Coach (Tactical Edition) is an
advanced, multi-purpose, real-time Air
Traffic Control (ATC) Simulator.
Voice is a continuous speaker
independent voice recognition and
response system designed to
automatically act as the pilots during a
simulation.
UFA combines ATCoach and ATVoice to
produce the AN/TPN-18, AN/TPN-31 &
AN/FPN-67 Radar Training & Proficiency
Simulator.
The simulator’s core capabilities include:
Arrival Control
Final Control - Surveillance Approaches
Final Control - Precision Approaches
Instructor Station Control
Voice Recognition and Response Control
Multiple radar model emulation; AN/TPN-18,
AN/TPN-31, and the AN/FPN-67 are supported.
A console version of this system is in use at Fort
Rucker, AL as their primary training device
during the radar phase of the Air Traffic Control
Operator course.
The system allows the instructor to simulate
virtually any air traffic situation and manipulate
the events during a scenario to meet specific
training objectives.
The system allows the student positions to
operate in either Airport Surveillance Radar
(ASR) Arrival or Final Mode. In Final Mode,
surveillance (ASR) or precision approach (PAR)
mode may be selected.
A desktop version is used at all Army National
Guard Air Traffic Service Unit locations, and is
being fielded at the following Active Army
locations:
US ARNG: Arkansas - Arizona - Florida - Indiana -
Louisiana - Maryland -Massachusetts -
Minnesota - Mississippi - North Carolina -
Oklahoma - Pennsylvania - Tennessee - Texas
US Army: Alabama - California – Georgia - Kansas -
Kentucky - New York - Texas – Afghanistan -
Germany - Iraq - Korea - Kuwait
Simulator Features
Displays
ATCoach provides the user with the flexibility to
customize and/or control the display to their
individual preferences.
Depending on the mode selected, the displays will
realistically depict the look and feel of the AN/TPN-
18, AN/TPN-31, or AN/FPN-67 radar systems.
At the Arrival position, a circular Planned Position
Indicator search display is presented. At the Final
position, in PAR mode, a dual beta display that
depicts the azimuth and elevation cursor is displayed.

Controls & Configuration
Full soft-key menu functions supported; controls and
prompts are identical to the real system.
Video maps may be defined within the site file and
brought up for display.
Site data files can easily be developed or modified by
the user to change to airfield facilities or locations.
AN/TPN-31 ASR Display
Weather & Clutter
Clutter and precipitation may be displayed at any
time, position, heading and speed by the user.
Wind may be enabled or disabled as desired. Up to 20
different layers may be activated at a time.
Exercise Characteristics
Exercise scenarios can be easily created or modified
using the data preparation tools.
The instructor position can assume complete control
over the controller positions, aircraft, and events
within an exercise.
Events or actions can be preprogrammed, and
triggered at any time during the scenario.
Popup aircraft may be generated and entered into the
exercise at any time.
ATExpert monitors ATC rules prescribed by FAA
Order 7110.65 during each exercise. If a rule is
violated, the expert window appears and cites the
specific rule both audibly and visually.
Voice Recognition & Response
ATVoice software provides voice recognition and
pilot response capabilities at each radar position.
A voice recognition monitor window is available for
each radar position to view phraseology and
commands as each transmission is made.
Exercises are recorded for synchronized playback
with Controller voice input. Each radar position is
recorded independently and can be played back either
individually or simultaneously.
