Ali first learned to box atthe Columbia Gym,located in the basementof ColumbiaAuditorium, which isnow the Spalding

University Center. He wasinvited by Joe Martin, a

police officer who alsoworked as a boxing coach. Ali

met Martin when the young teen reported his red bicyclestolen. He never recovered the bike, but his fate wassealed with that encounter. The gym, where Ali first prac-ticed his cutting jabs and fast footwork, is still used bySpalding athletes today. Address: 824 S. Fourth Street

Muhammad Ali Childhood Home: Ali lived in the WestLouisville house during his childhood in the 1940sthrough the early 1960s. The home was recently reno-vated (and returned to its original pink state) andreopened for public tours as amuseum in spring 2016.
