It takes a dedicated community

to prepare extraordinary dogs for

all of life’s adventures —

no matter how big or small.

A Y E A R I N R E V I E WCreating Meaningful Connections • Caring, Sharing & Inspiring • Living Life More Fully

• Blindness is increasing worldwide, elevating the need for guidedogs. The George T. Walker Fundof the Lehigh Valley CommunityFoundation awarded us a multi-year $500,000 grant, launchingour capacity expansion plan andmeeting the increased demand.Over the next three years we willaccomplish this by building uponthe expertise and experience of ourguide dog instructors and investingin facilities allowing us to train 175guide dogs a year.

• In recognition of the 25thAnniversary of the Americans withDisabilities Act, JPMorgan Chaseinvited Guiding Eyes to participatein “One Firm, Many Voices:Accessibility Matters,” a three-day interactive event celebratingJPMC’s longstanding commitment

to embracing an inclusive work environment. Blindfolded employees experienced vision loss while navigating their work space with a dog in harness.

• Our mission is trending! CBS ThisMorning, TODAY.com, People.com,PeoplePets.com, Competitor.com,Observer.com, Self, and Runner’sWorld are a few of the nationalmedia outlets that reported on ourRunning Guides Pilot Program. OnNBC’s TODAY show, Wrangler, ayellow Lab puppy, engaged viewersas they learned how volunteerraisers help prepare puppies forguide dog training. His many fans, who are dedicated to supporting hisability to make a difference, include212,000 Instagram followers.

• Guiding Eyes launched RunningGuides Fueled by Gatorade.

The visually impaired running community asked if a guide dog could be trained to safely guide while running. Our instructors met the challenge, helping athletes with vision loss to navigate at a faster pace with specially trained guide dogs that love to run. MIT developed a prototype harness handle and Ruffwear designed a comfortable harness for our athletic dogs.

• We held the Grand Re-Openingof our expanded, state-of-the artCanine Development Center. Thestimulating environment and lovingsupport of a puppy’s physical andcognitive needs will strengthenthe human-animal bond. Thetransformative relationship betweenour students and our exceptionaldogs changes lives.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind makes a profound and immediate difference in people’s lives. We are dedicated to creating and supporting life-changing connections between people and exceptional dogs.

We all know how powerful the connection between a dog and a person can be. With your support we build those meaningful relationships, giving people who are blind and visually impaired independence, freedom, and confidence.

At Guiding Eyes we create individual programs for every person who comes through our doors, matching each student to the perfect dog. The ensuing success helps set the standard for guide dog schools around the world. This year we created 153 life-changing connections and supported over 1,000 active guide dog teams. We’re proud to make a difference in the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired.

In 2015 we completed the renovation of a state-of-the-art building for breeding, whelping, and puppyhood. The Canine Development Center provides a loving environment for the early socialization of future guide dogs by nurturing the human-animal connection.

We also launched Running Guides Fueled by Gatorade. This initiative, the first of its kind, teams visually impaired runners with dogs who are chosen for their endurance. Running guides receive guide dog training, then learn to safely navigate at higher speeds, always ending each run with well-deserved recreation and relaxation.

Every student receives instruction tailored to their individual pace and lifestyle. After graduation our alumni receive in-home visits and follow-up assistance. The cost to raise, train, match, and support each guide dog team requires $50,000 in generous donations. All services are provided at no charge to our students and graduates, demanding careful stewardship of every donor dollar.

With great pride we thank our Board of Directors--devoted volunteers who have diligently focused on the organization’s mission, financial stability and long-term sustainability. This year Standard & Poor’s Rating Services assigned us its very high “A-” issuer credit rating, stating, “Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s balance sheet indicators continue to be strong....The demand for its services and its reputation remain impressive.”

These are dynamic and purposeful times for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. We thank you for your connection to our charitable mission and ask you to support our important work together in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Wendy Aglietti Thomas A. PanekChair, Board of Directors President and Chief Executive Officer

Shawn Cheshire served in the United States Army for eight years as a helicopter armament specialist. Returning home, she worked as an EMT until an accident on the job left her with a traumatic brain injury. Slowly her vision declined until she was totally blind.

Shawn became depressed and too fearful to leave the house for weeks. But as a single mom of two girls she had to find a way “to adapt to this new darkness surrounding me.”

Someone at the Veteran’s Administration suggested running, which helped Shawn find her way out of the darkness. Today she’s a world-class professional athlete. Her specialties include running, cross-country skiing, and marksmanship. In 2016 Shawn will compete in tandem bike racing at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.

Pleased with her athletic achievements, Shawn then sought to depend less on family and friends. Guiding Eyes for the Blind traveled to Shawn’s home in upstate New York to home-train her and Kiara, her first Guiding Eyes guide dog. The two will explore the world together as Shawn continues to pursue her dreams. She says of her incredible journey, “I stare fear in the face.”

Guiding Heroes offers customized follow-up services to our students and graduates who are veterans, whether they have special needs, require home training, or want to return to college. Our staff, often accompanied by our graduates who served in the military, works with veterans organizations to educate servicemen and servicewomen with vision loss about the benefits that come from having a Guiding Eyes guide dog.

Joey and GunnerSights on College

The summer before his senior year of high school, Joey came to Guiding Eyes so he and Gunner would have time together before heading off to college where Joey studies musical composition. During his time at Guiding Eyes, Joey forged lasting friendships with his classmates who described his enthusiasm as “contagious.”

At graduation he performed an original piano composition inspiring a captive audience of fellow graduates, volunteers, donors, and staff.

In addition to being a gifted musician, Joey is president of a high-ranking debate team and an avid athlete. Having Gunner is making it easier for him to realize his dreams.

For young people with vision loss, like Joey, partnering witha professionally trained Guiding Eyes dog is a pivotal moment which holds great promise. In recognition of this important transition Guiding Eyes offers Sights on College, a highly personalized training program which includes navigatinga college campus.

Did you know? When you meet a person who is blind for the first time:

• It is courteous to shake hands and introduce yourself by name. A cordial handshake or “hello” with your name and then a good-bye substitutes for a friendly smile.

• Talk directly to the person in a normal tone of voice, almost like talking on the telephone, because the person on the other end cannot see you.

• Don’t worry about using descriptive words which refer to sight, such as “Nice to see you” or “It looks like the weather will be nice today.”

• When you leave, either quietly inform them you are leaving or say, “Tom, it was nice speaking with you. I’m leaving now.” This prevents the person who is blind or visually impaired from speaking to an empty space.

• Most important, never pet a service dog. Always ask before touching a guide dog. Distracting a guide dog is a lot like distracting a driver in a car and can endanger the individual relying on a dog for mobility and safety.

Heidi and ArubaSpecial Needs

The first time Heidi walked into her new office she realized her mobility skills needed extra attention. Navigating inside her home wasn’t a problem, but in an unfamiliar work setting she felt distracted and untethered, “like I was hanging out in space.”

Heidi’s balance issues were attributed to premature birth and a diagnosis of Meniere’s disease, an inner ear disorder. When Heidi learned about Guiding Eyes’ Special Needs Program she felt a great sense of relief and building excitement. Despite her new challenges, the possibilities presented by a guide dog helped her feel optimistic.

This past summer we partnered Heidi with Aruba, a female yellow Lab that received additional training to develop the skills necessary to accommodate Heidi’s specific needs. Through this first-of-its-kind program Guiding Eyes has been partnering guide dogs for more than 20 years with people who are blind and who have physical or health-related challenges such as severe arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cerebral palsy, or epilepsy. We are also one of the few guide dog schools to accept people who are DeafBlind.

“For the first time in a long time,” says Heidi, “I can walk into work proudly knowing I will not run into the wall or get myself turned around due to my equilibrium and balance issues. As a professional, I can finally feel as though I am representing the population of people who are visually impaired in the way I want to. Guiding Eyes has given me a true blessing in Aruba.”

Joan and HamptonSeniors

Seven Guiding Eyes dogs have given Joan the confidence to live a life of adventure and fulfillment. She has climbed to the top of Mt. McKinley, the first woman who is blind to do so. She has carried the Olympic Torch, sped down mountains on skis, and shared tandem bicycles while touring villages in England.

At 67, Joan returned to Guiding Eyes for Hampton, a male yellow Labrador. Much has changed since she received her first guide dog, but the most important things—her love of discovery and family—have remained the same.

Over the last seven years nearly 30 percent of Guiding Eyes graduates have been seniors, and this figure continues to climb. The demand for our services is increasing as the number of Americans at risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the United States, is growing. Our outreach efforts aim to reach seniors with vision loss who could benefit from partnering with one of our guide dogs.

Joan has had guide dogs for most of her life, but some of our seniors are receiving their first dog in their 80s. Guiding Eyes is committed to helping seniors, no matter their age, find new confidence to travel safely, navigate easily, and connect with others and the world around them.

Other Adventures Guiding Eyes dogs are bred to become guide dogs for people who are visually impaired. Some dogs let us know along the way that they are destined for different adventures. These dogs are released from our guide dog program but have great potential to be successful in other settings. We are proud of our affiliations with local, state, and federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) which train and place dogs for detection work. In addition, we are affiliated with organizations such as National Education for Assistance Dogs Services (NEADS) and collaborate with many other guide dog schools as each school serves a slightly different population.

The freedom to go wherever she wants means the most to Joan. “Life with my guide dog is about choices,” she says. “I can choose to walk to the city park or hike a trail in the Allegheny National Forest. I can go to the grocery store, the coffee shop, and my church. I’m grateful to Guiding Eyes and those who have worked diligently to bring me seven magnificent guide dogs.”

Innovation in 2015 meant pushing boundaries, doing things that had never been done before, and blazing new trails. Guiding Eyes set out to meet the challenge of training a guide dog to navigate obstacles at a faster pace, with the ultimate objective of safely guiding a visually impaired runner. A German Shepherd named Klinger was matched with Richard Hunter, a former United States Marine veteran, in early August 2015. During the three-week training program Richard and Klinger worked together on campus at the Guiding Eyes Training Center to learn how to travel safely as a team.

The idea for this pioneering program arose from increasing demand among the community of visually-impaired runners. We conducted a focus group to assess this need and the results were overwhelmingly in favor of creating a pilot program. Demand was particularly high among veterans who have a strong desire to remain physically fit after service. Sighted guides are often used to keep runners with vision loss safe, but it can be difficult due to scheduling and other conflicts to rely on others to be available for training runs, or to run for the sheer love of it. With a running guide dog, people with vision loss can enjoy the freedom of running independently with their guide dogs whenever they choose.

Richard Hunter, a hero to the community of runners who are visually impaired, was an ideal first graduate. When the team successfully completed their training at Guiding Eyes in late August they returned home to California. With the help of Guiding Eyes instructors, Ben Cawley and Jolene Hollister, they were able to get in three to four exercise routes per week. Klinger runs up to seven miles at a time and helped Richard train for the California International Marathon. The team’s continued success has launched the Running Guides Pilot Program into its next phase during which Guiding Eyes training staff developed a set of parameters to evaluate existing teams for running potential.

Autism Support Dog Program: Making Life-Changing Connections with Extraordinary DogsGuiding Eyes dogs who are not suited for guide dog work can also change the lives of children on the autism spectrum, and their families, through our Autism Support Dog Program. This program has served more than 70 children since it began in 2008. Parents are reporting milestones that were once difficult to imagine. A Guiding Eyes support dog in the family helps children break down social barriers, display greater confidence, engage with their siblings, and enjoy the companionship and love of the dog.

Phyllis Milton and the Grand Re-Opening of the Canine Development Center The year 2015 marked a great milestone in Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s history with the Grand Re-Opening of the newly renovated Canine Development Center in September. The vision for a space which supports our groundbreaking work in breeding and early socialization is now a reality, due in part to Phyllis Milton who gave the largest gift from an individual toward the renovation. Phyllis was present that beautiful fall day to help cut the ribbon, thereby introducing the new Center and honoring the legacy of her late husband. Arthur Milton’s name appears proudly on the new building.

Mary Jo, a member of the Pathfinder Society and monthly donor, has been a supporter of our work for two decades. An avid dog lover, she appreciates that Guiding Eyes dogs provide their partners with companionship and enable them to go places and enjoy experiences that might not otherwise be possible. Mary Jo, a former U.S. Navy Captain, served as a nurse for over 26 years. Active in retirement, she volunteers as a docent at Middleton Place in Charleston, South Carolina, does pet therapy with Gracie, and takes long walks in the neighborhood with her dogs.12
