England vs. France: The 100
Years War
Common Law = Unified System of Law
Magna Carta = Guaranteed basic political rights for all citizens
Parliament = Legislative group which gave voice to more people in society
King Philip II of France = Wanted more French and less English power.
Estates General = Similar to Parliament but increases rather than decreases royal power.
Great Schism = Competing popes, one supported by France and one by England
Bubonic Plague = 1/3 of Population Dead, spread through trade.
Longbow = The end of knight dominance, instead more common men make up armies.
100 Years War = Increase Nationalism, French Noble power increased, and England experienced
hard times.
100 Years War Reflection
• Why in your opinion did England and France continuously fight one another for such a long time? What are the long term impacts of such fighting?
• If you were French during the wars, would you be inspired by Joan of Arc? Do you believe she was truly inspired by God? Why or why not?
