Aroostook County Safety Symposium The Aroostook County Safety Directors Association is proud to once again offer the opportunity for a local safety symposium to benefit the businesses and municipalities in Aroostook County. This year’s conference features extended offerings, running over four days. The symposium is broken into sessions over the 4 day period and the cost for registration is listed with each session. You may attend as many or as few sessions as your schedule allows. (Please note: Pre-registration is required for the M.U.S.T. Excavation Safety session on Monday March 30, the Forklift - Train the Trainer on Monday March 30, ADA on Monday March 30, NFPA Life Safety on Wednesday April 1, the MSHA Refresher on Wednesday April 1, and the 10-Hour OSHA Construction class on Wednesday April 1 & Thursday April 2 . You cannot sign up at the door for these six sessions.

The updated ADA Standards include new specifications for employee areas, entrances, single user toilet rooms, recreation areas and more. We focus on what’s new, what’s been dropped, requirements when alterations are undertaken, when an elevator is required and the revised formatting. Representatives from the Maine State Fire Marshall’s Office, the Maine Human Rights Commission and the Maine Accessibility Coordinator Office, Bureau of Rehabilitation Services will discuss unique Maine requirements and their roles with plan review, implementation and enforcement. This class is a must for design professionals, code enforcement, contractors, municipal/school officials, recreational organizations and other agencies.

Session #A1 Chainsaw Safety

This session will cover hazards inherent with chainsaw operation and some of the controls
to minimize them, including: maintaining the chainsaw in serviceable condition, personal
protective equipment, kickback, - causes & prevention, basics of operation, accessing
advanced medical services.
Session #A2 Lockout – Tagout
Instructor, Peter Noddin, CSP, OHST, Twin Rivers Paper
An overview of the essential elements of a hazardous energy control program as required by
OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.147 with an emphasis on identifying tasks requiring Lockout, the
inter-relationship between machine guarding and lock-outs, adequate written lockout
procedures, and the three most common causes of lockout-related accidents since the
adoption of the standard 24 years ago.

The new standards clearly identifies the responsibility of an employer to; develop and
implement a fall protection policy; provide adequate fall hazard abatement before
employees can perform workplace activities; provide and verify that continuous fall
protection is available for their employee.

Confined Spaces are some of the most dangerous work environments employees are
exposed to. Hazardous atmospheres are a deadly and prevalent hazard in confined spaces.
This session will cover the how and why of air monitoring in confined spaces. The OSHA
requirements for air monitoring in confined spaces will be covered.

The Life Safety Code is the most widely used source for strategies to protect people based on building construction, protection, and occupancy features that minimize the effects of fire and related hazards. This class will go over the basics of Life Safety Code.

The OSHA Outreach Construction Training Program provides training
for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, and
prevention of the safety and health hazards in the construction
workplace.
This one-day course will cover generic MSHA training.
However, site-specific training will also need to be
conducted once you return to your respective job sites.
Directions
From South:
Exit I-95 in Houlton and travel to Presque Isle via Rt.1. Travel
north through town and at the traffic light after WalMart, turn
left onto Rt. 163 (Connector Street). Continue on Route 163
for one mile until you see a sign (to your right) for Skyway
Industrial Park, Northern Maine Regional Airport and
Northern Maine Community College. Turn right at that
intersection onto Central Drive. Turn Right onto Edgemont
Drive (first right on Central) until you see the sign for NMCC.
Park in the General Purpose parking lot.
Registration will take place in the lobby of the Edmunds
Building.
From North:
Travel South on Rt. 1 into Presque Isle. Proceed straight
through the first traffic signal (by the entrance to the
Aroostook Centre Mall), remaining in the farthest right lane of
traffic. Just prior to the next traffic signal the lane will merge
right onto Rt. 163 (Connector Street). Continue on Route 163
for one mile until you see a sign (to your right) for Skyway
Industrial Park, Northern Maine Regional Airport and
Northern Maine Community College. Turn right at that
intersection onto Central Avenue. Turn right onto Edgemont
Drive (first right on Central) until you see the sign for NMCC.
