Transcript of Airport Solar Project St. Thomas

A sea of panelsThe Cyril E. King Airport Installation is the largest in the Virgin Islands.

Lotta powerThe 450 Kw system will generate enough power to take 15 percent off the airport’s utility bill, saving about $35,000 a month

Pretty longThe system is 1,600 feet long and 21 feet wide. Each array is 10 feet and six inches wide.

Preparing the ground

Erosion control methods were implemented

Ready to go into the ground

Help was needed in the rocky spots

Supports were driven deeply into the groundSystem is rated to withstand 150 mile per hour wind

First nightTo interfere as little as possible with air traffic some work was done at night.

FramingThe framing was together but had to be spread out

Flex racks

Unfolding the frames

The frames before the panels were placed on top

Underneath the frames, combiner box

Constructing transformers and inverter pad

Not a small jobSome heavy equipment was called in

Titled toward the sun

Transformer installed

Installing fuses in combiner boxes

Closing up after the fuses are in

Commissioning inverters

Completing the wiring for the transformer

Long as a runway itselfThose are solar street lights on the left. Solar is definitely making an impact in the Virgin Islands
