Artifact or PortraitArtifact or Portrait

Test your skills at telling the difference between an

artifact and a portrait.

Instructions

A. Identify the picture as an artifact or a portrait.

B. If the item is an artifact, explain how it’s represented.

C. Decide whether or not the label is written correctly for the portrait or artifact.

D. If the label is incorrect, suggest what needs to be fixed.

THE DAUGHTER

When Sharon was 25, the doctor told her she could never have children. She now has a lovely daughter named Lisa. Sharon says that family is the most important thing to her.

PORTRAIT

• Correct label

• (Identifies people & significance)

• Try adding other pictures of family members, inspirational quotes about families

• Also make sure that this person is willing to share this sensitive topic with other people

THE BALLOON

This is a picture of a hot air balloon; Alan proposed to Cindy in one, which was one of the memorable events in her life.

ARTIFACT

• Visual representation

• Try adding a real balloon spaced out with a little basket underneath with cloud stickers• Replica

THE SMOKER(CLIP ART)

Bill quit smoking after 15 years.

ARTIFACT

• Visual representation

• Inappropriate for school presentation

• May not be something that your person wants to share

• Artifacts are supposed to represent a significant item – is this something that Bill wants to be remembered for?

COWS(TOY KEYCHAIN)

Every summer as a child, Missy would visit her Uncle Joe and Aunt Lana’s farm. Her job was milking the cows, which is the reason why this is her favorite animal.

Artifact

• Replica representation

• Label is correct

• Try using pushpins or tacks to attach the keychain, but cover the fastener with a sticker or try gluing a milk jug cap over the metal keychain ring

EATING(STICKERS)

My Paw Paw eats all day long because Gram is a good cook. He likes to make goulash.

ARTIFACT

• Visual or replica

• Try adding a menu, a checkered “table cloth,” recipe cards, behind it to make it stand out

• This would count as a collection (one artifact)

WEDDING

Penelope wedding dress.

PORTRAIT

• Label is incorrect

• Has a person in it

• Try layering different colored lace behind the portrait and hang little pearls from it

• OR frame the photo with ribbon and hot glue flowers at each corner

TOM HANKS(FLICKR PHOTO)

Jimmy’s favorite actor is Tom Hanks. In 1992, he met Mr. Hanks at a Yankees game.

ARTIFACT

• Visual representation

• Although this involves a person, it is not a relative and would count as an artifact

• Try using old filmstrip at the top and the bottom of the clip art (but not on the sides) or gluing popcorn around the picture

SKATING(REAL SKATES)

Although Juana loves winter, she broke her ankle the first time she ever tried to ice skate.

ARTIFACT

• Actual representation

• These would be too heavy to put on the board, but you could bring them in as long as you put a replica.

• Try making your own skates by using a white baby boot and popsicle sticks painted silver and creating a small pond out of blue construction paper

SHOPPING

To help pay for business school, Maggie worked as a secret shopper. Not only did she get paid $5.00 a day (which was a lot of money in the 1940’s), but she also got to keep everything she bought. This Target receipt and five dollar bill remind her Maggie of her fun job.

ARTIFACT

• Actual representation

• Real money could be stolen

• Real receipts are great, but it should be ironed or flat

• Try using some glitter or Wiki sticks to surround these items

WINTER

Mai grew up in Cambodia and saw snow for the first time when she moved to the US in 1952. She describes it as “cold, but yummy.”

PORTRAIT

• Involves a person

TRAVEL 1

Wally travels a lot.

ARTIFACTS

• Visual or replica representation

• Incorrect label

• These items would count as a collection

THE BABY(PHOTOCOPY)

Davida worked as a maternity nurse for nearly nineteen years.

ARTIFACT

• Actual item

• Incorrect label (missing the importance and doesn’t explain the connection with perfect attendance)

• Try framing some blue and pink construction paper

AIRPORT

Here is my grandfather who is waiting for his son (my dad) Brian, who was deployed in Iraq for two and a half years. He hasn’t seen him in nearly seven months. They cried when they saw each other.

PORTRAIT

• Correct label

• Try adding military embellishments (from a scrapbooking store)

TUTORING(BROCHURE)

My cousin Steve volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Helping others makes Steve a hero to many students.

ARTIFACT

• Correct label

• Instead of laying it flat, fold it in threes and tape the back to the board OR

• Attach a library card pocket with stickers of children or helping hands and place the brochure in the pocket for individuals to view
