nbc/MISS NAMIBIA CROWNING & BROADCAST SUCCESS

JAPANESE TV PROGRAMMES HANDOVER TO nbc

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Shun-shuke Takei paid a courtesy visit to the Namibian Broadcasting Corpo-ration (nbc) on 30 June 2017.

Vice-Minister Takei handed over 21 Japanese television pro-grams to nbc Director General, Stanley B. Similo. This was the first time the Government of Ja-pan in cooperation with the Japan Foundation provided Japanese TV programs to Namibia, since the establishment of its Embassy in Windhoek in 2015. The cost of the

broadcasting rights of 21 TV pro-grammes worth over N$2 million (app. JPY17 million) is borne by the Japan Foundation.

Receiving the programmes on behalf of the nbc, Similo noted: “We want to engage our inter-national partners to ensure that the nbc’s channels are populated with content that is in line with the broadcaster’s mandate to in-form, educate and entertain. The accommodation of Japanese pro-gramming will allow the nbc to fulfil this mandate and bring the

world closer to the Namibian peo-ple.”

The nbc’s Head of Content Hub, Maria Indongo-Nepaya had been tasked with selecting the content from the list offered by the Japan Foundation to be broadcast-ed to the Namibian nation at large and said: “It is the nbc’s distinct pleasure to introduce the Namib-ian people to Japanese content, thereby enabling them to embark on a journey of understanding re-garding Japanese arts and culture, as well as science, economics and much more.”

The 21 selected content genres vary from drama to documentary, spanning a broad range of topics including arts & culture, technol-ogy & economy, industry as well as nature & science. The selection also includes animation programs for the younger demographics. With this partnership, the nbc and the Government of Japan in coop-eration with the Japan Foundation aim to provide to Namibian audi-ences of all age groups enjoyable international content enabling the citizenry to get to know Japan and its people.

The Japan Foundation is an institution supervised by the Min-istry of Foreign Affairs which pro-motes international cultural ex-change and mutual understanding programs throughout the world in order to cultivate friendship and ties between Japan and the world.

On his part, Takei stated: “Since the establishment of the resident Embassy of Japan, the Government of Japan hoped that Namibian people would get to know more about the diverse as-pects of Japanese culture and so-ciety. I am pleased today that I of-ficially handed over various genres of Japanese TV programmes to the national broadcaster of Namibia in cooperation with the Japan Foun-dation.” Takei further expressed the hope that Namibian people across all generations would enjoy the content and become more fa-miliar with Japan and its people.

Takei, who is in charge of Afri-can Affairs in the Ministry of For-eign Affairs is on an official visit to Namibia to discuss the way for-ward to further strengthening the relations between the two coun-tries.

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) pulled off a successful broadcast of the recent Miss Namibia 2017 beauty pageant which took place in the capital last week.

The pageant was broadcast live on nbc National Radio, Otjiherero Service, Setswa-na Service as well as the Damara/Nama Ra-dio Service. Television and a live Facebook streaming allowed viewers across the world to watch as Namibia crowned its next repre-sentative for the 2017/18 period.

The broadcaster introduced - for the very first time - a booth where the 1995 Miss Universe winner, Michelle McLean-Bailey interviewed previous Miss Namibia winners including Barbara Kahatjipara (1993), Emsie Esterhuizen (1989), Laina Bachler (1981, 1st princess) and Odile Gertze (2010).

Twenty-three (23) year old Suné January who hails from Rehoboth, was crowned Miss Namibia 2017. She aims to get involved in an-ti-poaching activities during her reign.
