Activity Plan: Good Vibrations (i.e., Recognizing Vibrations Are Transferred by Sound Waves) Created for: Donnie Grade Level: Middle School Academic Content: Science Alignment to Academic Standards

State Standard for General Education: Science (Physical Science/Forces and Motion)

Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) Essential Elements (EE)

MS-PS4-2 Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials

EE.MS-PS4-2 Initial Level:

Use a model to recognize that sound waves are transmitted by vibrations.

IEP Goals

• Donnie will develop concepts for turn taking through movement • Donnie will develop awareness of stop and go through movement activities • Donnie will increase expressive communication through co-active signing

Materials:

• Drums (or any other type of percussion instrument/object that produces vibrations)

Preparation: • Select a drum for student

Activity Step:

• Provide anchor statement for activity. Say, “Let’s feel the drum.” • Introduce the drum to the student by using hand-under-hand guidance to feel the

surface of the drum as you tap the drum to make vibrations. • Give the student time to explore the drum. • When student taps the drum, teacher coactively signs, “Feel”. • When student stops tapping the drum, the teacher also stops tapping the drum. • When student begins tapping the drum again, teacher coactively signs, “Feel”. • Repeat steps above.

Implementation Tips:

• When the student develops an understanding for ”turn taking” build on other activities by using the same “turn taking” strategies.

Taking it to the Next Level:

• Incorporate imitation strategies into daily routine (e.g., dressing). • Expand Co-active movements into sequential movement activities (e.g., steps for

dressing, brushing teeth). Activities should have a clear beginning and end.

strategies. https://nationaldb.org/library/page/1969
