The piece? Concerto forPiano, Orchestral Winds andPercussion.
The composer? UNT alum-nus Steven Bryant, who stud-ied under Cindy McTee, UNTregents professor of composi-tion.
Paul said it’s exciting to be aclassical music performer whogets to work with a living com-poser. The piece includes twomovements. The first buildsgradually to a big peak, then“quietly goes on its way,” Paul
said. The second movementincorporates jazz.
Bryant used a descending setof five dyads — or two-notechords — that are used to buildthe music in both movements.Bryant, who earned a master ofmusic degree in compositionfrom UNT in 1996 and creditsMcTee with contributing to hissuccess as a composer.
“In addition to her excellentinsights into viewing and expe-
riencing time in music, she wasa stickler for the detailedpreparation of the score andparts,” Bryant said. “Her tute-lage was equal parts musicaland practical, and I believe thishas been significant to my sus-tained career as a freelancecomposer.”
Bryant plans to attend thepremiere performance, as wellas a Friday recording sessionfor the composition.
Paul performs with the UNTWind Symphony at 7:30 p.m.today in Winspear Hall at theMurchison Performing ArtsCenter, located along Interstate35 East at Avenue D and NorthTexas Boulevard. Tickets cost$8 to $10.

Misery loves company, and Huntington Beach, Calif., band La Dispute has plenty. The band is the headliner in the Parade of Flesh showcase at
Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Saturday.
Deep into the shadowsBy Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor
La Dispute’s latest release, Wildlife, reads like alove letter to a shadow.
The only problem is that lead singer JordanDreyer isn’t so sure who, or what, is casting thelong, dark shadow.
“I used to never think of death / or hear voices,”Dreyer screams — the songs always erupt intorasping screams. “I used to feel like everythingwas perfectly in order / a normal life / I guessthere came a departure.”
So Wildlife exhumes past hurts, present disap-pointments and the random tragedies — a schiz-ophrenic son stabs his elderly father during a psy-chotic break, and more than one dead teenager ismemorialized, here — that knock the wind out ofthe sturdiest communities. The HuntingtonBeach, Calif., band — born in Grand Rapids,Mich., as it were — bills itself as an indie punkoutfit that is heavy on experimentation.
La Dispute stops in Denton on Saturday night,a recruit of the Dallas-based production compa-
ny, Parade of Flesh. Joining Balance andComposure, All Get Out and Sainthood Reps., LaDispute is set to crack the plaster at RubberGloves Rehearsal Studio.
The punk label fits Dreyer’s over-heated bel-lows, but the music itself is all alternative rock, evoking the ultra-mournful, baritone guitarlicks of Tool and the sad, noisy nostalgia of PinkFloyd.
If La Dispute is indeed a punk group, it’s not somuch about grating on the nerves of “The Man”as it is about moving the young masses to con-template the uncertain things of life, and howthey hurt, please and take you unawares. In “TheMost Beautiful Bitter Fruit,” the band gives anupbeat tempo to a song about the night bringingout the least in the narrator as he seeks out asoulless hook-up: “No love / no life / no history /just touch, just chemistry / Just a roaring under-current, simple and sensory / Young bodies, warm skin, perfect symmetry / And it’s a momentharmless, it’s energy / It’s like medicine / it’s selfdiscovery.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday. Cover is $12 forages 21 and up, and is $14 for ages 20 and under.Rubber Gloves is located at 411 E. Sycamore St.
Sounds like: The Toadies officiating the funer-als of too many innocents, going away after amad, exhausting tantrum.
Goes good with: You, a punching bag and allthe rage making that vein in your temple tick likea bomb.

OPENING FRIDAYLockout (1/2) If a futuristic space
prison with 500 of the world’s most
violent and dangerous criminals
cryogenically frozen was to some-
how undergo an inmate revolt, who
would emerge as the unquestioned
leader of such an intergalactic gang
of gruesome murders? Why the
Scots, of course. At least that’s
according to this sci-fi circa 2079
action flick, directed by a pair of Irish
filmmakers: James Mather and
Stephen St. Leger. They co-wrote it
with producer Luc Besson. The MS
One is a hulking, orbiting jail that
puts its prisoners in “stasis,” or a
deep sleep. But when the president’s
daughter (Maggie Grace) visits to
question its methods, a prisoner eas-
ily gets loose and soon the ship is
overrun by criminals who immediate-
ly fall in line behind the Scottish Alex
(Vincent Regan) and his more psy-
chotic sibling Hydell (Joe Gilgun).
Obviously, such awkward circum-
stances can only be resolved by a
solo, heroic mission from a reluctant,
irascible protagonist. Ours is Snow
(Guy Pearce), an agent who has been
unjustly deemed a criminal after a
mission gone wrong. This is a
brawnier Pearce (L.A. Confidential,
Mildred Pierce), and if Lockout is
meant as an action hero audition, he
certainly has the needed charisma.
He’s the only reason to see the film.

NOW PLAYINGTitanic in 3-D () If any film
should be redone in 3-D, it’s Titanic.
And if any filmmaker should be the
one doing the redoing, it’s James
Cameron. And so ironically, for a
film that hasn’t got an ounce of
understatement in its three-hour-
plus running time, Titanic in 3-D is
really rather subtle and finely tuned.
Cameron has stayed true to the
content of his 1997 film, the winner
of 11 Oscars including best picture
— and that includes his clunky
script filled with hokey dialogue and
broad characters. What also
remains intact is the earnestness of
Titanic, the absence of snark or
irony, and the sensation that you’re
watching a big, ambitious, good-
old-fashioned spectacle that can
withstand the test of time. Rated

Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth and Anna Hutchison are shown in a scene from The Cabin in the Woods.
Out of thewoodwork
By Boo AllenFilm Critic
Breaking convention can begreat fun. And the new horrorflick The Cabin in the Woodsdoes that, taking gleeful delight in punctur-ing those tired and formulas of the genre.
This Cabin could rightfully be called ahorror satire, but one like the Screammovies in which an actual tale of horrorplays out while all the proscribed rules areexamined and, in this case, set into play byan unseen hand.
Joss Whedon, creator of TV’s Buffy theVampire Slayer and Angel, co-wrote Cabin, bringing along his knack for transportingthe supernatural to the everyday normal.Co-writer and first-time feature directorDrew Goddard complements Whedon’svision by keeping the film grounded until,in the end, it looks like he simply cannotcontrol himself any longer as he finallyunleashes a comically overstocked closetfull of monsters.
Whedon and Goddard begin with a keeneye towards an established horror recipe:
five handsome young people arrive at anisolated cabin in the woods for a weekend.Along the way, they meet the requisitecreepy freak at the gas station. Then, theyarrive at a dilapidated old structure in themiddle of nowhere.
With all the cliches in place, the script fol-lows a standard path, setting up a scenarioin which some malignant force will thenappear to wipe out the group. The writersshow their familiarity not only with thisstandard American trope, but they also
pause long enough to show theirghoulish erudition by tossing inreferences to popular Asianschoolgirl phantoms, Swedishvampires and several other
international favorites. But they throw a curve by setting up a
control central, a main location in whicheverything has been planned down towhich method will be used for the comingcarnage. The command center looks to besome sort of governmental agency run by acouple of irreverent meatballs, deliciouslyplayed against type by Richard Jenkins andBradley Whitford. And to compound theegregious aspects of the enterprise, theentire organization runs a betting pool onthe winning predator — zombie, vampire,Jason, Freddy, and so on.
Much more goes on during Cabin thancan be described here, but it is a movie thatbegs not to be taken seriously, which wewon’t.
But we will enjoy it. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film
critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Big dreamsDenton Community Theatre
takes a chance on Alcott’s classicBy Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor
Lousia May Alcott indebted herself to readers when she pub-lished Little Women in 1869.
The creative team of Allen Knee, Mindi Dickstein andJason Howland brought a new surge of interest to the novel in2005 when the musical they adapted from Alcott’s novel openedon Broadway.
Denton Community Theatre opened its staging of Little Womenover the Easter holiday and it runs through this weekend.
Buster Maloney, a Denton performer probably best known forhis comedic chops in the Greater Tuna, took on his first musicalwith the March women.
“I read the book when I was 10 years old, and I just loved thestory,” Maloney said.

“Of course, I grew up withfive older sisters, and theyspoiled me. And also, mymother’s maiden name was‘March,’ and my grandmotherwas very much like AuntieMarch.”
Maloney said there wasanother reason he wanted totry his first musical withAlcott’s classic.
“I just love working withwomen,” he said. “I love it. Ireally enjoy watching thembecome the best performersthey can be.”
Little Women the musicalhas a lot in common with LittleWomen the novel. The four sis-ters — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy— look to their beloved mother,Marmee, to run their Concord,Mass., home while their fatheris serving in the Civil War. Toldthrough the eyes of the adven-turous tomboy and aspiringwriter, Jo, the musical is abouta family leaning on love, indus-triousness and imaginationduring lean and uncertaintimes. Jo is a woman caught upin a century of rapid change. Asshe cherishes her sisters andhopes to sell her stories to con-tribute, she struggles with theblooming affection of her bestfriend and the boy next door,Laurie. Is marriage and moth-erhood her destiny, or can shebe a writer who has a husband

Little Womenand home?
Little Women hasn’t hurt foradaptations. Mervyn LeRoydirected the 1949 film (starringJune Allyson and Peter Law-ford), and director GillianArmstrong led Susan Sarandonand Winona Ryder through thestory in the 1994 film.
Denton Community Theatregave studious attention to theshow’s designs — Nelda Evartsproduced the 19th century-style costumes, and musicdirector Ray Staniszewskiguides the orchestra through ascore that is contemporaryBroadway (composer Howlandwas an intern during the work-shop of Frank Wildhorn’sJekyll & Hyde, and it shows).
“One thing I love about theshow is that it’s a very vivid pic-ture of life in the 1860s, partic-ularly in the novel,” he said.“Nelda Evarts costumes arejust beautiful, and she took thison wanting it to be really great. We really see the family tryingto make it during the Civil War.Their fathers were off in theCivil War and I think that waspart of it as well.”
The family’s trials and tri-umphs are told through Jo:Meg’s marriage and twinbabies, Amy’s conceit, andBeth’s sweetness and fragility. The family’s struggle alternatewith Jo’s fanciful, melodramat-
ic stories of adventure. Andthen there’s Marmee, themother hen to an adoring flockof chicks. He lauded Dentonsinger and actress Maria Harris(The Sound of Music) for bothher vocal pyrotechnics and theemotional heft she brings tothe role.
“Maria’s stage presence is sostrong,” he said. “As soon as shewalks onto the stage, the girlsjust gather around her like littlebirds. But you feel her influ-ence in the play, just like youfeel [Marmee’s] influence inthe novel. Just her strength ofcharacter. You see her doubt, wondering if she’s doing theright thing. She really hasdoubt about the way she’s rais-
ing these women, and thatmakes her really very human.”
The music propels the story.“Astonishing” finds Jo dealingwith her relationship withLaurie. “Some Things AreMeant to Be” puts the family’sgreatest tragedy into a singlesong. “Small Umbrella in theRain” conveys the baby of thefamily, Amy, growing up.
“I think it’s a beautiful show. The set, the story, the music,”Maloney said. “That’s whatpeople say when they leave thetheater. They say it’s beautiful.”
