TheASDPNationalConferenceisanannualeventthatprovidesanopportunityforASDPalumniandotherinterestedcollegeanduniversityfacultymemberstoshareresearchrelatedtoAsianculturesandsocieties,aswellasstrategiesforeffectivelyinfusingAsiancontentintoundergraduatehumanities,socialscience,business,andsciencecurricula.Thisyear,theASDPNationalConferenceishostedbyPortlandCommunityCollegeandisco-sponsoredbytheAsianStudiesDevelopmentProgramandtheAssociationofRegionalCentersforAsianStudies.TostudyAsiaistostudyconnections.Whetherthroughwide-anglehistoricallensesorthroughtightly-focusedanalysesofcontemporaryissues,studyingconnectionsamongpeoples,cultures,ideasandidealsenhancesandbroadensunderstanding.The2017ASDPNationalConferencepresentspapersfromfacultyandstudentsinthehumanitiesandsocialsciencesthatexploreconnectionswithandwithinAsia.Inadditiontoprovidingaforumforsharingdiverse,disciplinaryandinterdisciplinaryresearch,theConferencewelcomesproposalsthatexplicitlyexplorehowtoconnectundergraduatestudentswithcurrentscholarshiponAsia.KEYNOTESPEAKERS
Dr.AlisaFreedmanTalkTitle:"TokyoinTransit:JapaneseTrainsasSocialandCulturalVehicles"March3,2017Thesightoflongtrainsrapidlysnakingbetweenskyscrapersandofcommuters,especiallyworkersinsuitsandstudentsinuniforms,floodingstationplatforms,characterizesthealluresanddifficultiesofTokyointheglobalimagination.Themostefficient,largest,andbusiesttransitnetworkintheworld,Tokyo’spublictransportationincludesmorethan100trainand13subwaylinesthatcarryatotalofmorethan28.85millionpassengersdaily.Tokyovehiclesaresocialandculturalspacesdifferentfromothermetropolitancommuternetworks:theyareameanstoseehowthecityhasaffectedwayspeoplebehave.IwillsurveyimportanthistoricalchangesinTokyo’ssocialfabricmadepossiblebydevelopmentsinmodernmasstransportation.Commutertrains,streetcars,andbuseshavechangedhumansubjectivityandartisticproduction,givingrisetogenderrolesthathavecometorepresentJapan.TheextensionofTokyo’stransitnetworksmadeitpossibleformenandwomenofdifferentsocialclassestowork,play,andinteractwitheachotherinunprecedentedways.PrewarcultureinvolvingcommutervehiclesanticipateswhatisfascinatingandfrustratingaboutTokyotodayandprovidesinsightintohowpeopletrytomakethemselvesathomeinthecity.

ManyearlyChinesethinkersendorsedthespiritualidealofwuwei,oreffortlessaction.Byadvocatingspontaneityasanexplicitmoralandreligiousgoal,however,theywerefacedwiththeparadoxofhowonecantrynottotry,whichlaterbecameoneofthecentraltensionsinEastAsianreligiousthought.ThistalkwilllookattheparadoxfrombothearlyChineseandcontemporaryperspectives,drawinguponworkineconomics,socialpsychology,cognitiveneuroscience,andevolutionarytheorytoarguethatthisparadoxisreal,andisintimatelytiedupwithcooperationdilemmasinlarge-scalesocietiesandconcernsabouttrustandmoralhypocrisy.

AdditionalInformationabouttheConferenceSponsorsTheEast-WestCenterpromotesbetterrelationsandunderstandingamongthepeopleandnationsoftheUnitedStates,Asia,andthePacificthroughcooperativestudy,research,anddialogue.EstablishedbytheU.S.Congressin1960,theCenterservesasaresourceforinformationandanalysisoncriticalissuesofcommonconcern,bringingpeopletogethertoexchangeviews,buildexpertise,anddeveloppolicyoptions.TheCenterisanindependent,public,nonprofitorganizationwithfundingfromtheU.S.government,andadditionalsupportprovidedbyprivateagencies,individuals,foundations,corporations,andgovernmentsintheregion.OvermorethanfiftyyearsofservingasaU.S.-basedinstitutionforpublicdiplomacyintheAsiaPacificregionwithinternationalgovernance,staffing,students,andparticipants,theCenterhasbuiltaworldwidenetworkof62,000alumniandmorethan1,100partnerorganizations.
TheAsianStudiesDevelopmentProgram(ASDP)waslaunchedin1991toenhanceteachingaboutAsiaatAmericantwo-yearandfour-yearcollegesanduniversitiesattheundergraduatelevel.Inrecentyears,ASDPhasalsoincludedAsianfacultyinselectedprograms.Sinceitsinception,morethan1,500professorsfromtheU.S.andAsiahaveparticipatedinASDPprograms.
AjointprogramoftheEast-WestCenterandtheUniversityofHawai‘i,ASDPoffersavarietyofcontent-focusedfacultyandinstitutionaldevelopmentprogramsandactivitiescenteredaroundsummerresidentialinstitutes,fieldseminarsinAsia,workshopsontheU.S.mainland,andanannualacademicconference.
TheAssociationofRegionalCentersforAsianStudies(ARCAS)iscomposedofthe19regionalcentersofASDP.ARCASisanon-profitorganizationaffiliatedwithASDPandworkscloselywithASDPinsuchinitiativesasthedevelopmentoffacultydevelopmentworkshopsandASDP'sannualconferences.TheAssociationofRegionalCentersforAsianStudiesiscommittedtopromotingthestudyofAsiaandAsianculturesinundergraduateprogramsatcollegesanduniversitiesthroughouttheUnitedStates.ThemissionofthisAssociationistoprovidehighqualityprogramsforfaculty,administrators,staff,andstudentsatmemberinstitutionsandotherinstitutionsservedbytheregionalcenters.Thepurposeoftheseprogramsistoenhanceteaching,learning,andresearchinAsianstudies.PortlandCommunityCollege(PCC)isthelargestpost-secondaryinstitutioninOregon:PCCservesnearly90,000full-timeandpart-timestudents.PCChasfourcomprehensivecampuses,eightcentersanddozensofindependentlocationsthroughoutthecommunitythatoffercoursesandprovidestudentservices.PCCfillsauniquerole,onethatoffershighqualityeducationandopportunitiesforstudents,whichinturncontributestothevibrancyofPortland'seconomiccommunity.SpecialThanksgototheAsianStudiesCommitteeandInternationalizationInitiativesCommitteeofPortlandCommunityCollegewhoorganizedandsponsoredtheconferenceeventsinPortland;toPeterHershockandthestaffatASDPfortheirhelpinorganizingtheconference;toGeorgeP.Brown(SlipperyRockUniversityofPA)andKathleenDossfororganizingtheConferenceProgramandschedule;andtoDenysePeterson(PortlandCommunityCollege)forherthoughtfulfinishingtouch!
