“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—They must be felt with the heart.”
- Helen Keller
Quote of the Month
May 2013
A story of
Ida Kato
In 1925, a little house could be
seen creeping down a dirt road in what
was then rural Salt Lake City. Pavement
had not yet reached this outer section of
town, but the roads were already meticu-
lously laid out, in a great grid of streets.
Ida Okubo’s parents had been renting
their farmland from a Chinese family who
followed the wave of those who built the
Central Pacific Railway and settled in the
Great Basin among a burgeoning Chinese population. The proper-
ty where the house stood had been sold to the school district to
build a new school for the growing community. The Okubo family
had to move, not only the
farm, but also their home.
Sometime in the late 1800’s
the city lost control over its
mandate specifying minimum
ten-acre lots and some own-
ers had split their lots. The
Okubo’s heard there was
land available just a few
blocks down the road for sale
and luckily found a five –acre plot. They had just enough for a
down payment and it was decided this would be the Okubo family’s
new address. But with four kids what were the Okubo’s to do?...
You can read more about Ida’s life story in the solarium.

Celebrated April Birthdays Theresa’s
TIdBITs
By: Theresa Jackson, LVN
A Tribute to Moms Everywhere
My mom will be 62 years old soon.
Like all children I am blessed with a
mother that guided me through life,
many of my mother's sayings still re-
sound. I continue to appreciate many
of them to this day. As Mother's Day
approaches, I thought it would be a
fitting tribute to discuss how some of
her famous, never-to-be-forgotten
sayings apply to my everyday life,
even now. I think most of you will re-
late to these timeless pieces of wis-
dom:
1. Always wear clean underwear:
you never know when you
might get in an accident.
2. Did you finish your homework?
3. Look both ways before you
cross the street.
4. Eat your vegetables or you
can’t have dessert. Or...People
in the world will starve if you
don’t finish your plate.
5. Clean up your room.
6. Go ask your father.
7. Do you think money grows on
trees?
8. Don’t you think it’s past your
bedtime?
9. Are you planning to sleep all
day? Get up!
God bless, Mom, and thanks for the
great words of wisdom.
Happy Mother's Day to moms
Everywhere!

A Visit From the
L.A. ZOO
On Thursday, April 4, 2013, residents gathered in the Solarium to hear a
educational presentation from docents of the L.A. Zoo and to meet a few
furry friends! During the presentation we learned that giraffes stand at
an amazing eighteen feet tall, alligators protect their young by carrying
them in their mouths. Residents were able to feel the fur coats of coy-
otes, leopards, and deer , as well as, see an elephant’s tooth & an os-
trich’s egg. Residents also enjoyed meeting a few animal friends.
Among them, Gabby the guinea pig & Sammy, the Skink.
Thank you to the L.A. Zoo, docents and animal friends who
volunteered their time to visit Nikkei Senior Gardens!

The first monorail was
built in Russia in 1820
by Ivan Elmanov.
Over the course of
the next century the
use of the monorail
began to rise. Be-
tween 1850 and 1880
Japan and the United
States, mainly in Disneyland Theme Parks in California
and Florida began installing monorails. Now, Japan has
one of the highest uses of the monorail with ten currently
operating monorail systems and seven, which have been
discontinued. Of the ten monorails, three are very
famous. The Ueno Zoo Monorail In Taito, Tokyo, Japan
built in 1958, is not only the first monorail in the world to
be built in a Zoo, but also the first monorail ever in Japan.
The Tokyo monorail is known to be one of the busiest
and most successful monorails in the world. While the
Chiba Urban Monorail is the worlds longest suspended
monorail, at a total track length of 15.2 kilometers or 9.4
miles.
