Paint over the leaky spots; then take apiece of stout Manila paper, or a pieceof common cotton cloth, paint it wellonboth sides; lay it over the first coat, giv-in- g
the whole a final coat, and therewill be no more leak there. Or If thewhole gutter is bad, make it clean anddry, and apply a paste of P. & B. Paintuud Portland Cement.

That the Monowai failed to take
mail from this pott is little less than1 mlnmitv. livery oue
most decolv deplores the fact. Capt.
Carey has assumed a stupendousresponsibility. The reports that
will be in circulation in the Statescannot but be vastly exaggeratedThev cannot but work great harmto Hawaii. The anxiety of the
American friends and relatives of
Island people will be like the strainof those having loved ones aboard a
missing ship.So serious is this phase of the
prevailing excitement and unrestregarded that the dispatcli ot anIsland steamer to the Coast withnews has been seriously suggested
MISINFORMATION.
It is now estimated that the
sugar beet crop near Chino, Cali-
fornia, will be about 90,000 tons. This is considerably over one-hal- f
of the annual product of theseislands, and a large increase over
the product of the last year in
California. Editorial in today's'Tiser.
After launching this wad of mis-
information the morning paperproceeds to dissertate gravely on themenance of beet sugar to the caneindustry of the Islands.
The 'Tiser ought to apologize andthen suspend itself four years. Suchrank error on the part of a paperpublished in a sugar country is
simply unexcusable. It would be
supposed that newspapers herewould have at hand official datathat controvert such an absurdityas the 'Tiser has perpetrated. One
knowing the first thing about sugarwould know better than to acceptthe paragraph quoted.
There are in the United Statesbut six beet sugar refineries threein California, one in Utah and twoin Nebraska. The whole beetsugar output of the United Statesfor the campaign just ended wasnot the quarter of 90,000 tons. Ourofficial figures credit Chtno, withonly 4,736 tons, Watsonville with8,773 and Alvarado (estimated)3,296, making the total for all of
California, including Chine, but16,805 tons. The refineries atIehi, Utah and Norfolk and GrandIsland, Neb., will not go beyond
3,000 tons, making the total for
the United States not above 20,000tons.
Hawaii need not fear that beetsucar in the United States willsupersede cane sugar just yet.
Burn the old fishmarket.
In case of doubt call a doctor.
An increased church attendanceis predicted.
Tim cholera is only making a
bluff at Honolulu.
The rumor monger is in his ele
ment. Don't heed him.
Now they say Ambassadoris .Mr. Cleveland's choice for
the Democratic presidential nomination.
Sweden makes the claim that itis ahead of even Hawaii in tele'
phone service. Service is hadthere for $6 a year, and thehies are about to combine the statetelephone and state telegraph
Is IT necessary, is it creditable,to longer hold Liliuokalani a prison-
er in the Executive Building? Sheis' now simply a citizen of the Re-
public undergoing a punishmentthat is of neither purpose nor utility. On parole at WashingtonPlace she could easily be brought
, up with a short turn at the first' show of disregard of terms of the
parole.
Mr. Jos. Marsdbn makes a
suRcestioa that it will be well toadopt in case the cholera holds on
' and spreads. He saw this m Lon' don. In each of the small districts
' there was established temporarily a; small apothecary shop from which
was dispensed on the instant' mixture for prevention and cure
previously endorsed. The attendants at these places need not be
physicians. The remedy handedout by them is to be used pendingthe arrival of a professional medicalman.
Tub old question of "carrierpigeons for sea service" is revived.A correspondent of an Americanpaper insists that gulls, which aremore powerful birds than pigeons, might be efficiently trained and
' used to much greater distances thanare practicable with the latter In
,a new book, "The Mutineers of theBounty and Pitcairnlsland," is givenan instance of the practical useof gulls as carriers over a considerstretch of water, This little e,
by the way, has severalkiudly mentions of Honolulu. Anspecial acknowledgement is made
of the thoughtful favors of the late"Father" Damon.
August u, 1S95.
A book ofMark Twain's thatis seldom mentioned is "iiiuGolden Ago." It was writtenin collaboration with ClmrloH
Dudley Warner and is hymany regarded as one of thevery best works of tho lan
guage. The play of "Col. Sellers" in which the actor John T.llaymuud made such a greatsuccess, was taken from "ThoGolden Age." Perhaps thepublic has thought there waslittlo in tho book besides Col.Sellers. This is a great mis
take. Col. Sellers is merelyone of a score of characters. The real fuature is its story ofWashington life. Half of thebest sketches on lobbying and j
the workings of the depart-- jnionts of the government ofthe United States are cribbedfrom "The Golden Age."Mark Twain is a living cxam- -
plar of tho truism that fow oftho good writers have anybusiness ability. Ho becamea partner m a big publishinghouse and all hands mademoney oil' his work. The com-
pany brought out the Grantmemoirs and thought it had adiamond field with a free mill-
ing gold quartz quarry on theside. The memoirs of Shermanand Sheridan did not take atall and the company failed. Inthe general wreck the claimswore lodged against MarkTwain and he was shorn like asheep by machinery. Tho permanent financial successes oflife are not a great many,
lliis is probably because somany of them fail to figurethat there is really such a thingas a money market.
We have wheels to burn asChiminio Fadden would say
By constant writing andpleading we have convinced theMonarch people that we mtisthavo more wheels and our orders must bo filled in full, so asto enable us to supply the de-
mand for these celebratedwheels. We have always runout long before the next ship-
ment arrived and it is ovenhard to convince a prospectivebuyer that we do not like tosell the last sample we haveand induce hun to wait a fow
days for the arrival of more. When people want a Monarchthey want it bad must haveit at once. Now wo think wehavo enough of all kinds tocarry us along until tho nextshipment. The manufacturerscan not turn wheels out fastenough to supply tho demandand try to satisfy all agents bysending them all a few,
but thoy have needed oururgent demand and sent ourfull order.
Wo have, besides a lot of theNo. 9 and No. 10, some $90.00ladies wheels, which wo havebeen asked for so often.
The racing fraternity cannow inspect tho merits of thoMonarch 18 lb. racing machine,
Wo havo two and wo want alltho boys to come in and talkabout them. You know wohave said our 390.00 Monarchwas jnst as good as tho higl:priced wheel, only not so finelyfinished it is just tho samematerial, put together in thosame careful manner, and willstand as much stain and wear.

OF INTEREST TO WOMEN.
A Uiul Ufa Hot. m Cook. Falllsc Id oikWomen. Club., Etc
A certain newspaper woman In NewYork leads a kind of dual life. To herjournalistic associates she is of thehardest working reporters on the staff, laboring jnst as many hoars as any ofthe men. To another set sho is a singerin the chnrch choir, industriously pur-
suing a musical education. How shofinds time to take lessons practicegovernl hours a day is a sort of miracle. But she is fitting herself fortheoperatiostage and intends to get them The oddpart of it is that none of her musicalfriends knows she is a reporter, and onlyone of two ot the men on the staff everheard that she could sing. Ilero is an-
other woman who can keep a secret"Why take ourselves so sorlouslyl"
protested a pretty woman at a recentgathering when the conversation hadrun into thonghtful channels. "Oh, jnstfor a change, "answered another. "Mostof tho time we take ourselves so frivo-lously. "
A samplo of tho new woman in theart world is Mrs. Katharine AllmondHnlbert, who spends most of her time Inthe Berkshire hills, puts on a short bluesorgo gown, tramps through all kinds ofweather, carries her own eabol, stooland sketching materials, paints whenit's cold enough to froezo yon andthinks nothing ot walking six miles ona stretch.
A recent school examination in NewYork of pupils trained in the culinaryart disclosed tho fact that tho boys weremuch better cooks than the glrli Evi-
dently some of these boys ore ambitionsto become chefs and gather in a salaryabout equal to that of the president ofthe United States. Perhaps the lack ofenthusiasm among the girls was becausethey regard that they 'would havo to boa cook for somo man with no salary atalL Another reason why thero have beenso many poor cooks among women isthat for centuries nearly all women havebeen obliged to bo couks whether theyliked it or not It nearly every manwho set up housekeeping had beenobliged to inako all the windows auddoors in his houso aud keep on makingwindows doors every day beforo hewent to the office, there would be justas many poor carpenters among men asthero ore cooks among women. Cooks, like poots, aro born, not made. Whenyon like to do a thing, you do it welLNo wonder women do some things in apoor, slipshod manner. They've been solong forced to these tasks when thoy hadno heart inthem. One of the great mas-ters of art was intended by his parentsfor a pastry cook, another for a weavernnd another for a keeper of sheep. Batthese boys had tho courage to rebelagainst authority and do the thing forwhich they wero born. Tho girls whowanted to run away never dared,
tho world in thoso days wouldhave promptly taken them by the earand thumped them back In their places.By all moans let the boys who worebom to bo chefs cook and don't Im-agine every girl must make bread anymore than she must make her own shoes.
Bow fast our idols aro falling I WillDe Barras succeed in pulling down fromher pedestal the gentle JosephineT Well,it she was no better than she ought to be,Barras certainly was a great deal worse. He may ultimately succeed in buryinghimself In the ruins.
Mine. Blano thinks it Impossible forwomen's clubs in France to be the suc-cess they are in country. 8ho says I
"No gathering of women in Francocould leave the same animation or wouldtake sucli pains to be agreeable." Thefair Gaul needs the presence ot men tomake her entertaining. No observationof this clear headed writer seems to beof more value than this. It indicatesone of the advanced steps ot our newworld civilization over the old. Whoawomen give of their best to other wom-en, U is indeed a sign ot solid progress.

THE HAWAIIAN FRIDAY AUGUST 1895.
Consul-Gener- Mills went out tothe steamer, which was lying out-
side at anchor. A confe.encc washad with Captain Carey. He toldthe visitors that after looking overthe regulations he had found thatit would be Impossible for him totake a mail even though it wasfumigated. He felt that it wouldbe detrimental to both ship andpassengers. Before allowing hisvisitors to leave Captain Carey ex-pressed his rep-ret-. addiiHr that hehad made a thorough inspection ofthe regulations and was satishcuhe was acting for the welfare of all.
Everyone about town was ter-ribly disappointed upon tearingthat mall was refused. That itwould be taken had been announcedby Capt. Carey, but this was beforehe read up. The mail for the Mon-
owai had been thoroughly fum-igated.
TRAVELERS.
A lady tourist in an uptown storethis morning was particularlywrathy when she heard that nopassengers would be taken. "Myhusband's business just requireshis preseuce in San Francisco," shesaid, stamping her dainty feet,"and we only made up our mindsto stay in Honolulu till this steam-er. About twenty people at theHotel are all keen to get away onthis steamer." It was truly a dis-
appointed crowd that gatheredabout the Hotel verandas when theintelligence arrived that no onecould depart from here.

The collar is inado stiffand is of whito satin. It is removable.however, so that the wearer cau lio downif she so desires without injuring hercollar or her own comfort
A tea jacket was shown mo that Ithink worthy of a detailed description.Tills is made of silver gray and pinksatin brocade, the jacket being cut onplain lines and open down tho front, whero it falls away to show a vest ofivory satin. There aro two folds downtlio front, and these ure held togetherwith silver cords and agraffes. The vestfastens witlt small silver button. Atthe neck thero is a small jabot of laceand at tho upper edge of tho collarthero is a ruflle falling over. The sleevesare large gigots, witlt insets of whitosatin at tlio tops. The scums iu the backflaro but little. Worn over a plain skirtof some dark stuff this would bo veryelegant and dressy.
Speaking of dressy garments, I mustnot omit to mention a new bieycle suitworn yesterday, There were neut black-ki-

Bucti 1. Life.Ifestcrday a lady in a Broadway cable

As tlio passed out tho men oppositesmiled, aud one said to his companion,"Crazy as ajoon." But how could theytoll? All she said was true. New YorkWorld.
Crdln.1 Dl Itende.Speculation ou his successor by the
popo himself is humorous aud interesting. Leo Ani smilingly told somo car.dluals recently that Cardinal Di Iloudo, archbishop of Bcnovcnto, would be thenext wearer of the tiara. On being asked why ho thought so, Joachim I'eccllooked round slyly at the cardinals andsaid: "Because he is the youngest. Themortality among aged members of thesacred college is so great. " Cardinal DlRcnde is one of the pope's favorites. He belongsto the Odescalchl family. Tho mentionof his name by Leo XIII makes him topical. New York Advertiser.
