Asylum seekers…

23th March 2005

They are people who have left their own

country claiming persecution and are seeking

a place of safety. They may be given refugee

status in a new country and be able to stay.

Who are asylum seekers?

Today’s task…

• Your task is to design a board game that will describe the journey of an asylum seeker from the minute they arrive in Britain (start) to their gaining refugee status (finish).

• Along the way there may be things that help them in their quest and there may be things that hold them back.

• You could show this by using snakes and ladders OR by asking the player to move forwards or backwards.

• When you arrive you so as soon as possible to ask for asylum.

• You are carrying proof that you are in danger.

• Your lawyer presents a very good case for you.

• You are granted free accommodation.

• You manage to work illegally to earn money.

• You pay for a stolen National Identity card so you can now work “legally”.

• You are given Humanitarian protection and stay for up to 3 years.

Ideas to help you… • You do not go to ask for asylum for over 6 months.

• You are carrying no identification.

• You cannot prove that you are in danger.

• You lie in your interview and are found out.

• You go to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and it is closed.

• You try several charity phone lines but they are busy.

• You are not allowed to work legally and are running out of money.

• Your appeal is dismissed and you are sent back to your own country (go back to the start).
