Non-Deterministic Approaches (NDA)

What are Non-Deterministic Approaches? Non-Deterministic Approaches are methods,

philosophies and approaches that seek to address the effect of inherent and systematic uncertainties in engineered systems. NDAs are rapidly gaining ground as preferred methods for analysis and design with potentially high payoffs (cost, safety, etc.) in aeronautical, aerospace, and other many other related applications.

NDA is a working group within STRTC

29 August 2003

Non-Deterministic Approaches (NDA)

NDA cannot remain a Forum forever…so we have a decision to make…

29 August 2003

Non-Deterministic Approaches (NDA)

NDA has conducted the NDA Forum at SDM for 5 years (6 counting SDM ’04) But a forum is supposed to have a finite

life…fall back to the TC or move up to a full conference

As the “sponsor” of NDA, STRTC should move to create the largest and most active Program Committee and NDA-related conference in the U.S.A.

29 August 2003

Non-Deterministic Approaches (NDA)

Natural evolution of NDA activities in AIAA NDA is tied to, but significantly different,

from all other AIAA TC’s and Conferences Strong competition from outside AIAA

SAE G-11, ASCE Probabilistic Methods, ASME Committee on Uncertainty and Probabilistics

Exponential growth in papers, symposia and conferences in the past 10 years

29 August 2003

Non-Deterministic Approaches (NDA)

Process AIAA NDA Conference at SDM

Develop proposal and present to SDM Long Range Planning Committee in April 2004

AIAA NDA Program Committee Begin process of acquiring endorsements

from all other AIAA TC’s

STRTC’s endorsement is critical!

29 August 2003

Future STRTC Challenges In 5 years:

What will the field of aeronautics and astronautics look like in 5 or 10 years?

What will the performance requirements be for materials, structures and engineered systems?

How will engineers work, interact, and share information?

What should the STRTC look like to meet these needs?

29 August 2003

And finally…
