Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally, incepted 10 years back, has undeniably unlocked the fervor of
countless passionate fans worldwide and gone an extra mile to renew good-humored rivalries involving home and overseas drivers time and time again.
The energy-sapping event was first held in 2003 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first running of the original event and is today held bi-annually bringing together some of the biggest names that captivated the rally-sport incredibly on planet earth.
But Safari Classic fascination was in the air when the all-Kenyan crew of Rob Collinge and Anton Levitan won the celebrated event in their Datsun 240Z.
Again, the all-Kenyan Datsun
260Z crew of Collinge and Levitan claimed their second consecutive victory in the 2005 edition but this time round Collinge, the CEO of Robs Magic, flabbergasted all and sundry by announcing his retirement from the sport after this victory.
A FATHER AND SON CREWIn 2007, history was made when
a father and son crew of Bjorn and Mathias Waldegard triumphed in emphatic fashion in a Ford Escort Mk1 with Waldegard senior admitting steadfastly that the win was in fact emotional.
Ian Duncan navigated by Amaar Slatch in a Ford Mustang gave Kenyans a third victory when both retuned this massive contraption at Sarova

DT DOBIE DONATES ROUTE ‘SWEEPER’ FOR KQ SAFARI CLASSIC
Leading car dealer DT Dobie & Company (K) Ltd. has donated a Nissan Hardbody X38 (better konwn as “Atoti”) for use as the official ‘route sweeper’ during Kenya Airways East Africa Safari Classic Rally 2013.This is the same car that was used as a ‘Double Zero’ during the eight-leg Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) 2013 series.Rally Manager Ashok Bhalla
while expressing gratitude to DT Dobie for their generous gesture was excited by the fact that the 2012 model of
the Hardbody is an ideal choice to crisscross the entire Safari Classic route in Kenya and Tanzania
With the 5th edition of the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally here with us again, we look back at some of the unforgettable moments and crews who made indelible marks in the legendary 4000km event
Whitesands.Waldegard and Mathias Waldegard
won again in a Porsche 911 thus becoming the second driver to have won the event twice after Kenya’s Rob Collinge who won it in 2003 and 2005.
The premiere edition also welcomed the legendary all-ladies crew of Michele Mouton and Ana Goni in a Ford Escort.
NO QUESTION OF WITHDRAWING
“Apart from our problems in the first day, it’s been great. We had no chance of victory, no fight, but we were here to see East Africa and that’s why we carried on. There was no question of withdrawing at all; it is still fun to drive fast over some wonderful sections. It was very tough, but extremely well organised and nice to come to Kenya. This rally is very special; the open roads, dust and the rough roads. There is no comparison to anything in the world; it is unique,” said Mouton.
Alastair Cavenagh also entered in the 2003 event navigated by his best friend Carl “Flash” Tundo in a Ford Escort and had this to say when the dust finally settled in the port city of Mombasa: “We’re happy to finish, but it’s a bit disappointing as the car’s not what it was supposed to be. When we had clean runs we were either first or second in the sections and we should have been able to give Rob more of a run for his money. It’s not been as tough as in the olden days, but it’s given us a feel for what it was like. I’m glad to have been competing two decades later though!”

INFAMOUS USAMBARA MOUNTAINS
In 2005, former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist was lucky to make the finish after breaking the steering rack on the closing day. He and co-driver Ana Goni were however happy to finish second in the Escort.
The dramas centered on Belgian Gerald Marcy who struck problems in the second section during the 2007 edition, at the infamous Usambara Mountains, when he hit a rocky bank and broke his front suspension. He tried to drive out of the stage but failed. Consequently, he had to wait for the other competitors to finish the section and for his service crew to drive twenty-two kilometers in to mend the Porsche. Marcy fell back from second to fourth overall to the benefit of two other Porsche drivers, Frederic Dor and Geoff Fielding who occupied second and third places behind Waldegård. Dor is one of the unsung heroes of the Safari Classic having been to the podium thrice in a trot in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
The 2013 edition starts on Thursday 21st November and ends on Friday 29th November. The mammoth 4,100 kms (2,000 kms of competitive sections) start from Sarova Whitesands in North Coast and will traverse the famous Taita Hills stages (synonymous with the WRC Safari) then cross over to the border into Arusha, Tanzania where it crisscrosses Monduli, Longido and Mbulu mountains.
The cars will be returning to Kenya into the Amboseli National Park (around the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro) at Oltukai Lodge.
The second half of the route (after rest day on Monday November 25) heads towards Kajiado Town, Olepolos, Whistling Thorns, Lake Naivasha (north of Nairobi) then back to Mombasa through Taita Hills, Wundanyi, Ndii, Matope and Majengo. The spectator stage for Nairobians is scheduled for November 24th at Portland Cement’s Blue Triangle as from noon. The 2013 have a record entry of 60 entrants from all over the world.
2014 MINI SAFARI CLASSIC RALLY PLANS UNDERWAY
Plans are afoot to stage the 2014 Mini Safari Classic Rally from 18th to 20th April 2014.This is an inaugural three-day event anticipated to rekindle memories of the original Safari which coincided with Easter holiday back in the days. What’s more, its a classic spectacle envisaged to offer fans a rare taste of classic machines rapidly taking the Kenyan rallying scene by storm. The Mini Classic starts from Nairobi on a Good Friday with Day 1 programmed cover several kilometers through to Voi town.

KCB Kilifi Rally Round 8 of 8
Having already taken some impressive scalps in a breathtaking season, legendary Ian Duncan
was at it again with victory in the KCB KIlifi Rally 2013.
Navigated by Amaar Slatch in a Mitsubishi Evolution 9, Duncan registered his third win of the 2013 season to rack-up the second overall position in the 2013 Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) series in the absence of speedsters Carl Tundo, Alastair Cavenagh and Azar Anwar.
Second overall was Quentin Mitchell who lost to Duncan by a mere 21 seconds while Jassi Chatthe of Kisumu came in third to seal the podium dash. This was Harry Green’s second time navigating Quentin.
Despite numerous pre-event challenges, Quentin had this to say: “I’m so chuffed that we overcame it all! Thanks to everyone and especially OiLibya Racing team for a challenging but great season!”
Izhar Mirza of Coast Pekee Racing team was indeed the highest placed driver from the Coast.
Navigated by Nairobi based Kavit Dave, Izhar amiably referred to as “Izzy” by friends and spectators drove his Mitsubishi EVO9 machine to fourth overall position and savored being the second highest placed KNRC Division Two driver in the final classification.
Baldev Singh Chager, who had sealed the KNRC diadem in the penultimate Guru Nanak Rally, didn’t compete for a top position as he was test driving an under-powered Porsche 911 in the run up to the 2013
East African Safari Classic Rally. Incidentally, Chager won the Classic Car Cup navigated by the car’s owner Onkar Singh Rai.
Quentin was an earlier pacesetter. He posted the quickest stage time in the 6.19 kilometer Creek stage (C S1). But fears that the race could turn into a cliffhanger evaporated soon enough as cars proceeded to the 30 kilometer Malomani stage.
Quentin’s good start was short-lived when Duncan snatched the lead and clung on to it to the very end of the last stage in CS11 Mazingira stage in Kilifi town.
There were only seven finishers from the coast namely; Izhar, Alex Horsey (10th), Naushad Kara Lota (13th), Hapz Sagoo (23rd), Manmeet Singh Puee “Vicky” (25), Kilifi residents based Janmohammed siblings Abdulatiff and Farzin in 26th whilst Malindi’s deep sea fisherman Rob Hellier finished in 27th position.

FIM CENTRAL AFRICA MOTOCROSS CHALLENGE
SUPEE SOIN TAKES SABBATICAL LEAVE
After imparting some valuable racing experience to the second generation of the Rai family, legendary two times KNRC Navigators’ Champion Supee Soin will be out of action for the better part of next season. Supee who guided the legendary Sarbi Rai to two KNRC championship victories in 1992 and 1993 has been navigating the latter’s son Rajbir- who currently ranks amongst Kenya’s fastest drivers despite his Division 3 affiliation.
Previously, Supee nurtured and navigated Rajbir’s cousin Onkar Rai in his debut event during Guru Nanak Rally 2010. Onkar later became the KNRC Division Two Champion in 2012. This year, Rajbir finished second overall in the KNRC Division 3
Championship behind Jasmeet Chana. In one of his memorable feats, Supee navigated Sarbi to victory in the 1993 edition of the Equator Rally in an Opel Manta 400.The Equator rally then counted towards the African Rally Championship series.
Kenyans deservedly recaptured the FIM Central Africa Motocross Challenge after dethroning last year’s
champions Uganda at Jamhuri Park race track. Dylan Mutahi of Kenya rode his KTM bike with precision to beat compatriot Tai Wahome and Ugandan Waleed Omar to second and third slots in a breathtaking MX50 podium dash. Ethan Nyachae of Kenya clinched the MX65 class ahead of Uganda’s Fortune Ssentamu with Wazir Omar wrapping up the podium tussle in third. Tutu Maina was in imperious form in MX1 as he vanquished hard-charging Ugandans Maxime Van Pee and Arhur Blick Jnr. There was no Ugandan who was entered in the MX2 class which was won by Ivan Guya. Guya riding a KTM four-stroke bike racked-up a rare double when he sealed the National and regional MX2 titles. He beat Apollo Mbuki to second position and attributed his championship feat to hard work.Sameer Anwar brought his bike to 3rd in the MX2 Class.
