Paper Airplane Project and Design Thinking Process

Distance Airplane Time Airplane

UnderstandRequirements One airplane should be constructed for longest distance

One airplane should be constructed for longest air time

Materials- All materials will be multiplied by a factor of six for large scale model One standard sized sheet of copy paper (required)

One standard paper clip (optional)

Three inches of tape (optional)

A dab of glue (optional)

Three staples (optional)

To make our plane fly as far as possible we need very little drag and lots thrust and lift. For time, we need large surface area on the wings to provide resistance to gravity.

ExploreWhat had to happen

Little drag as possible to limit wind resistance

Weight limited to resist gravity

Lots of thrust on the throw to get it up in the air and stay up

Lift on the wing has to occur so it will stay in the air

DefineConsiderations

Large wings for time so plane will stay in the air and resist gravity

Small and compact design so it will cut through the air resistance

Heavy nose with paper clips and staples so we can throw it farther

Bend back of wings down

Tape wings together so it will keep it compact

Bend back of wings up

Weight in back or front

Ideate

These are three of our prototypes, their designs and how we made them, and the

results of their practice flights

Prototype

Distance Prototype: not very good results

Time prototype: most effective for time

Distance Prototype: best results for distance

Refine

One refinement we made for the distance plane was deciding to turn the end of the wings down instead of up

Solution

Distance Prototype and Final Time Prototype and Final

Final Test Our distance airplane came in first place in our class with

a distance of 86 feet and 11 inches

Our time airplane came in third place in our class with a time of 3.2 seconds

Video of flights

Trial Number Distance Time

1 72 feet 8 inches 2.7 seconds

2 75 feet 3 inches 3.2 seconds

3 86 feet 11 inches 3.2 seconds
