My stakeholder An Indian graduate MBBS doctor seeking to apply for his post-graduate in a specialization of his choice.

Insight India has the largest number of medical colleges in the world, a total number of 326

But… There is only 12000 PG seats against 45,600 UG seats The number of graduates = 40,000

To give a perspective… There are19000 UG seats against 32,000 PG seats in the USA

Because of this an average undergraduate doctor needs to wait between 1 – 3 years, to get through a highly competitive all India entrance exam. Each exam costs at least INR. 45000 And, he may not even get into a specialization of his choice, because someone else who ranked better than him gets the 1st preference.

How might we develop a better selection system for a graduate MBBS to get into a specialization of choice while allowing him/her to earn & practice?

Like flight simulators, this concept would have a space where the stakeholder can practice!

1

1 Building the prototype using an old toy, dough for skin, and kitchen knives for operating on

1 Prototype method – role playing with my stakeholder & getting feedback

Feedback

The idea works! Important for a doctor to be up to date with his practical skills, especially when your studying for 1-3 years. When you finally get that PG seat your skills are pretty rusted!

+ WHAT WORKED

This idea is related to surgery but there are also people in the pathology division that needs a lab, or a gynecologist who needs to practice.

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

How do we implement this? Who will fund this? Do we students need to pay for it?

? QUESTIONS

Add other fields -  Which are non-surgical -  AI simulator sessions of question

& answer scenarios, this is will also us to practice speaking to patients

! IDEAS

A Live hospital network, where one can observe (via internet) live operations across hospitals to learn and…a virtual tryout of the operation to learn better!

2 Prototype method – role playing

getting my stakeholder to role-play the scenario

2 Prototype method – getting my stakeholder to role-play the scenario

The idea of having a device (like an IPAD) which connects to the LIVE hospital network, which could be accessed from your computer.

This device creates a virtual operation scenario & can have special sensory devices which tracks your hand (doctors) movement, perspiration, etc. Like how the Samsung phone can sense your movements.

2 Prototype method – role playing with my stakeholder

Like the stylus creating different operating tools which work accurately.

2Prototype method – paper mock-ups of the website Propped on a computer screen to explain the experience

The idea for the live network is called – Docpract (doctor + practice). The opening screen is simple like Google & it allows you to prepare (study/research), observe (operations, interviews, etc.) & operate (practice virtual operations)

Like airport boarding screens, once you click operate you have details of the hospitals (a), the type of surgery (b), the doctor (c), and schedule (d)

(a) (b) (c) (d)

2 Prototype method – paper mock-ups of the website

Once you start to operate you have 2 screens 1) of the LIVE view of the operation 2) The software asking you questions as you go along the surgery (e.g., which scan would you do for this operation) The device also tracts the vital statistics of the patient (without revealing the identity) + time the entire operation

The doctor practices the same operation virtually.

Feedback

Can work because this is what we do in medical college, especially love the way we can practice complex surgeries, which we only can do under a doctor.

+ WHAT WORKED

Maybe we could also interact verbally with the doctor.

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

Some doctors won’t like this, because they feel disturbed, so how do we do this then?

? QUESTIONS

Will definitely use this device at home. Would like it if we could add specialties before the operation feeds come up.
