The event was separate in three blocks. First, the teenagers attended a one day lectures designed by chapter members. The students got familiarized with basic concepts on optics; its historical background and how all this knowledge contributes to cameras build up.
Second, they received instructions about the pictures aesthetics and how this could communicate feeling, ideas or even criticisms. Once they had this information, we gave them conventional cameras in order to materialize all things learned.
The third part was a photo exhibition where the teenagers shared the experiences taking pictures with their mates, showed their
best pics and participated in a contest.
The Nuevo Latir directives allow us to use the school installations and a few teachers were interested of being part of the activity too. We ask for support in a recognize store in our city: MundoColor. The owner of the store was quite enthusiastic about our project, and gave us a significant discount on the printing price of the photos.
Scenes of the Optics Lectures. Thirty five teenagers were selected by their teachers and the chapter in order to work with the most interested youth.
In the second block of the activity we included experimental experiences where the student saw materialized the concepts mentioned on lectures. These experiments had the purpose of familiarize the youth in concepts like: polarizations of light, geometric optics (kinds of lens and its effects), sets of lens, light spectra (color), kinds of cameras, photo printing process, wave properties of light, etc. Also we discussed some particular areas were optics is applied: astronomy, industry and devices in common life.
This pedagogical activity was also a professional challenge to each member of the chapter. Until that day, majority of us had never work with student in a high school, and we didn’t know the appropriate way to approximate and motivate teenagers in science. But the best of this experience was that we had to work as a team to improve our abilities to carry out the program. Finally our method was a success! All students were enthusiastic about the lectures and experiments, they sought each member with questions and doubts about everything, and of course we were prepared to help them.
Scenes of the experiments session. Here is Camilo and Victor explaining the lens effect.
While the teenagers enjoyed the snack we discussed with them the dynamics of ours projects and the intentions we have when we chose communities economically disadvantaged. This conversation was quite productive and we had the chance to let them know our motivation and our vision about the education in science they deserve.
Conventional cameras were given to the students. It Was surprising for us to see how this teenagers were so excited and optimistic about the things they could shot with carmeras. As consequence of our social interest, we ask them to took only pictures with a special meaning, and to communicate with images their feeling or thoughts about specific situations on their comunities.
Finally, we organized an exhibition where students could share the learned stuffs and took part in a photo contest. There were four winners for the contest, but each teen recieved an attendance certification. The city goverment invited all of them to submit their pictures to the historical archive of the city.

Details of planned activities for the future: This year, as main activity, we'll make a contribution to the 50th anniversary celebration of the physics department. We’ll bring the SPIE and OSA visiting lecture, will make an optics and photonics exhibition and will recruit new members, all this in an activity of two days.
Next year we will hold the first CUVO symposia. The Idea is to bring technical conferences and create a space where Colombian chapters can share their experiences as group and also members can present their undergraduate works as poster or short talks. This activity has already begun to be organized and the idea is to train ourselves for one day host the IONS Lationoamerica in our city.
