Alternative Treatments in Chronic Pain Management: Treating Outside of Opioids

Course Summary

In light of the opioid crisis and current statewide action to address this crisis, such as the proposed executive order of Governor Wolf, it has become very important for practitioners and judges alike to understand what alternatives are available to opioids. Interventional pain medicine specialist, David Qu, M.D., will speak alongside a defense attorney and claimant attorney, concerning a wide variety of options available to treat chronic pain today.

PANELISTS:

David Qu, M.D., M.S. Dr. Qu obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees at Carnegie Mellon University, and attended State University of New York at Buffalo for medical school. He subsequently finished his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, and finished his fellowship in Pain Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the department of anesthesiology and critical care. After fellowship, Dr. Qu started the Pennsylvania Pain & Spine Institute, with offices in Bucks and Montgomery counties. He performs numerous procedures and minimally invasive surgical interventions for pain management and relief, and is a current key opinion leader for numerous medical research and device companies.

Maureen Cassidy, Esq. Maureen “Morty” Cassidy is a Senior Associate with Pond Lehocky Stern Giordano, concentrating her practice exclusively in the area of workers’ compensation since graduating from law school. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Penn State University followed by her law degree from Widener University. Ms. Cassidy was born and raised in Delaware County and hails from a union background. Her mother was a unionized teacher and her father was a member of International Association of Machinists prior to retirement. She began her legal career as an intern in the violence and sexual assault unit for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, where she interviewed and prepared witnesses and victims for trial. Her commitment to assisting women who are victims of abuse led her to become a former member of the development committee as a volunteer for Women Against Abuse. She also held a legal externship for the Honorable Ann A. Osborne in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. For the next five years, her practice focused on workers’ compensation at two large regional defense firms, where she gained extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of litigation with insurance companies and employers. She has been continuously active in the workers’ compensation arena, serving as the former Young Lawyers Division liaison for the Philadelphia Bar Associations’ Workers’ Compensation Section and was also a member of The Judge Alexander F. Barbieri Workers’ Compensation Inn of Court. She has brought hundreds of cases from trial to verdict. In 2015, Ms. Cassidy became a certified specialist in Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation by the PA Bar Association’s Section on Workers’ Compensation Law as authorized by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. She was recently appointed to a three year term as a Hearing Committee Member for the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Ms. Cassidy has published numerous articles in The Legal Intelligencer,

Philadelphia Law Weekly and Pennsylvania Self Insured Association newsletter. She is an active member in the community assisting with pro bono actions for Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (Philly VIP) and volunteers with the Children’s Scholarship Fund of Philadelphia. Ms. Cassidy’s passion for workers’ compensation stems from her family’s history and personal understanding of the importance of having an advocate in your corner during a difficult time. She understands what workers’ compensation benefits can mean to a family and looks forward to continuing her representation of injured workers and protecting their rights. Andrea C. Rock, Esq. Andrea is a member of the Workers' Compensation Department at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, P.C. and concentrates her practice in the defense of employers and self-insureds in all manner of workers' compensation matters. She represents employers in many industries, including retail services, banking, construction and manufacturing, in addition to assisted living facilities and religious organizations. Andrea currently serves a co-chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Section.

In 1999, Andrea earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from American University. Following her time in Washington, Andrea returned to the Philadelphia area and received her juris doctor from Widener University School of Law in 2002. Andrea is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the U.S. District of New Jersey.
