LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
J I M D O N OVA N H O N ’ 1 1
Dear Friends of Malden Catholic,
When I had the privilege of taking part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Malden Catholic School for Girls back in March, I shared with those in attendance a bit of wisdom that has been resonating with me over the course of the past year: all real
progress occurs outside of one’s comfort zone.
Although this is an incredibly exciting time in the life of Malden Catholic, one could hardly describe it as being in a “comfort zone!” In the past year, we have successfully completed $7 million dollars of new construction for the academic wing of the School for Girls, introduced cutting-edge curricula, and witnessed an enthusiastic push to attract a talented and diverse Class of 2022. In these efforts,
we have not been guided by what feels “comfortable,” but rather by our Mission of giving today’s young men and women the high-quality Catholic and Xaverian education that has defined us for more than eighty-five years.
At a time when MC is navigating through uncharted waters, it is so gratifying to see such incredible confidence and support shown by all of our benefactors. You have answered the call to support our Mission more powerfully than ever. The Fund for Malden Catholic is at an historic high, with participation rates increasing across all major benefactor demographics: parents, alumni, faculty and staff, trustees, friends of Malden Catholic, and alumnae of Girls Catholic. Your sincere generosity has not only met but exceeded the hope I had last year when I encouraged us to go boldly into the next
phase of our journey, as Lancers always do. We are truly blessed by your support.
We have seen tremendous growth not only in Annual Giving over the past year, but also in another area vitally important to the long-term sustainability of Malden Catholic: Planned Giving through the Theodore James Ryken Society. In this time of great uncertainty about the future of Catholic education, financial support through Planned Giving allows our school to look to the future with great confidence. I extend heartfelt thanks to those new members of the Ryken Society who have joined me in pledging an estate gift to Malden Catholic this year. Because of you, we know and believe that our beloved Xaverian tradition will endure for generations to come.
Whether you are a young alumnus contributing to the Fund for Malden Catholic for the first time or a longtime benefactor who has recently decided to join the Ryken Society, thank you for playing your part in this historic year of giving at Malden Catholic. We are grateful to know that we can count on your support in these exciting times.
Sincerely,
Jim Donovan Hon’11

MALDEN CATHOLIC HAS PLAYED A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR LIVES. WHEN OUR SON WAS IN HIS SENIOR YEAR HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE FOUR CANCER. THE SUPPORT HE AND WE RECEIVED FROM THE SCHOOL WAS SOMETHING WE NEVER FORGOT. WHILE HE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL, EACH DAY, THE DOORS TO HIS ROOM WOULD OPEN AND THERE WAS FATHER WALSH WITH SO MANY STUDENTS TO VISIT AND CHEER HIM UP. IT WAS AMAZING TO SEE AND AS A PARENT, HOW COULD YOU FORGET SOMETHING LIKE THIS? NOW, DENNIS’ TRIPLET SONS WILL BE ATTENDING MALDEN CATHOLIC IN THE FALL AND WE COULD NOT BE PROUDER.”

WHEN I LOOK BACK ON THE FOUR YEARS I SPENT AT MC ON HIGHLAND AVENUE, MY MIND IS FILLED WITH NOTHING BUT PLEASANT MEMORIES. I DEVELOPED MANY FRIENDSHIPS THAT STILL EXIST. I WAS PROVIDED WITH AN EXCELLENT EDUCATION IN A VERY NURTURING ENVIRONMENT. MC PROVIDED ME WITH THE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL SKILLS THAT HAVE ALLOWED ME TO NAVIGATE THE FUTURE WITH CONFIDENCE. I AM VERY MINDFUL OF THE BENEFITS I RECEIVED FROM A XAVERIAN BROTHERS EDUCATION. I AM PLEASED TO BE ABLE TO GIVE SOME SMALL TOKEN BACK TO ASSIST A NEW GENERATION TO ENJOY THESE SAME BENEFITS.”

SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER SOCIETYMalden Catholic’s leadership giving circle, the Saint Francis Xavier Society (SFX) began in 1994 as a way for alumni and friends to promote and celebrate annual unrestricted gifts of $1,000. It started with just four members who contributed a total of $8,250. Today the SFX Society has 167 members who contributed more than $732,442 in FY18.
We are very grateful for the generosity and commitment of the members of the SFX Society, who are invited to a reception at Malden Catholic each fall to be recognized and honored for all that they do to continue the Mission begun by the Xaverian Brothers over eighty-five years ago.

THE FUND FOR MALDEN CATHOLICThe Fund for Malden Catholic consists of critical unrestricted donations that are put to work immediately to help balance the affordability of tuition with the growing cost of providing our students with a robust academic, athletic, co-curricular, spiritual and social program. Our donors show a strong commitment to the Mission of Malden Catholic when they choose to make gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic each year.
We rely on the generosity of those who contribute financially to MC to ensure the sustainability of Xaverian education and provide for the margin of educational excellence that goes beyond the value of the cost of tuition. Unrestricted donations to the Fund for Malden Catholic allow school leadership to use those resources where needed most in areas such as curriculum development, library acquisitions, technology upgrades, and financial aid for our students.
Gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic help us keep our competitive edge and remain one of Greater Boston’s highest-achieving Catholic schools.

DOES YOUR COMPANY HAVE A MATCHING GIFTS PROGRAM?
You can maximize your personal
contributions to Malden Catholic
and increase the impact of your gift
by taking advantage of a company’s
matching gift benefit. You might
be able to double or even triple the
amount of your contribution. Some
companies will also match retirees
and/or spouses.
Check with your company’s human
resources or payroll department to
see whether it offers a matching gift
program, or contact Jean Campbell
at campbellj@maldencatholic.org
and we will check for you.

BOARD DESIGNATED FUNDSCreating a Board Designated Fund ensures that students of Malden Catholic will have the financial aid they need for many generations. An initial gift of $25,000 will allow a person or family to choose to establish a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one. Designated funds are invested and pay out an established percentage of income per year in financial aid; and you may increase the size of the corpus at any time. Thank you to all of you who have chosen this way to make a Malden Catholic education possible for the Lancers of the future.

THE THEODORE JAMES RYKEN SOCIETYIn 2004, Malden Catholic inaugurated the Theodore James Ryken Society. The Society was created to recognize those who have provided for future generations of Malden Catholic students by making gifts through bequests, life income arrangements, or other planned gifts. When you join the Theodore James Ryken Society you demonstrate your commitment to the students who attend Malden Catholic. Your planned gift is an inspiration to future generations and a reminder of the philanthropy that sustains Malden Catholic. By giving back through a bequest or a planned gift, Ryken Society members make the ultimate commitment that truly transcends through time.
Members of the Theodore James Ryken Society have indicated in writing that they have made special provisions for Malden Catholic in their estate plans. In addition, to being a meaningful gift to Malden Catholic “planned giving” helps to reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains and federal estate taxes for the donor. Please check with your financial advisor or accountant for more details on arranging for a planned gift, and the personal benefits associated with that charitable gift.

YOUR LEGACY C AN B EGIN N OW
Patricia A. McWade GC’65 wondered when she entered Girls Catholic High School in 1961 what career she might eventually pursue. A love for the written word eventually led her to study English Literature at Northeastern University, but along the way she began to realize she could make a difference in higher education administration. As president of her GCHS sophomore class, she recognized her leadership abilities as well as her knack for effective communication. She began to put these talents to good use by working in the Financial Aid office at Northeastern University while still a student there. From a low-income family and being the first in her family to attend college, Pat was committed to demystifying the financial aid process for others, something that baff led her and her family during her college years.
Pat would go on to have a successful career as a senior financial aid executive at Harvard University and later Georgetown University, where she currently serves as Dean of Student Financial Aid Services and Associate Vice President for Student Loan Services. As an alumna of both the Immaculate Conception School and Girls Catholic, the lessons of serving others, giving back, creating systems of justice and fairness, and making a difference in the lives of students and families are foundational in her life and in her professional career.
Pat credits her family and the education that she received from the School Sisters of Notre Dame for her success in life and her life’s work. “I always knew my Girls Catholic experience was valuable but did not realize at the time how it would open an opportunity for me to help others like myself navigate and persist in pursuing a bachelor’s and a master’s degree that would result in the perfect job for me, leading a financial aid operation in higher education. I still love coming to work each day and helping others realize their dreams.” A Trustee since 2011, Chair of the school’s Education Committee, and a member of the Enrollment and Audit Committees, Pat has served to provide strong and visionary professional advice, leadership, and guidance to Malden Catholic’s Academic Administrators with the goal of helping students achieve and succeed at even higher levels.
A generous and loyal donor of the school, Pat is a member of the St. Francis Xavier Society and supports the school’s annual Gala event. In addition, she supported the very successful Essential Malden Catholic Campaign with a major gift. This past year, Pat, named Malden Catholic as a beneficiary of a gift through her estate at the rate of $100,000 to establish a Board Designated Fund for tuition assistance.
“I take great pride in being a recipient of a Catholic education at the Immaculate Conception School and Girls Catholic High School. I know that my gift will be put to the best use at Malden Catholic. I want Malden Catholic to remain strong and vibrant and thrive for students and families today and in the future. I see my legacy now as continuing to contribute my time and my financial support to ensure that Malden Catholic both for Girls and for Boys continues to thrive. My hope is that my estate planning gift will ignite a f lame for others like myself to support this fine school for many years to come. The best way that I can make a difference for the future of this great school is through my estate enabling me to provide for students and their families for generations to come.”
LIKE PATRICIA MCWADE GC’65 YOU CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF THE THEODORE JAMES RYKEN SOCIETY BY:

On Friday, September 22, 2017, more that 100 alumni, parents and friends of MC braved harsh weather conditions at Mt. Hood Golf Course in Melrose for the 31st Annual Golf Classic.
Despite a cold wind and heavy rain for most of the day, golfers enjoyed the scramble-format tournament and competed for closest to the pin, longest drive and a $10,000 hole-in-one contest. Mr. Neil Hurley ’66 was the closest to winning the grand prize. His tee shot on the par-3 18th rolled over the edge of the cup, stopping mere inches from the hole.
After a buffet dinner, raff les, and live auction, the winning team of Steve Tarpey ’86, Mark Tarpey ’83, Mike Tarpey ’78, and Devin Tarpey ’10 was recognized.
We are grateful to our sponsors who help make this event affordable for our players.
