My young friends,
I am pleased to present you the 200th issue of Tinkle. Sn the very first issue of Tinkle, I had told you a story of Ramu and Shamu, the five-year- old twins. They hear the young ones of a crow repeating only one word. ‘ Caw and kittens saying only one word, ‘ Meow ’. They ask their Daddy, “Why did you teach us so many words? Now we have to go to school and learn so many things. If you had taught us only one word, we too would have repeated only one word like ‘ Caw ’ or ‘ Meow .’”
Over the years, Ramu and Shamu have learnt a lot by asking questions like, “Who? What? How? When? Where? Why?” Of course it was not easy for either their teachers or their parents to answer their questions.
Once after teaching the children how to spell CAT, RAT and BAT, the teacher rubbed off the words on the blackboard and asked, “Any quest¬
ions?” Ramu got up and asked, “Miss,
could you tell where all those words have gone? Into the blackboard? Or into the duster?”
Early one morning, Ramu asked his father, “Now where has all the black gone and hidden?”
“You mean the dark, Ramu,” said daddy. But he could not answer Ramu’s question not because he did not know the answer, but he found it difficult to explain in words that Ramu could understand.
We have recently started the column, “Tinkle tells you why”. We have already received over 1,500 questions. Certainly it is not possib¬ le to answer all of them. But all those who have asked questions will be
' sent stickers and book-labels. There¬ fore, do keep sending questions.
We select questions which would interest a majority of our readers and which can be explained in a few words.
Affectionately yours,
V

STOP breathing!
What causes hiccups? Shaiiesh Agarwal, 113/8 Sonal Apartments, J.P.Nagar, Road No.2,
Goregaon (East), Bombay-400 063
During normal breathing, the diaphragm, which separates the chest (thorax) from the stomach (abdomen) moves up and down regularly and rhythmically. The contraction and moving down of the diaphragm allows more air to come into the thorax as we breathe in. When the diaphragm moves up, the air is pushed out as we breathe out. At times however, the diaphragm contracts suddenly. Air from outside rushes into the lungs just as the upper end of the windpipe is about to close. This causes a ‘hie5 or ‘puck5 sound.
The cause for the sudden contraction of the diaphragm can be spicy food, excessive intake of alcohol, or even mental tension. Although a wide variety of cures are suggested, drinking a glass of water or deep breathing generally stops the hiccups. '
Why does a flame rise upward? Apoorva Sharma, A/2 Deep Sagar, Bank of Baroda Society, Andheri (East), Bombay-400 069.
A burning fire is the process by which a substance combines with oxygen of the air producing light and heat.
A flame is the zone giving out heat and light and is filled with hot gases. The hot gases of a flame are thinner or less dense than the surrounding air and therefore, always rise up. This is why the flame of a matchstick always points upwards.
The natural position of aflame is vertical with its tip on top.
.
How do spaceships re-enter the earth’s atmosphere without burning up like meteorites? Anil Kumar, 8/10 Norton Road, Mandaveli, Madras-600 028.
A spacecraft returning to earth is subjected to extremely high temperatures because of the heat generated by its friction with the earth’s atmosphere.
A spacecraft is provided with a heat shield to protect it during re-entry. The heat shield is made of specially formulated plastic material which melts, vaporizes and carries away the boundary layer heat. Insulation behind the heat shield keeps the interior of the spacecraft at a constant tolerable level.
Without its heat shield, the spacecraft would indeed disintegrate into a long white trail of melting matter, as meteorites do when they plunge through the , earth’s atmosphere. / SHIKAR!
'SHAMBU ALWAYS)! HAS HIS HEAT
SH1ELP 0N„
Do dogs dream? Apurva Patel, 51, Utpal, 3rd Road, Juhu Scheme, Vile Parle, Bombay-400 056.
When we see our pet dog twitching his nose and moving about while asleep, we say he is dreaming of catching cats and rats. But we cannot conclusively prove whether or not dogs dream, Scientists have observed, through the study of human volunteers that dreams mostly occur during the state of sleep when there is rapid eye movement (REM) under closed lids and a change in brain waves.
This state of sleep has also been reported for all mammals studied e.g. monkeys, dogs, cats, rats, elephants, shrews and opossums. We must remember, however, that though man resembles animals in many ways, the brain and senses of each species is evolved differently. Animals perceive the world in a
different way than we do. We do not know therefore whether dogs have dreams or vision as we do.
When the earth revolves around the sun.
Why does a diamond sparkle? Pooja Sharma, 95, C.G.S. Colony, Wadala West) Bombay-400 031
its hardness and brilliance are the two main characteristics of a diamond, in the natural state, when it is mined, the diamond may have a rather dull appearance. Expert workers cut the natural diamond with special tools so that it acquires many facets or“little faces”.There are many ways in which a diamond can be symmetrically cut-each with a special name - the marquis cut, the emerald cut etcJThe most common is the brilliant cut with 58 facets (33 above and 25 below)
Because of a special property of diamond (a high refractive index of 2.4 compared to 1.4. of glass) and the multiple facets, the light entering a diamond is bent several times inside, before it emerges out. This makes a diamond seem to glow from inside and sparkle and flash with tiny bursts of colour.
why don’t we fall off? Munish Kumar Sharma, 169/1 North Mabavir Delhi Road, Meerut-250 002.
With the earth spinning about on its axis and revolving around the sun, it does seem strange that people on earth are not tossed about or pushed off the surface. In fact we do not even feel the earth moving. This is because we go along the surface as it moves and so do the objects and the air that surrounds us. It is the gravitational force of the earth that holds everything down. It is one of the basic facts of the universe (discovered first by Newton) that all objects pull one another. The strength of this attraction depends upon the distance between the objects and the amount of matter or mass. Objects with a larger mass have a greater power of attraction than objects of a smaller mass. The earth with its enormous mass attracts all objects which are less massive.
All objects on the surface of the earth, including you, me and the sea, are pulled towards the centre of the earth by its gravitational force and therefore do not get pushed off.
