Chen-
nai Super Kings in the year 2010. But since his test debut
against West Indies in 2011, Ashwin has made it a habit
to pick up wickets. During IPL, he got noticed for his in-
line bowling. The gifted spinner made his international de-
but in 2010 against Sri Lanka. He is an all-rounder and is currently ranked number 2 among bow-
lers and all-rounders in Test cricket.
Ashwin has earned a name and place for himself in the Indian Cricket, with his achievements. He
became the fastest bowler to reach 300 wickets in just 54 matches. He broke Dennis Lillee's rec-
ord, which was made in 1981. With his 300th wicket, he is the only fifth Indian bowler to achieve
this feat. Ashwin's current stats show that he has taken 316 wickets in
58 matches. His current average is 25.34.
Ashwin now aims to take his wicket count to at
least 600 wickets. With age at his hands (31
years), he stands a chance to achieve this
number easily.

Hotel Transylvania 3 - A Monster Vacation
By: Preeti kapur
Do you like to watch animation movies? I’m sure we all love to
do so. Recently, I went to watch Hotel Transylvania - A Monster
Vacation.
The movie is the third movie of the Hotel Transylvania series.
The movie has a superb star cast. The movie released in India
on 20th July 2018. The movie is produced by Sony Animation
Pictures.
The movie begins with Dracula, the lead character, who is tired of running a hotel for monsters.
His daughter, Mavis plans a surprise vacation for him. The entire Drac family and friends set on a
vacation on a cruise. It’s fun and frolic. During the journey, Drac gets attracted towards Captain
Ericka. Ericka is the great grand-daughter of the vampire hunter, Van Helsing. She is now half
woman-half machine. She is on a secret mission to destroy the monster kind! It is now, Mavis'
turn to save her father and others.
The movie gives out some good messages like forgiving and loving others. It also tells us about
good communication between parents and kids. The colourful locations and characters are ap-
pealing. The kids liked the monsters and their comedy. The dinner scene in which both Drac and
Mavis eat overly garlicky Mexican food and suffer from gastric disorder leaves the kids rolling
with laughter. Drac and Ericka’s romance is amusing. All the characters are monsters. But they
are cute and colourful with Blobby, being my personal favourite.
Cute characters, funny dialogues, and good music make it worth a watch, for the whole family.

Plants carrying robot that chases Sunlight when needed
By: Sonia Amoli
We all know that plants require sunlight, water and carbon
dioxide for their survival. Plants prepare their food only
when they get enough sunlight. Humans and animals can
move about in search of food themselves. But the plants
are stationary. They cannot move to find their food. So
what happens to the plants when they don't get enough
Sunlight?
They would not be able to prepare food and hence die.
That is exactly what Sun Tianqi, the founder of China-based electronics company called
'Vincross' had in mind while making Hexa, the plant carrying robot! In an exhibition, he saw a
shrivelled sunflower lying in the shade. This made him think how helpless plants are. So he de-
cided to develop a plant carrying robot.

It was one of the most exciting World Cup finals. Both the teams delivered spectacular performances.
They brought the highest goal tally in a world cup final since 1966. France outperformed Croatia and won
by 4-2. The man of the match was Antoine Griezmann.

Let's now see what the robot does:
Hexa moves about, to capture sunlight
as and when re-
quired. It even gets
playful with humans.
It is known to stomp
around when it is look-
ing for water. Though
plants need sunlight,
wouldn't they also feel
the heat when it
is too sunny? Yes, of course, they do. During such
situations, Hexa uses the special sensors that help it to escape to a shady place when needed!
This special plant robot has a personality of its own, and can make its demands and presence felt!
Wow, what a use of Ar-tificial Intelligence!
Oh! Wait till you watch Hexa move. Scan the QR code to watch the video.
