Instructions

A. Identify the picture as an artifact or a portrait.

B. If the item is an artifact, explain how it’s represented.

C. Decide whether or not the label is written correctly for the portrait or artifact.

D. If the label is incorrect, suggest what needs to be fixed.

THE DAUGHTER

When Sharon was 25, the doctor told her she could never have children. She now has a lovely daughter named Lisa. Sharon says that family is the most important thing to her.

• Artifacts are supposed to represent a significant item – is this something that Bill wants to be remembered for?

COWS(TOY KEYCHAIN)

Every summer as a child, Missy would visit her Uncle Joe and Aunt Lana’s farm. Her job was milking the cows, which is the reason why this is her favorite animal.

• Try using pushpins or tacks to attach the keychain, but cover the fastener with a sticker or try gluing a milk jug cap over the metal keychain ring

• Try adding a menu, a checkered “table cloth,” recipe cards, behind it to make it stand out

• This would count as a collection (one artifact)

• Try layering different colored lace behind the portrait and hang little pearls from it

• OR frame the photo with ribbon and hot glue flowers at each corner

• Try using old filmstrip at the top and the bottom of the clip art (but not on the sides) or gluing popcorn around the picture

SKATING(REAL SKATES)

Although Juana loves winter, she broke her ankle the first time she ever tried to ice skate.

• These would be too heavy to put on the board, but you could bring them in as long as you put a replica.

• Try making your own skates by using a white baby boot and popsicle sticks painted silver and creating a small pond out of blue construction paper

SHOPPING

To help pay for business school, Maggie worked as a secret shopper. Not only did she get paid $5.00 a day (which was a lot of money in the 1940’s), but she also got to keep everything she bought. This Target receipt and five dollar bill remind her Maggie of her fun job.

Here is my grandfather who is waiting for his son (my dad) Brian, who was deployed in Iraq for two and a half years. He hasn’t seen him in nearly seven months. They cried when they saw each other.

• Try adding military embellishments (from a scrapbooking store)

TUTORING(BROCHURE)

My cousin Steve volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Helping others makes Steve a hero to many students.

ARTIFACT

• Instead of laying it flat, fold it in threes and tape the back to the board OR

• Attach a library card pocket with stickers of children or helping hands and place the brochure in the pocket for individuals to view
