Applications: 20 MW temporary power to major zinc mine
• Situation the customer faced– Wind farm next to zinc mine required connection to
the National grid
– Also new transformers needed replacing at mine
– Without 19 MW of power the mine would flood and
extraction of €1.5 million/ day of zinc and lead would stop
• Task that had to be done– Detailed planning of site requirements
– Co-ordination of work with local utility company and mine
• Action we took to sort the problem out– Aggreko provided 25 x 1250 kVA generators, 5 x 6.3 MVA transformers, a 6 MW loadbank,
electrical distribution equipment and 375,000 litres of fuel
– Equipment was transported in and commissioned to provide power for 5 continuous days
• Result for the customer– The mine shutdown, restarted and ran as normal on 20 MW of temporary Aggreko power,
with no loss of production
Applications: Utility support
• Situation the customer faced– The transformer failed at a sewage treatment works
– The existing back up generators failed
– Without power to the site it started to flood
• Task that had to be done– Get temporary power to the site as quickly as possible
to avoid a potential disaster
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We provided 4 x 125 kVA, 1 x 320 kVA, 1 x 1250kVA, 2.1 MVA transformer and fuel
tanks
– We set up the equipment dispersed around the site to provide power directly to critical
areas such as the control room and pumps
• Result for the customer– The sewage works were operational before the flood reached the nearby river
Applications: Utility support• Situation the customer faced
– The customer was a Scottish power company
– A 50 year old submarine cable supplying power from mainland
Scotland to Bressay Island had to be moved as the sea bed was
being dredged where the cable was laid.
– The 400 residents and the local fish-meal factory needed a
power supply while the cable was disconnected
• Task that had to be done– Get temporary power to homes on the island and to support the factory which consumes up to
70% of the island’s power
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We supplied transport, ferries and cranes to set up the equipment and cabling to supply the
entire island
– We provided 11 kV high voltage to the island, taking into account the fluctuating load demand of
the factory. Fuel Management was included for 10,000 litres per day
• Result for the customer– The island continued functioning as usual and the new submarine cable was installed without a
problem
• Situation the customer faced– The customer was a steel processor in Sheffield, UK
– The floods of 2007 destroyed the cooling tower causing
other parts of the plant to explode
• Task that had to be done– A temporary cooling tower was required to get production up
and running
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We supplied and installed a 900 kW rental cooling system made up of a 600 kW chiller
and a 300 kW chiller and provided a 800 kVA generator to power the equipment
• Result for the customer– Downtime was kept to a minimum, reducing loss of profit and revenue
– The plant’s customers were kept happy and no business was lost
Applications: Industrial
• Situation the customer faced– The customer was a chemical plant on Teeside, UK
– Shut-down was required by law for preventative maintenance
and servicing work
• Task that had to be done– Power was needed to supply the temporary village set up for the
maintenance workers
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We supplied 2x350 kVA generators to power the 72 cabins
• Result for the customer– The shut-down was a success and maintenance was finished within the time frame so
that production could continue and profits were unaffected
Applications: Industrial
• Situation the customer faced
– The customer was a oil company looking to increase its commercial oil
supplies. It was building an accommodation platform in the UK, which was
then going to be shipped to Qatar to be bolted onto an existing platform
• Task that had to be done– Provide a reliable source of power during the build and then modify
equipment for it to be taken on the platform while it was being moved
• Action we took to sort the problem out
– We supplied a 500 kVA generator and a loadbank, which sat on the dock to provide power to all
the new equipment as it was being thoroughly tested
– We supplied a 800 kVA generator and 2 x 14000 ltr fuel tanks, which were located on top of the
1,700 tonne platform as it sailed by barge to Qatar
– The fuel tanks had to be bottom fed
– We placed a heat detector within the generator on the platform
• Result for the customer
– The project ran smoothly and was successfully handed over to the Aggreko international team in
Qatar for the commissioning stages
Applications: Petrochemical, oil & gas
• Situation the customer faced
– The customer was an offshore oil company based in the North Sea.
– An engine fire on one of their rigs stopped production completely
• Task that had to be done– Provide a reliable supply of power to the rig so that operations could
continue
• Action we took to sort the problem out
– We supplied 2x 1250 kVA generators
– To save valuable deck space, we changed the alternators to specialist 600/690V, which
removed the need for a separate TX transformer
• Result for the customer
– Production on the oil rig could commence with minimum disruption
– Success has lead to further projects with the company
Applications: Petrochemical, oil & gas
• Situation the customer faced– The customer was the world’s premier aerospace event –
Farnborough air show
– More than 1,200 global companies exhibit at the show
– It is broadcast across the world
• Task that had to be done– Provide a reliable source of power for the show including the broadcasting facilities,
concessions and big screens
– Ensure the equipment was installed without intruding on the show
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We provided 15 MVA of power and 120,000 litres of fuel management
– We set up watchkeep staff around the clock
• Result for the customer– The event ran smoothly with no loss of power at any point during the week long event
Applications: Films and events
• Situation the customer faced– The customer was an events organiser in Dublin, Ireland
– They were setting up a temporary ice rink for the Christmas
period and needed power and chillers
• Task that had to be done– To preserve the quality of the ice, a chiller operating at -12 degrees centigrade 24/7
was required
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We provided a 750 kW chiller which was powered by a 200 kVA twinpack
– We also provided 2 x 400 kVA generators to power the themed market, café, viewing
area and reception area at the rink
• Result for the customer– The event ran smoothly throughout November, December and January with no
problems at all
Applications: Films and events
Applications: Telecommunications
• Situation the customer faced– Network Rail is implementing a new rail communications system
to improve performance and safety
• Task that had to be done– Network Rail is constructing more than 2,000 masts
– Each location needed power but in some situations the DNO couldn’t provide power,
there were areas which had wayleave issues or there was no existing track side source
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We supplied silenced canopied generators between 15 kVA and 45 kVA to recharge
the signal masts’ UPS and provide backup
• Result for the customer– Our national presence has meant Network Rail needs to only liaise with one supplier
for its temporary power needs, helping to make the project run smoothly
Applications: Military
• Situation the customer faced– Twice a year, the Royal Navy takes its vessels on sea trials to
prove they’re fit for purpose, which is necessary to achieve Lloyds
insurance accreditation
– The trial process involves simulating loss of power to the carrying ship
• Task that had to be done– a rescue operation is implemented with the generator kicking in to provide emergency
back-up power, allowing all equipment to continue to function
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We provided a 500 kVA generator, distribution board and cables to ensure the Navy had
a reliable source of power while out at sea on the trials
• Result for the customer– By providing quality and reliable back-up equipment, the Royal Navy now has full
confidence that in the event of power failure, the rescue mission can be completed
Applications: Shipping
• Situation the customer faced– A cargo ship was departing Belfast en route for South Africa
when inspections discovered that both the on board generator and
the back up generator were faulty
– If the problem was not solved the ship would have had a delayed
start resulting in fines and would have had to stop in France for repair
work delaying them further
• Task that had to be done– A temporary generator was required to supply power to the ship and due to maritime law a
back up generator was required also
• Action we took to sort the problem out– We supplied 800 kVA containerised unit and 100 metres of cable to supply the control room
with power
• Result for the customer– By working throughout the night Aggreko ensured that the ship departed on time and no
fines were received
