Proficiency based language requirement

University of Kentucky

USP language requirement(1985-2010)

“meet Kentucky's pre-college curriculum requirement” (see http://www.uky.edu/Admission/apply.htm)

which means, according to the Kentucky Department of Education website:

“2 credits required or demonstrated competency” (see http://education.ky.gov/KDE/Instructional+Resources/High+School/ Additional+Information/The+PreCollege+Curriculum.htm)

that is, 2 years of high school study (or equivalent demonstrated competency), or 2 semesters at UK

UK Core – Revised Gen Ed curriculum

• A revised general education curriculum will be designed to smooth students' transition from high school to a research university, and to establish the foundations for advanced college-level learning.

• The general education curriculum will lay the foundation for effective citizenship in our pluralistic society that is increasingly interconnected with a multilingual, global community.

UK Core Entrance Requirement

“competency equivalent of two years of high school foreign language”

All entering students, including transfer students, must demonstrate a novice-mid proficiency level in a foreign language through an outside assessment rather than through high school seat-time.

Ways to satisfy entrance requirement

• STAMP score of 2 or higher (“novice mid”)

• AP exam (score of 2 or higher)

• SAT Subject Test (score of 2 or higher)

• Students who begin study of a new language at UK do not need to demonstrate entrance proficiency.

Ways to satisfy entrance requirement

• For languages for which the STAMP is not available (for example, Latin), UK will administer its own assessment exam.

• For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL exam score of 71 or higher will constitute proof of proficiency.
