… better?
Predetermine window sizes, and have frames
sized to match, Higher in shower
Termite-proof roof framing lumber before
construction; Is there a better alternative to
Carboline (e.g.; naturally termite-proof wood
(cashier?), less harsh chemicals?)
Improved Doors;
o Simpler door design; straight clean
joinery, limited ornamentation
o Try using double-hung door framing?
o Single group to complete door
frames, fabrication, and hanging
Longer lifespan soffit material, better
venting? Use mesh instead.
Build a gazebo for each cluster?
Larger bathrooms, smaller bedrooms
Smaller/higher windows in bedrooms
Eavestroughs for better drainage control?
Deeper closets?
Switches in correct locations
Consider alternate woods (e.g. Kashia for
doorframes)
Skylights for the large homes (onduline)
Precast components on-site (lintels), then
install on home.
Consider orientation of home with respect to
surrounding elements ( backyard, carpark,
other homes)
… more affordable?
Alternative roofing material? (Fiber polymer,
long span zinc?)
Further spacing between trusses (less wood
required)
Stained concrete floors instead of tile?
Smaller windows? Having length shorter than 7’
for lumber will reduce waste lumber
dramatically
Install windows without wood framing?
Pricing of concrete block vs. compressed earth?
Less/No trim carpentry?
Concrete kitchen cabinetry?
Lower per-house cost if we had our own
hydroform machine?
By leveling the ground before pouring the
foundations, we will need to have high
foundations on one side.
Investigate possibility of reengineering homes
with a single ring being?
Remove unnecessary things, such as:
Wood around the windows
Plastering the inside of brick walls ( especially
where the wall will be compiled)
Timing of workflow: for example,
electricity/piping installed before wall is finished
(avoid punching holes)
Consider selling homes with the lower level of
finish.
… greener?
Passive cooling design improvements;
o Vented / cold roof design?
o Longer overhangs for better
window shading (zinc should
also extend 3” beyond fascia to
prevent dripback causing rot
later)
o Increased shade from trees
Grey water recycling (sink to toilet
reservoir reuse?)
Provide Point-of-use and/or solar water
heaters as an add-on option?
How can we make the houses…
No resources
to follow-
through!

Quality Design Standards
• Have tried to convey the concept that simpler designs, with greater accuracy can result in a higher quality product.
• “Less can be more!”
Applying permaculture techniques at Ecohomes
Swale construction
•Why: reduces water speed, therefore reduces erosion. Moves water away from homes and road towards ditches.
•How: Follow the topo lines. Ideally, place at property line if possible. Mound soil on downhill side. Plant grasses and other plants to hold in place. Lemon grass and Bamboo were interplanted on this swale to create a hedge that will stabilize the swale and create privacy between the homes. Carpet grass was also planted.
Where to plant:
•Around ditches, ponds
•Near roof drip line
•Low-lying areas where water collects, intermittent
ponds
•Shade, such as north side of homes, under trees
(will dry out quicker in sun)
