VOIP Team Converts A Site Each Day
Before Thanksgiving Break
Sites cut-over this week include:
• Cy-Creek HS 11/14/2016
• Spillane MS 11/15/2016
• Cy Woods HS 11/16/2016
• Dean MS 11/17/2016
• Jersey Village HS 11/18/2016
High Level Stages of VOIP Conversion at a Campus:
1. Deployment – Phones are placed at campus
2. Review – Review notes, outstanding issues, etc.
3. Cutover – Campus is converted to VOIP
4. Day 1 Support – Post conversion support
In an attempt to keep pace with the aggressive VOIP
conversion schedule, the VOIP team converted one
site per day the week before the Thanksgiving
holiday. The CFISD VOIP team is comprised of
Charles Newton, Roland Padilla, and David
Glennon. With the daunting amount of work
required, the team was able to solicit additional help
from Presidio, AT&T, and a campus service
technician. Leo Chan from Presidio, Stuart
Henderson from AT&T, and Richard Cruz from
Cook MS were able to step in and offer much
needed additional support.

Quality of Service Deployed at Lamkin ES
Elizabeth Montes worked with David Deitsch
from Presidio to deploy Quality of Service
(QoS) to our first campus, Lamkin ES. QoS
refers to the capability of a network to provide
better service to selected network traffic over
various technologies. This feature lets you give
priority to critical traffic, prevent bandwidth
hogging, and manage network bottlenecks to
prevent packet drops. CFISD plans to tag
highly important voice data with special QoS
markings. The voice traffic will then take
priority over other data traffic. This will help
ensure that users will not miss out on any part
of their voice call and the call will sound crystal
clear.

With the ECN team’s never ending quest to find storage space
for switches, phones, wireless access points, UPS units, etc.,
Mike Raspet and Ken Gibson jumped in to support their
cause. Mike remembered that we no longer need the former
UPS room that was used to support Data Center 3. Mike and
Ken decided to clean the room and remove the leftover
supplies from the build out of Data Center 3, including three
cement pallets weighing over several hundred pounds. The
room is now clean and ready for delivery.

While most of CFISD was enjoying Thanksgiving holiday, members of the ECN team were busy upgrading
the switching infrastructure at the four transportation centers. Elizabeth Montes and Anna Senties led the
CFISD, Presidio, Gigabit, and MCA Communications effort. The team was able to convert the four sites over
the following two day window:
Monday Morning, November 21st – Telge Tuesday Morning, November 22nd - Falcon
Monday Afternoon, November 21st - Eldridge Tuesday Afternoon, November 22nd - Barker

Each site presented its own set of unique challenges, but the team was able to overcome all
obstacles. Three of the four transportation centers also have Early Learning Centers (ELCs) that
are network attached. Therefore, the ELC locations were converted, too.

the following:
• Closet Relocation
• Fiber Relocation
• Switches Configured and

• Installation of New Cabinets
• Cable Management
• Security, HVAC, Fuel

Subject: Excellent support!
Frankie,
I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all the support that we’ve received from both
Larry and Paula’s teams! Larry and Austen have worked with my team to help us find a WiFi
solution that will allow teachers and students to connect wirelessly to their new Promethean
panels. It’s been quite a task and I feel confident that they both understand what is needed for our
teachers and will help us find the right solution!
Paula’s team, specifically Greg and Andrew, have spent a great deal of time helping us problem-
solve and trouble-shoot all things Google! They are extremely busy but always make time to help us
fix issues as they arise. This week, they helped us with Google Hangouts and Google Expeditions
and were most patient and kind through the process!
Both teams are the unsung heroes who quietly do incredible work behind the scenes to make things
work for CFISD! They don’t get paid enough in my book! I wanted you to know how much we
appreciate them!
Have a great evening,
Becky

Preparations for Purchasing Video Systems Upgrade Including
Cameras for Special Education Senate Bill 507 Requirement
November 9, 2016
Frankie Jackson, met with Paula Ross, Greg Rhodes, Mike
Diaz, Kim Bowlin, Chief Bragg, and Juan Cruz on November 9,
2016 to discuss the purchases for the video security systems
upgrade RFP #16-09-4999. The cost for the video equipment to
support 10 special education classrooms with cameras is
$118,925.24. Juan has the action to break the cost down by
campus. Once he does this we will determine a funding source.
Paula, Greg, Kim, and Mike talked about the data center
backup storage for the special education classroom video
retention. Reviewed the technical details about how to configure
the storage, either with 2 nodes or 3 nodes. The RFP covered 2
nodes. To keep the special education files completely
separated from all other data in the storage area network will
require a 3rd node, at a cost of an additional $115,000.
Technical discussions are underway to determine the best
strategy.

Addressing Campus Concerns about Technology Support at

November 11, 2016
Frankie Jackson worked with Jay Johnson during the week ending November 11, 2016, to finalize the Human
Resources Personnel Services concern submitted on October 19, 2016 by Robison elementary. Frankie and Jay,
with Jennifer Miller’s support, pulled historical service information to analyze the work that had been completed
at Robison. They also looked at customer survey responses and average response times by priority. See here to
read the response back to Human Resources.
As a secondary measure of follow-up, Frankie Jackson visited Robison elementary on November 11, 2016. She
checked wireless connections (indoor and outdoor), including using a personal device (Bring Your Own
Technology). As shown in the following picture on the left, the outdoor wireless strength was excellent. In walking
across the street as far as one could walk, the wireless never lost connectivity. This is great news.
She also met with Brandon Splawn, the computer technician supporting Robison, to talk about the technology
needs at the school. We walked around to find the teacher that had submitted the complaint however a substitute
teacher was in her room. This campus will be on the watch list to assure service is provided in a timely manner.

Villar, Polly Gifford (EPS), Mike Raspet, Andrew Tran, Greg
Rhodes, and Paula Ross to discuss the following topics:
• Building out of the fiber network in the Bridgeland area
(Southwest side of the district)
• Completing the redundancy fiber links. There are areas of the
district that are vulnerable for a fiber cut where there isn’t a
redundant network connection path
• Considering Internet peering with a direct connection straight to
Microsoft and Google and Internet 2.
• Bidding Internet services as our ICTX contract will be up in 2017
• Assessing the e-rate schedule for requesting reimbursements
for Internet, new schools, and redundancies in fiber links.
As a result, the following RFPs will be solicited with a plan to go to the February 2017 board meeting for approval.
• RFP #1 Internet Services, Peering options, and Internet 2
• RFP #2 Fiber connections for redundancy
• RFP #2a Fiber connections for new schools
• RFP #3 Network electronics for new schools

Report to the Long Range Planning Committee
On the 2014 Bond Technology Infrastructure
Frankie Jackson participated in a meeting on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the Long
Range Planning Committee members to review the progress of the 2014 Bond Referendum. She was at the
meeting to specifically address the technology infrastructure component of the Bond. A copy of the
presentation is here. Frankie was proud to see the technology infrastructure component of the bond be
highlighted first, as shown page pages 3-6. Committee members expressed their gratitude for staying on
course and accomplishing a great amount of work in a small period of time. The presentation was well
received!
Frankie Jackson confirmed and filled 2015-2016 E-Rate funding reimbursements with ESC12 E-Rate Works, the district’s E-Rate consulting firm, to certify and request funds to be transferred to the district from the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC). A total of $963,734.42 is scheduled to be released to the district within the next month.
The following table shows a breakdown of the services that are refundable. The entire team is to be commended for these district savings. In particular, Katie Hernandez is instrumental in making sure all of the paperwork is appropriately filed. This is a monumental effort and Katie’s work is greatly appreciated!

workload that ultimately has a direct impact on our
department. Each quadrant lead is still responsible
for the sites within their quadrant, but the plan is for
Michael to help manage the Facilities related tasks
associated with both new construction sites and
newly renovated sites.

Operational Highlights
Ray Leung worked with Layer 3 Communications to adjust airtime utilization (or channel utilization) for our
wireless network. Although we have a brand new, robust wireless network that provides fast access for new
devices, we were still receiving complaints about slow wireless access. As it turns out, the complaints were
coming from users that have older edge devices.
After Ray adjusted the channel utilization to better accommodate both old and new devices, the user
response has improved dramatically.
