POVERTY REDUCTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROSPECTS WITHIN THE NATIONAL MDG FRAMEWORK - ARMENIA
Knowledge-Comparative Advantages-Partnerships
Armenia
Today’s reality
MDGs and Armenia – a rocky path • 2000 - Armenia joined the UN
Millennium Declaration • 2005 – 1st nationalized MDG Status
Report • 2008 - Armenia's Sustainable
Development Program adopted, including the MDGs achievements
• 2010 – 2nd National MDG Progress Report launched
• 2011-Revision of the Sustainable Development Program
Likelihood of achieving MDG national targets
• Likely – HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability
• Hard to Achieve – poverty, education, child mortality, maternal health, global partnership for development
• Unlikely – gender
Independent experts/public opinion is that Goal #7 - Environmental
Sustainability – is Hard to Achieve

UNDP/Armenia Community Development Program
Since 2001, a wide range of support to over 150 rural and urban communities in Armenia has been developed, including rehabilitation infrastructure and creation of income generation opportunities.UNDP was able to improve living standards in the targeted communities by rehabilitating over 45 social and economic infrastructures, including education, health, gas, irrigation and water facilities. Given the importance of agriculture as a source of livelihood in the regions of Armenia UNDP in Armenia implemented over 50 agricultural and agro-processing projects in the last 9 years.More than 600 start-up entrepreneurs have been trained and loans were provided to 140 of them with the total amount of USD 450,000, thus creating more than 250 new workplaces.
Forest Covered Areas
Forest cover of Armenia is about 8.1% - according to
an Assessment of the Status of the World`s Remaining Closed Forests , Nairobi, Kenya,
2001.
UNDP Armenia• Has planted around 1000 ha of forest
since 2007 • Assessed legal/institutional frameworks
of forest fire management• Provide forest fire equipment to

Before After
Armenia suffers an average of 33 million USD in damages from natural disasters each year. Landslides and mudflows are among the most devastating of these disasters. Due to the climate change, the extreme events are going to intensify in scale and frequency.
