What is K-POP?

Korean pop music

There are many different popular styles of Korean music, though it is often divided into two main sections.

The cuter, “girlier” / “pretty boy” style…

And the more American, hip-hop inspired style.

Firstly, let’s take a look at the more “cutesy” style.

• SNSD, or Girls’ Generation• Group dances• “Aegyo”• Coordinated outfits• Light-hearted lyrics

Next, let’s look closer at the second, hip-hop influenced style.

• Big Bang• Beat-focused• Unusual music videos, less focused on appearance• Less structured dancing• Varied lyrics

There is also a smaller (but very popular) section of K-pop that focuses on humor.

This comedic style includes:

• Fun, light-hearted lyrics• Humorous dancing• Wacky outfits• Memorable music videos

A perfect example of this sub-section of K-pop is, of course, Gangnam Style.
