circulating library for the benefit of itsemployee and of the towns along its tineThe collection grew quite slowly but thework excited so much interest that MrSt John brought the matter to the atten-tion of Mr Andrew Carnegie whose phi-lanthropic gifts have done much in aid oflibraries in the South

The matter was given Instant attentionby the steel king who inclosed his checkto Mr St John for 1000 in aid of thescheme which he pronounced entirelyoriginal on the part of a railway com-pany and most praiseworthy He re-

quested occasional reports of the progressof the work

Mr St Johns scheme is to send thelibraries from town to town puttingthem in each place under the care of anassistant industrial agent of the lineand free access may be had to the libraryby the townspeople the books oelng retainel ten days The plan has excitedwidespread interest

HHlersThornton cases which have beenfiguring in the courts of King GeorgeCounty for some time have finally cometo a close The cases grew out of thefailure of C W Hillers and wife whoagreed to purchase from J Taylor Thornton the elegant Belle Grove estate tomeet their payments They paid 5uO cashtook possession and refused to vacatewhen the deferred payments were notmet Mr J T Thornton and his brotherGrayson Thornton on February I wentto Belle Grove and notified the Hillersthat they must give the property

During the conversation Mrs Hillerssprang at J T Thornton and slapped hisface Thornton caught her by the wristsand held her while she kicked his shinsWhile this was going on young Hillersand Grayson Thornton had a tight Whenquiet was restored the Hillers agreed toleave They did so two days later Theyhowever swore out four or five warrantsagainst the Thorntons for assault cand when the cases came up before Jus-tices the Thorntons were heavily fined

They appealed to the Coumy Courtwhere the decisions of the Justices wereset aside and all the warrants dismissedThe case attracted wide attention andable counsel was employed on both sides

Eckford of Portsmouth Va about sixtyfive years old shot himself through thehead on the street here today He wasremoved to the jail and tonight thereare hopes of his recovery

Eckford is a professor of music and apiano tuner He dresses well and wears-a flowing white beard He stood nearlytwo hours this morning with his hat oftat the place he shot himself While stand-Ing in front of Mr Swartzweklers houseProf Eckford called to the latter to goand stand by a tree nearby Mr Swartwelder wanted to know why he shouiddo so Eckford replied 1 want you towitness something I am going to killmyself At the same time he drew a re-

volver Dr Richard Gerstcll who camealong heard part of the conversationand said For Gods sake man dont doanything like that and at the sametime proceeded to move toward the agedman as If to disarm him

Eckford told him at once to stand backor he would kill him Dr Gerstell withdrew and then Eckford fired and fell to

the pavement Eckford was carried tothe jail bleeding but not unconscious
