GEPON Gigabit PON technologies have emerged to support high-capacity,
Triple-Play PON systems.
GEPON: Standard Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) supports FSAN QoS and
SLA capabilities
ability to scale
QoS aware Ethernet switch fabrics
current bandwidth of 1.25 Gbps symmetrical (1 Gigsymmetrical fully usable)
the most cost effective method to aggregate 1-Gigabit portsfor transport
Supports multicast IPTV and features (like IGMP)
Customers are successfully using IPTV over GEPON today.

Why Gigabit Ethernet PON- IEEE PON?
A + B + C = Success
Simple and Reliable
Passive design- PON is chosen for P-MP broadcast of IP/RF
video as well as reduced cost for network deployment. Ethernet, most successful communications technology in the last
25 years. Variable packet size optimized for data/IP applications.
Scalable and Secure
Most scalable design (10MB, 100MB) 1000MB, 10 Gig
Today, single mode fiber can easily carry 40Gb/s over one
wavelength. IEEE PON supports CWDM wavelength applications
Cost Effective
Fiber optic cable is the only future proof communications medium
Eliminates field electronics and expensive controlledenvironmental vaults to house electronics.

Internationally GE PON-IEEE is being selected
Korea has selected GE PON for Nation wide deployment
China has selected GE PON for field trials in 2005
Japan has moved from 100Mbps Ethernet and BPON to GE PON
has the largest base of GE PON deployed British Telecom has dropped plans for BPON product deployment
with their move to IP network.
GE PON products have been steadily replacing product selectionprocess with local manufactures inside Asian countries with EPON
products- favored vendor status.
Chip based EPON products have 3 chip vendors (+ more) to drive
costs down for ONUs. All IP services. Influences world wide purchase toward GE PON

Voice, Data, Video and More more from a Single Platform
Build a transparent pipe that is capable of supporting all services Address: Enterprise, Residential, and National Security Concerns
Voice Services: True TDM Services, E1 Services, and VoIP
E1 service is the most prevalent service offering to businesses today
TDM Voice meets Class 5 switch Full Feature set- Carrier Class voice
TDM and VOIP voice meets- Meets Emergency Service, Governmentwire tapping and MAC ID traceable requirements.
High Speed Data Services
High Speed Internet Access to 100Mbps per port
High Speed Business Services VLAN Tagging, Encryption, VPNs, Transparent LAN services
64 Kbps bandwidth Minimum and Maximum Upstream/Downstream
Multi-carrier Video Services
RF and/or Satellite services supported on single fiber (CWDM overlay) HFC functions- RF video, DOCSIS Return Path, Cable Modem + VOIP
IP Video- IP Multicast and IGMP Snooping (HDTV IP Video service)

IPTV over GEPON GEPON archecture can allow for economies on IPTV
bandwith
GEPON archecture allows for scaleable bandwith per
user.
Supports Multicast Used for broadcast video. One video stream can be shared
between multiple video consumers. Each video channel is
provided using a specific multicast group address.
Supports Unicast
Used for On Demand services and supports a single stream for a
single user

IGMP Proxy and Snooping IGMP
This is the protocol used by set-top boxes to connect to a specific
channel in the Video server
Snooping
A passive method whereby the access network (ONTs and
ONUs) simply performs a relay function for the messages.
Proxy
An active method where the access network (OLTs and ONUs)
will process all requests from downstream (STBs, or ONUs) andpresent its own requests upstream.

IGMP Proxy and Snooping Advantages
Only channels requested for viewing use bandwith
Bandwith consolidated at IGMP proxy points (ONT and ONU)
It improves the performance of channel change times
It reduces the processing load on the upstream multi-layer switch The IGMP managed ethernet port (at the ONU) eliminates broadcast
storms within the home and improves channel change times
It is important to chose equipment that supports this

Top 10 IPTV Tips
1. Be careful about BPON; does not support IPTV
2. Be careful about GPON; unproven with IPTV
3. Use a proven IPTV vendor
4. Beware of the bandwidth requirements of multicast streams5. Select routing/switching technology that supports IPTV
6. Use multi-port ONUs. Residental Gateways are expensive & troublesome
7. Pick a good STB vendor with proven IPTV experience
8. Ensure you Conditional Access, Digital Rights Management, Middlewareand STB work together
9. Consider before developing your own middleware
10. Get people with proven IPTV experience to implement
