All I wanted to know about getting Assignments

Positives

• Keep my calendar up to date on Arbiter• Respond to emails when games are posted• Be flexible with locations• Look for new assignments frequently (Daily)• Accept AR positions as easily as Centers• Give plenty of notice (more then 48hrs) if game

MUST be turned back• Keep turnbacks down to a minimum (or preferably NONE)

Negatives

• Turnbacks• Declining a game and the calendar shows that

your open• Turnbacks• Letting an assignment sit for more then 24hrs• Specifying locations on email replies• Turnbacks

Rankings

• Each league utilises individual rankings for Referee• Separate rankings for Center and AR• Rankings reviewed once a year in Spring• Contributors to rankings– Working Tournaments– Coaches’ report– Development & Growth (D&G)– Formal Assessment– Project 50 Program

Other Factors

• Family or Special Handling Requests• Travel Limits• Availability days during the week• Referee location• Referee’s age

Assigning sequence

1. Assign outlaying areas (like Wendt, Holland, Newfane, Fort Niagara, etc)

2. Auto assign remainder of schedule and referees3. Process Family and Special Handling requests4. Review mileage and reduce to below 20 miles5. Release schedules and allow limited turnbacks6. Re-assign Turnbacks– Emails (general and targeted) – Announcements on Arbiter– Phone calls

Assigning considerations

• Teams playing• Frequency of referees at location (more practical at

outlaying areas)• Frequency of ‘seeing’ same teams• Multiple games at same location on same day• Travel distance waived, but not taking advantage of waiver• Using high ranked referee for lower ranked assignment• Number of current assignments, compared to alternate

referee considerations… try to schedule referee with fewer games
