Ourclasswillcover1,000+yearsofhumanhistoryfromeveryregionoftheworld,muchofitinplacesyou’ve(probably)studiedverylittle.Itwillbeinteresting,sometimesfascinating,butalsodemanding.It’salottoabsorbinonlyninemonths.
Yoursummerworkwillaidyoutofindsuccessintheyearaheadbylettingyouaccomplishafewcriticalobjectivesbeforeschoolstarts.Theseinclude:
• fillinginthe“historygap”betweenRomeandtheRenaissance–particularlyemphasizingGreco-Roman/Europeanculturalandpoliticaldevelopment(i.e.theWesternheritage)–ensuresyouhaveasenseofcontinuitybetweentheclassicalandmodernworlds
• buildingafoundationofknowledgeaboutpre-ColombianAmerica,Africa,andAsiauponwhichyoucanconstructmoreextensiveregionalhistories
• identifyingkey“turningpoints”inhistory–momentswhentheworldseemssomehowtohaveshiftedinanewordifferentdirectionasaresultofnewtechnology,discovery,conquest,oridea
• forminga“bigpicture”viewofthesweepofworldhistoryoverthelasttwomillennia
Summerassignmentsmustbehandwritteninastitchedcompositionbook.Yourfirsttest–overthesummerreadings–isplannedforthesecondweekofschool.Tomotivate,encourage,andrewarddiligence,youwillbepermittedtouseyourcompositionbookonthetest(i.e.onlyhandwrittennotes–typednotesmaynotbeused).
