As the European Commission says, although there is no universally accepted definition of social enterprise, there

are some key distinguishing characteristics.

1. Combination of social purpose and entrepreneurial spirit

Social enterprises combine the social and societal purpose of their activities with an entrepreneurial spirit

of the private sector. Social enterprises devote their activities and reinvest their surpluses to achieving a wider social or community objective either in their

members' or a wider interest. (European Commission)

2. Social value creationSocial entrepreneurship is the process of pursuing

innovative solutions to social problems. More specifically, social entrepreneurs adopt a mission to

create and sustain social value. (Gregory Dees at Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership

)

3. InnovationSocial entrepreneurs innovate by finding a new product, a

new service, or a new approach to a social problem. (Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship)

4. Self-sufficientWhile a business entrepreneur might create entirely new

industries, a social entrepreneur develops innovative solutions to social problems and then implements

them on a large scale in a sustainable way. (Ashoka)

Creation of a definition

The social entrepreneur is a mission-driven individual who uses a set of entrepreneurial behaviours to deliver a

social value, all through an innovative, entrepreneurially oriented entity that is financially independent, self-sufficient, or sustainable. (freely

adapted from Samer Abu Saifan)
