AIM: HOW CAN BLOOD BE USED IN FORENSICS?

March 17, 2014 Do Now: What is blood? What does blood do in

our body?

AGENDA• Blood as Evidence

• What is blood?

• Function of the Circulatory System

• Function of Blood

• Blood Components

• CSI introduction

• Exit Slip

UNIT 3: BLOOD

Goals: Be able to test blood using blood typing and blood spatter analysis to solve criminal cases.

Labs: Blood Typing, Blood Spatter, CSI Investigation

WHAT IS BLOOD?• Connective tissue that transports oxygen and

nutrients to cells, and removes waste from cells

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

•Organ system responsible for delivering nutrients, hormones, and gases to and from cells.

• Maintains homeostasis

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM• Major Organs:

• Heart

• Lungs

• Blood Vessels

• Arteries

• Veins

ARTERIES• Take blood away from heart

VEINS• Take blood to the heart

HEART• Muscle that pumps blood by rhythmic contractions

LUNGS

• Give blood oxygen

BLOOD AS EVIDENCE

1. DNA from White Blood Cells (WBC’s)

2. Blood Typing

3. Blood Splatter Analysis

WHAT IS BLOOD MADE OF?

BLOOD COMPONENTS• Blood is made up of:

• Plasma

• Erythrocytes (RBC)

• Leukocytes (WBC)

• Platelets

ERYTHROCYTES• Red Blood Cells

• Carry oxygen to cells, take CO2 from cells

• Lack nuclei and most organelles

LEUKOCYTES

• White Blood Cells

• Prevent infection, remove cellular waste, cause allergic reactions

PLATELETS

• Cell fragments

• Help repair damage to the circulatory system

PLASMA• Transports cells and all other items in blood, such as nutrients, proteins, hormones, waste, and clotting factors

• Mostly water

CSI CASE: IN COLD BLOOD• Date: March 17, 2014

• Time: 5:00 A.M.

• Location: East River Park

• Victim: Patrick O’ Bama

• Evidence: Blood stains and samples

• Cause of Death: Unknown

EXIT SLIP

1. What are the 3 ways that blood is used in forensic science?

2. What is the major function of the circulatory system?

3. What are the 4 major organs of the circulatory system?

4. What are the 4 components of blood?
