ANIMATOR

An Animator creates the illusion ofmotion thru drawings and movement ofimages to convey a meaning or a story. TheAnimator heavily relies on his/her artisticability, although there is a growing need tobe familiar with technical computerpackages (animation software). Animatorswork in 2D animations (such as cartoons),3D model making animation, or computergenerated animation.

Task

Create storyboards that visualize thescript and narrative;Build up detailed frame-by-framevisuals with accuracy, designs modelsfrom a wide range of materials frommodelling clay, plaster, oil paints,water colors and to acrylic asbackground, sets, characters, objectsin the animation environment;Develop the timing and pace of acharacter or object’s movementsduring the animatic and ensure theyfollow the soundtrack and audiorequirements;

Basic Educational and TrainingRequirements

Even a high school graduate can be anAnimator provided he/she has the artisticability to sketch/draw and has goodimagination. This is what they call the Entry-level Animator. However, to be a KeyAnimator, certain trainings on the followingsubject matters will be useful: graphicdesign/illustration, 2-D and 3-D design, artand design, spatial design, film and video,multimedia and computer aided design.Some of these tranings are offered by someanimation companies to their entry levelAnimators.

Skills and Competencies

Artistic ability to sketch/ draw;Good imagination;

Knowledgeable in artisitc design/illustration, 2D & 3D design art anddesign, spatial de sign, film andvideo, multimedia and computeraided design;Familiar in the use of technicalsoftware (Flash, 3D studio max, Maya,Lightwave, Softimage and Cinema4D).

Physical Attributes and Characteristics

Imaginative and patient;Have an eye for details;Have excellent attitude (i.e. flexible,patient, conscientious, resourceful,teamworker, organized anddisciplined).

LocalP8,000-12,000 per month (entry levelanimator)P15,000-25,000 per month (keyanimator)

Overseas$58,030 per anum or $4,836 permonth (entry level animator)$64,000 per anum or $5,333 permonth (key animator)

Prospects for Career AdvancementAn Animator with 2-3 years experience

can qualify for the position of Key Animatorafter undergoing additional training in anadvanced course. He/She must also possesssupervisory, coaching and leadership skills.

Employment OpportunitiesSome 20,960 new jobs will be made

available for animators over the period2007-2010, or an average of 5,240 jobopenings a year
