Are Your Startup Priorities Gold or Garbage?

I seriously can’t imagine it…

Can you imagine being 20 minutes from Venice, Italy and not going?

Can you imagine being three hours from Washington D.C. and never experiencing

it?

Really, 20 minutes from Venice and you never go?

Isn’t that a crime somewhere in some law book?

You want to know what makes it even more of a crime? My husband and I know the people who

have lived this very scenario – no joke

It boggles my mind when I think of all the incredible opportunities they miss out on simply because they are comfortable at home.

They don’t feel like they need to go, they argue.

They don’t feel like they are missing any kind of experience.

They’re happy where they are!

Then I realized…

As I reflected on these people and their reasoning, the paradigm began to shift.

My eyes were opening and I learned another lesson that I knew I needed to put into business practice: It’s all about Priorities!

What were my priorities?

Where were they taking me and my business?

Was I the little business on the corner with the faded sign that everyone passed by because the sign wasn’t my priority?

Company

Was I the one-man-show always strapped for cash that kept hearing, “Get a VA. Get a VA. Get a VA!” But my priority was getting it all done and getting help later?

Was I the crazy shark that was a hard-ball sell because money came first, and customers fit in there somewhere?

Or maybe…

Was I  the self-conscious owner who always gave freebies, discounts and pro-bono work to have the ‘happiest’ customers in the world?

As I reflected on what I thought was a heinous crime, missing out on Venice and Washington D.C.,

I realized that priorities – known and undiscovered – drive EVERYTHING we do.

Company

You see…?

There can be a dramatic change in results when the priorities are reversed.

The business with the faded sign could get a new one and direct new clients in from the street.

The one-man-show could get an affordable part-time VA before he self-destructs to help menial things so he could focus on income generating tasks instead of administrative crap.

And of course…

The crazy shark and self-conscious owner – you can see where I’m going with this – if they would

have reversed their priorities to take care of customers first and focus on attracting the right

kind of customers.

It would have gone something like,

1. Get on the train prepared and confident.

- Instead of: be afraid of the train

2. Drink in the majesty of Venice.

- Instead of: never go to Venice

It wasn’t a choice, it was a Priority!

So here is a fun little way you can start the paradigm shift. It’s a vision board.

So get that board out and for now, we’re going to call it the PRIORITY board.

We’re about to fill that sucker with the priorities you have, or want to have, in your business.

Then your going to look at that board, everyday and take your temperature.

That’s right, take your temperature, but your going to base your temperature on a scale from 1 to 10 and it’s going to strictly revolve around the priorities in your business – not the heat of your body.

Company

Daily check-in with your priority board and take your temperature – 10 being the

BEST – on each individual priority.

• Did I outsource menial tasks and focus on the income generating tasks?

• Did I take steps to increase my relationship with customers to ultimately increase my bottom line?

• Did I focus on what I was worth instead of discounting to get ‘sales’?

Whatever it is on that priority board check yourself. Be accountable to it everyday.

Speaking only from personal experience, you can’t afford to go another day without checking yourself and your business

priorities.

So, until the next ah-ha! moment, go forth and MAX that!

Whatever it is…

Make it happen with your priorities in place and peace of mind. You can do this!
